Charle7, the mirrors do make it look like a dark hole over your FP. I don't agree that you need to remove the mirror already attached to your wall, but I do think the framed mirrors should come down and that you need to add a lot of light colored accessories to that side of the room. I'd put your best and biggest piece in the middle (you could also stick something interesting inside to make it taller and more colorful), and the rest of your ideas sound great. Maybe a white framed mirror could work if you put something large in front of it - you need to get rid of that tunnel look and dark reflection. You'll also need to bring down some of the lighter colors to the hearth, and possibly bring some of the darker colors over the the TV area (mixed with light). How about some blues accents to go with your furniture? More blue in the hearth rug and around the room would look great I think. Would go nicely with your framed needlework, too. Could you try moving some of your stuff around and snapping another pic for us to look at? I think you have a lot you can already work with.

The mirror is wonderful! I vote for natural beeswax colored candles, but although I think they are very attractive, I think they compete with your sconces, and look a little lost up there. Your planter is very pretty, but it's shallow, and doesn't seem to have drainage, which means you'll need a good layer of small gravel, which won't leave very much room for soil. So if I were you, I would use the candles and the planter somewhere else, and find a long, low, rectangular planter that can sit centered under the mirror, and hold enough soil to support a trailing plant that can go in both directions. And I wouldn't put anything else on the mantle at all. Simplicity and symmetry are good things for a mantel, partiularly when your mirror is so much the star. After seeing the room, I have to say I like the first picture of the Seine better. I can't tell what colors are in the rug, but what about using a fabric wall hanging rather than a picture or a mirror? To tell the truth, my eyes glazed over from staring at this one when I saw it on ebay; at first glance, it might seem too primitive for your refined room, but properly hung, I think the contrast would be smashing. Love Beverly’s second one ... that kind of antiqued glass is beautiful. And those sizes she’s showing really make a statement. Mirrors don’t just have to reflect something gorgeous on the other side of the room ... they’re art in their own right and are wonderful at reflecting light, adding dimension, and making a room feel bigger.
