Faux Panel Stone - Not loving it. Need recommendations

So it’s not awful but..it turned out darker than I would’ve liked. The samples looked lighter. I think it’s the painted faux grout color the manufacturer used. I like the German schmear look but these are polyurethane faux panels so I’m afraid it would ruin the faux stone. Any suggestions or recommendations to lighten it up without damaging the panels? Btw, mantel is being stained and installed on the front. It won’t be sitting on the top like you see it. This is a very small space (it’s a condo on Lake Erie). TIA for any recommendations. I wanted limestone since it’s sourced in this area but with the weight and being on the 3rd fl I figured it was easier to buy and install limestone faux panels.

IMO any faux anything is always yucky. Now it is in if IMO you hate it get rid of it it will not grow on you but just the opposite . The TV is way too high for proper viewing on the FP. Is than a gas FP? If so why not just a nice tile surround in a neutral color or even just drywall would have been better . Real stone veneer could have worked too. The other aprt is the color does not work with your flooring. I think now I would just paint it all in a color that works with the floor add the mantel in a darker color than the paint and move the TV elsewhere.

It’s an electric insert. It’s a condo so options were limited.

We used Centurion, Arizona color, a mix of Cutface and Ledge. If I am picturing it right, I think putting the rock on the window seats would be very nice. Seems like it would pull it together. We also used it on two interior walls, in our sunroom. Ours isn't rough to touch, so if your legs rubbed it, I don't think it would cause any discomfort. But I can picture how it would maybe stick out a little. Maybe you could put a wider seat top on the window seats? Here is a link that might be useful: pic of the stone

If you google for whitewash brick and other variations of that, instructions come up with a lot of suggestions and pictures. Frankly, some of them look awful, IMO. It's hard to achieve a balanced look that isn't blotchy. A lot depends on the porosity of the brick, I'm sure. One of the links I found suggested using tinted latex stain but offered no pictures or specific directions. Even using a tan color for your wash will look white or almost white against the dark brick and mortar, but next to the white trim you should see it isn't really white. I can picture the room with a softened brick look but don't know how to achieve it without a lot of trial - and probably error! And it's such a large amount of square footage to cover, you want consistency in your technique or the walls will all look different. I'd spend some time searching online and youtube for specifics. Let us know how it goes.

On the subject of people trying to open fake doors, FWIW: We have knobs on fake doors at a much more accessible height than yours. We included the knobs for symmetry's sake, since these cabinets stand on one side of my refrigerator and there are matching operable doors with knobs on the other side of the fridge. About four people tried to open them when they came into the finished kitchen for the first time, when in the fun of inspection they were poking into all the new cupboards. No one has touched them since then. It hasn't been a problem at all.

Go pebble vs plaster. Plaster pools especially darker color ones mottle. You will sign on your contract stating the plasterer has no control over it. It will happen end of story. Pebble pools eliminate all of that. They stay true to their color and remove 90% of the paster issues. When choosing a color the door of the plaster or pebbles is not the color you will end up with. The water and your pools surroundings change the final color. Even the exact surface color in one yard to the other will look different even if it was next door. As an example tan makes the water look green. Every pool Co has their favorite med blue with some lagoon name to it. You can add abalone shells to give a nice sparkle to it. When choosing tiles the larger the tile the less grout which means less failure. Smaller tiles might be needed if there are tight radiuses. Most important is to actually see a pool co's work. Make sure written in that contract the OWNER will be there during the process and to inspect the final work. Ask for THEIR recommendation for a Co to maintain the pool for the first year. This way they cant blame failure on YOU!! Pool Cos are notorious for using day laborers and handing out Co shirts on the job site. You will then find out why somebody with a 5th grade education shouldn't be doing the work or a well educated plaster person in the country legally. I don't care how nice they are if they don't understand what a quality job is how do you expect them to do one?

If you want a light grout color maybe paint the grout the wall color. It will be tedious but you can do it.

It does look like the grout is too dark. Also, the mantel should cover the entire width of the surround - it's not wide enough.

I think it looks pretty good and goes with your walls. I'd make sure you pick up some of those colors in the furniture. It'll look great.

I agree that the dark grout does not look great. I like the idea of painting the grout. You could experiment on some scraps before you tackled the fireplace.

The mantle is just sitting on top of it temporarily. That’s getting moved. A client ordered 2 and gave us one of the mantels but looking to stain it a different color and mount it above the electric fp not on the shelf.

Are you sure you received the right version? I think I saw your product online, the one that says limestone has dark grout. The grout on the sierra sand looks lighter.

Is this just completed? Is the grout still wet, because it will lighten as it dries. If it was just done, wait about two weeks and see what you think. Take photos so you can objectively compare now vs two weeks from now.

I would start thinking of a rug to put in front of it, which contains its warmer colors and maybe other darker tones like mossy greens.

Jennifer, that's an actual stone fireplace. I was just looking for an example of the grout color matching the stone color, which I think looks better.

@deegw I had a sample of sierra sand but it looked pinkish on the room.
