Stuck moving forward with kitchen upgrades- need opinions!
My kitchen looks dark but the true color countertops are in the first picture. We'd like to paint the cabinets and get new pendants both above counters and above kitchen table. The first picture is an idea of what I thought would look nice but I don't know if the cabinet color (SW Studio Clay) would be too close to the LR color (Behr Muted Sage). I also cannot decide what pendants to go with above the counters that would match the oversized dome above the table. Any feedback as far as cabinet color, lighting and flooring would be very much appreciated!! Thank you again.

Comments (5)If you're set on canning the marble idea for your counters, you may want to look at honed absolute granite. It's black and when honed has a matt finish and looks quite beautiful with the white. I personally would reconsider the marble choice. With the proper sealant it should hold up well. At the very least, call a couple of fabricators and get a professional opinion. In regards to fixtures, we installed Moen and love them. However I would never purchase them at the big box stores. From what I have been told, they are often made with inferior inner parts so they can be sold at lower prices. Don't skimp on your inside plumbing parts. To repair a break would be costly. We bought ours from Faucet Depot, got a great deal on them (I think) and their customer service was very helpful. Overall, I was very pleased with the experience. We have a Kraftmaid Cabinet in our spare bathroom at present, it was installed by a previous owner and has held up quite well although I'm not thrilled with the stain. I've heard a lot of people have been dissatisfied with the Kraftmaid product or service. They apparently used to be very good but may have deteriorated in recent years. A great resource for feedback on cabinets would be the kitchen forum. I'd cross post that part of your question there and see what others can offer. In regards to the basketweave on the floor. If you're going to venture and put marble on the floor, you shouldn't have a problem with the counters. Check out The tile shop, they have basket weave, and really any local tile store will have it, as well as other historical designs to choose from. Again, unless it's a name brand, I might have concerns about the quality of the tile coming from Home Depot. Although several people have used their subway tile and said it worked out very well for them...so it's probably a hit and miss. Hope this helps a little. Comments (45)Nalcar, you're so kind to do all this. And wow, that's really dramatic! The moldings are not so much to my taste, but the split up cabs with the top across is an interesting thought. On the right, though, the wall begins to curve just after the A/C and so I think it would take a lot of work to put a flat cabinet there. I can already hear what my contractor is going to say about that one. I have a really strange apartment with very odd lines so I've been hearing a lot of that! Also, that puts the Shaker door cab very close to the built-ins which have a door in a different style. You can see them in my pic in the post on 10/31 at 8:12. What do you think? I'd also have to consider the cost of the extra granite at this point. Oh, and the usual distraction from the wall A/C is a chair in front of it and a framed picture on top. He has destroyed his life and hurt my son, me and everyone else who care. Now he only surronds himself with people who use him and put up with his distructive behavior. Comments (83)If what you like is a one-wall kitchen with an island, that is possible. You'd have a super long island that is 3' deep and way roomier walkways (4') around the island. If you did that, I'd just make the nook a straight windowseat. Like this: The island has legs on one end for seating like this: The bay window provides extra space needed to walk comfortably behind the island seating. I'd add another doorway into the dining room, since that is now your primary eating area. You want non-cooking traffic to be able to get back and forth without entering your kitchen work zones. And I think you'll generally like the greater visibility and circular flow between rooms. If you orient the island drawer stack closest to the dining room so it opens toward the dining room, you'll be able to unload the dishwasher directly into that. And glasses can go in the pantry, which is just a step or two further. The pantry is floor-to-ceiling cabinets and around 12" deep. That's great pantry storage - stores a ton, and it's easy to see everything with nothing lost in the back. Note that the downsides are: - You lost a hallway closet and deepened the other hallway closet in order to elongate the one-wall part of the kitchen. You wouldn't have to do this if you lose the wall ovens, but I assume you don't want that. - It's going to be complicated to vent the range hood. - You'll need to get a fridge with one door and drawer freezer so they don't bang the open dishwasher. Or make peace with not opening the fridge and dishwasher at the same time....See More

Thank you Lyn, that's my other dilemma. Our walls are very close if not Natural Linen. As you can see, the counter wraps around and we don't know if this should be the same color as the walls or a different color.

last monthOlychick - here are a few more pictures to give you a general idea of the flow. The piece of artwork on the walls is not staying. Not sure what to do there either. I don't know what color backsplash either. Counters have to stay due to cost.
Any feedback is MUCH APPRECIATED as I have been stuck for months now.

I would reinforce a good lighting plan...but if you want to chew on some surface changes I would look at rattan for the drop pendants and fixture..I would get an area rug under the table I would paint the wall area around the windows I would get a new backsplash I would get runners//mats in the work area that coordinate w dinette area rug. dont forget hardware..that can really change the feel of the cabs.
I like these wall colors..really saturated... [ but maybe go lighter] it would be interesting w the green in the next room over. any neutral whether creams/whites/taupes in other things you do will work w this color......find a color for that window wall...
