Gadzooks!!! What has that man been smoking? You are 100% right in every little feeling you have. This does not work. It's hard to come up with alternatives without a scale drawing. Is that a bar as in belly up from the den side and be served by a bartender? Is that something that'll really function for you? Do you do a lot of cocktails entertaining in the family room? Because you sound dubious. Is it your dear desire to have your own private "pub", or is this mostly the architect's idea? Do you really want the laundry in the master, or is this also his notion? Some people like it close to the clothes. Others want it in the working part of the house. In moving it are you giving up function? For instance, would you have to have a stack pair (and if so, do you like using them?). Will you have a good place for sorting and folding? If all of that is cool with you about moving the laundry, have you considered moving the kitchen to where the laundry is, since your goal is to be open to the den and that area lines up better with it? Where does the door at the left lead? Backyard? That would be good for barbecue, but not so good if it's the only way out there though it doesn't appear to be the case (doable but not great). If that's okay you could even extend the kitchen proper into the current passage space. You'd give up some symmetry, but that's not bad. You'll add usable space and mystery. And the whole point of a den is a casual space that you enjoy having open to the kitchen, while having a more formal and private living room. Having the opening more toward the DR rather than centered gives you that without losing the flow. That should also limit the sight line from the entry. You could then put a bar, if desired, in the front corner and have it accessible to the formal ares as well as the den. If you love the whole bar thing and it's really just the fridge you're concerned about, just put it back in the kitchen and get an under counter bar fridge and/or wine fridge for the bar side. Tiny in a kitchen is workable, i.e., fridge, stove and sink all crammed together. Going from a normal, functional kitchen to the fridge in another room on purpose and paying good money to an architect for the displeasure is not. That's the kind of inconvenience that people remodel to get rid of!! Remember that he's working for you on your own house. Your (residents') opinions are the only ones that count. Just keep repeating, "The fridge goes in the kitchen" over and over until he gets the message.

I'll try to take pictures of mine, but there isn't much to see as the floors aren't in. The important thing at this point is the layout, and I think I've realized that the desk placement you have is exactly right. I'd love to see more of that. I'm thinking of a desk in that position with a right hand return which would section off the room a bit. I only have 28" on the right side of the window, and 24" on the other side - it looks like your space is bigger? But desks are only 29" or so deep, so I think that would be okay (?). I could put the second desk where your love seat is under the picture, and a bookshelf (or other storage) where your chair is. Holly, thanks for that site. I realized I just needed to use some grid paper and cut out some shapes so I didn't get very far on bhg, but may work with it more later. Finding the right furniture is going to be difficult, I really want lots of closed storage. I probably need built in cabinets more than I need a desk hutch. Does anyone use the kind of desk often built into kitchens (matching with kitchen cabinets, surface, and drawers) in an office? I guess Lowe's or Home Depot would do those? Would that be weird?

Nice room. If your hubby likes the look of that red print chair and/or finds it comfortable to sit in, keep it. If you do swap it out, the beige wing back suggested (pic) would be a really good choice ... as long as the seat padding is firm enough for it to be comfortable -- do sit in it before buying it. You might also find him an ottoman with wheels, or one to which you can add wheels. Repainted the metal w/new coat of black paint. Added a 1"x18" unfinished round wood "table top" from Lowes. Bought four heavy duty wheels of the bolt w/nut variety intended for tool boxes from Home Depot. Drilled four holes in the BOTTOM metal base pipe (carefully placed so they do not interfere with the rocking feature) and added them to the stool to create my "rock-'n-roller". It can do triple duty: side table or, w/any throw pillow easily replaced as worn (or as your mood changes) , a spare seat or ottoman ... and can be easily rolled anywhere with the push of a foot. I liked it well enought that I later ended up buying a second one (also at a thrift store) and now have a matching pair -- gave away both the old ones. If you keep the red chair w/matching pillow, you could use it on your own "rock-'n-roller". Not a fan of animal hide. Not a fan of tiny floor lamps -- much prefer the original dark metal w/dark metal of the desk. Small black metal/glass side table would work well with that desk. Floating shelf or wall hung box shelf beneath the tv is a good idea -- you could add a hinge and support so it might be a drop leaf shelf, leaving more room when the murphy bed is in use. Beneath that and/or the art, have you considered building a bit of storage for small office and/or media related items IN the wall between the studs with little more than the doors (think ... truly upscale oak base cabinet doors and drawer front for a shallow drawer) showing in the room ... especially if the art and tv are directly opposite from each other? One drawback ... that's a "cabinet" that stays put rather than can be moved.

I really like the bookcase on the accent wall - seems like it would overpower the wall next to the kitchen entrance. It looks really nice where it’s at in the pic. I agree with you about the gorgeous reflections on it too. If you don’t *have* to have a 2 person office I’d leave it as-is and enjoy the open space. If you do have to add a second desk would it work to put one facing the windows in front of the railing? You’d have to forgo the chaise (which sounds amazing) but it may be an idea to play with.
