Bosch induction ranges and element placement

I am trying to buy a slide in induction range for a scheduled renovation but my preferred is out of stock (GE Cafe single oven). I am looking at Bosch and I wonder what people think of the placement of the 11” diameter stovetop element on the 800 series slide in range or the Benchmark slide in range? It seems too far back for ease of use with a heavy pan or pot (like my 12 inch cast iron skillet!) I am older and developing a shoulder issue. Any suggestions for other good induction ranges not beyond $4,000? Thanks!

I just bought a Bosch Benchmark induction cooktop and was concerned about the same thing but I don't find it to be a problem. Also with the Benchmark you can create a larger hob on the left side by combining zones and I have found that to be a great feature for something like an oval dutch oven. If you think about it, if you can manage to get a heavy pan to the front of the cooktop, a couple more inches isn't going to make a difference. My concern was more about having the hob back under the exhaust fan but it's in a house with a proper range hood that's higher than the OTR microwave that I'm used to. Overall I really like it though it's taken me a while to get used to the lack of individual controls for each hob. I decided Bosch was the best option, in part based on reviews, and that I'd just have to get used to the things I was concerned about which I have.

I recently bought the Bosch 800 Series and the elements placement can be improved. I wish the 9" burner was at the front instead of the two 6" - it is my most used element and it sits way too far to reach comfortably. You do get used to it eventually and might need to wipe your backsplash more often (learned the hard way after a nasty oil splatter that my grout had absorbed by the time I saw it). That seemed a better deal than the Benchmark series and I was worried the flexible element will be finicky to use, which was a wild guess of mine. I wish I got the Benchmark. My old Bosch gas range was from the Benchmark series which I installed 6 months ago but replaced with induction and you can definitely feel the downgrade with the oven - the door doesn't close as smoothly, no telescopic rack, etc. If you're trying to pick between the 800 and Benchmark, go with the Benchmark. Try rebooting it by turning power on and off at the main circuit. I have not gotten that error message but on very rare occasions the cooktop seems to freeze. If it was a computer you would press cont/alt/del but since it does not have that button we turn power on/off. this happens once every several months so we have not called repair guy out for this. I think that it is the downfall of all electronic equipment - all of them have mini-computers inside....

Unfortunately it does not have a bridge burner. It does get challenged with a 13-in pan at the edge. The problem is less obvious when I use a cast iron pan because of its powerful conduction and heat retention. When I use a thinner non-stick or steel pan I can clearly see that the edges are not heating up. I don't use large pans very often as we are a small family. This is a limitation that I can live with. The Bosch looks great in my kitchen and it performs very well in general. So far I'm very happy.

Here is a video. I just realized the sound reminds of being on an airplane. It doesn’t always run, and when it does, it’s not always for the entire time the oven is on. It must be triggered on to release steam. It usually shuts off less than 5min after the oven is turned off. I just shut the oven off and the fan shut down two minutes later. Not sure how loud it will sound in a phone. When I replay the video it sounds louder than the reality of it. We do have an echo in our kitchen. Our table is in the same space and the fan does not interrupt conversation, for example - which was my biggest concern when purchasing. We are a noisy family and often have music playing, etc… so like I said, it’s very personal. Hope my experience helps you! I really don’t like annoying noises - and for some reason this fan doesn’t bother me. My parents’ kitchen aid fan, on the other hand, makes my skin crawl 😂. For me it’s not about the volume, but about the particular sound the fan makes. Second video is me shutting it off and you’ll hear the fan also shuts off. Good luck!

"Anyway, there are plenty of apparently acceptable ranges that only require 40A. (My GC was supposed to put in 50. I'm hoping there's a 40 back there to match the circuit box. Grrr.)" You need to check the wire gauge. If it's #6, then you can swap the 40 amp breakers for 50 amp breakers. If the wire gauge is #8, then you would have to upgrade the wiring for 50 amp breakers and range. "Need to figure out a way to pull the old stove out a couple inches and have a peek." That won't tell you anything. You need to check the wires.

Sweet Potato. Thank you. I took a cast iron 12" skillet to the showroom and decided the placement of the large burner just wouldn't work for me. So I bought the GE Profile. I liked the Cafe better but hard to get ahold of right now in my area.

You gave me something important to look into for my kitchen update. My current range has rear controls and most grease splatters are caught on the porcelain and not so much on the tile backsplash behind it. I need to see what I might use for a backsplash that isn't grouted tile!

I have the LG LSE4617ST, the predecessor to the LG LSIS6338F whose performance is top-notch in CR's testing. Its largest induction element is at the front and it is less than $4K. In its tests, the performance of the Bosch HIS8055U was significantly worse.
