Please help me update my LR
Comments (20)I think the end table you picked has a nice modern vibe and the price is very reasonable. It has an open and contemporary feel. If you replaced yours with these I think it would really change the look of your room quite a bit. They would also go well with your coffee table. I'm realizing one thing that looks "off" is that the long end of the coffee table is not aligned with the long end of the rug, but rather is perpendicular to it, and that makes the layout not flow as well as it could. I'm probably being dense but if your rug is 9 feet wide and there's another foot or two between the area rug and the TV, would 10 or 11 feet from the TV really be too close? I think until you try moving a few things around you won't know if another arrangement is better or not. I would also suggest putting some bright pillows on the beige sofa instead of the brown ones you have, which blend into everything else, including the shutters. Pillows with turquoise and beige stripes or checks might be nice, and would contrast with the rug and give some relief from the solid colors of the furniture and pillows. If you try googling "living rooms with Oriental carpets" you'll see that many of them have different colors and patterns of accessories, paintings, pillows etc. I've just spotted your wall art, which I probably didn't notice because it's so muted, and there again something brighter and more colorful would give a new look to your living room without having to spend too much money....See Morefamily room tv nook help!!
Comments (14)Thanks for the great ideas everyone! The wainscoting with camouflaged doors is really clever. Yes, my original plan was to drywall it in and put a low credenza or console table with art or photos on the wall. The front door is on the other side of the arch and I really wanted to create a small closet with access from the arch. We only have one very small closet for the entire main floor and it’s not convenient for coats and shoes when you enter the house. The first contractor thought that might disrupt the arch, but I think I’ll get another opinion because it’s not a load bearing wall. Thanks for the great ideas!...See MoreMy family room and breakfast nook need help!
Comments (33)Sorry for the delay in responding. I have a senior graduating from high school this month and we have been busy with senior activities. I'm not feeling the whitewashed on the brick. Too country I think. I'd like to tone down or get rid of the pink altogether. I definitely don't like the black surround. I agree with Grover that it looks like a big black hole. I finally opened the fireplace screen (first time doing so!) and it's so dirty inside the box, I don't even want to go near it. Not sure I'm up for the fireplace project yet. Would like to get it converted to all gas and paint inside the box too. Probably best if I wait until after I get my daughter off to college later this summer. Would like to add additional lighting too as Izzy suggests. Can I ask for opinions on furnishing the rest of the room? I've decided against the chairs and media console I referenced at the start of this dilemma. I want to have a transitional-coastal feel to the space, if there is such a thing. I've had my eye on this swivel chair from All Modern in the Classic Smoke fabric. The color pulls one of the tones from my sofa. Two of these to go side by side across from the fireplace. The height of the arms and back are the same as the sofa, so scale should be good....See MoreHelp with TV NOOK
Comments (17)You need to have a unit built in that nook which fills it up. Than you will LOVE your television. Your current console is just too small. The television and the height is fine, have some pretty shelves built into that area and enjoy. If you can have lights put in it and maybe create some glass shelves(assuming you do not need storage and baskets on wood shelves), you could display heirloom whatnots, or your collection of books(wood shelving), or just have cabinet doors made and only you know what you have stored in that area? In your case, I would make it coordinate with any other cabinets in the area, if there are any, or just let it be white. Use stain grade wood, EVEN IF YOU PAINT IT WHITE, because the voids in paint grade wood, can be ridiculous. There are so that a quality cabinet maker will not use "paint grade' wood at all, likely, as the wood sometimes bleeds it's grain thru lighter color paint, and the wood putty may also..you just want your surface to be smooth and without knotholes, whether painted or stained.........and avoid the tiny chicken nest/ cubby holes if you can keep the shelves supported without them, imho. Just keep it clean and straight lines, and fill up the area. You can paint the back of the wall a darker hue of blue or put wallpaper there? or whatever you won't tire looking at, and save the expense of having a back put on the unit perhaps? Whatever your contractor/cabinet maker/woodworker, recommends. You might even place a mirror on the back of the top bridge of shelves with some tiny lights to spotlight special items you have to place there.....See MoreTam Jewell
