more wardrobe advice, please
Comments (86)Well, we have just arrived home and I have to tell you that at least 3 people commented on my dress and one woman I didn't even know came up just to comment on it and ask if I had bought it out of town. I hope you will find this amusing, but I decided at the last minute to buy a different dress. I actually purchased the dress I wore at 3pm today and we were at the event at 630! I will try to post a pic tomorrow. I just want to say such a huge thank you to everyone for getting involved and saving me from wearing something completely inappropriate. I know in the big scheme of things this was just a friviolity, but it meant a lot to us to go out and have fun with friends and I wouldn't have enjoyed myself nearly as much if I didn't feel like I fit in wardrobe-wise. Thanks again!...See MoreToday's Trivia Quiz Mar. 22

Comments (18)Martha, I enjoyed reading your blog about your cookbook club. Sounds like y'all have great fun and super road trips! (Click on photo to see full recipe) I made this recipe the month that we had a brunch theme. It is from the Birmingham Junior League Tables of Content cookbook. If you need a meat to pair with it, try Millionaire Bacon. I first ate Millionaire Bacon at Fred's Coffee Shop in Sausalito, CA. It was divine. I use the recipe below from BaconToday.com, except I cut back on the cayenne and black pepper. I probably only use 1/2 teaspoon of each. And, 5 Tablespoons of brown sugar will only cover a bit over a 1/2 lb of bacon for me. Millionaire Bacon 1 pound of thick-cut bacon 5 tbsp packed brown sugar 1 tsp. Cayenne Pepper 1 tsp. Black Pepper Directions: Line a baking pan with foil. Combine all of your spices and sugar together into a bowl and mix thoroughly. If you want your bacon more coated in sweet and spicy flavor, add more ingredients to your liking. Apply liberally to each strip of bacon by taking each strip and hand rubbing them. Bake until crisp for 20- 30 minutes (depending upon your crispy liking). Please let your bacon cool a little after you’ve made this recipe. NOTE from bbstx: Keep a close eye on the bacon after about the 15 minute mark. The ends will burn. I sometimes cover the ends with strips of foil to prevent burning. Do not attempt to drain this bacon on paper towels. You will end up picking little pieces of paper off the very sticky bacon - or, if you're like me, you'll get frustrated and just eat the little giblets of paper!...See MoreAre cocktails a generational thing?
Comments (39)Interesting discussion. I do think it depends on your culture, and different cultures have different drinking traditions. However, America tends to have a big consumer culture with various trends being pushed. I'm a late boomer who grew up in a middle American small town, and most people did not drink that much, and when they did, it was beer or if you were into the heavy stuff, hard liquor with maybe a little soda water or a splash of a soft drink, aka "rum and coke." There was however, a big push during the 60's for sophistication among the masses via advertising. My folks got a very swanky bar set for a wedding gift, and both had recipe books for cocktails in their libraries. They lived in San Francisco for a while so became big wine drinkers before it was trendy. I grew up drinking wine, unlike most of my peers. I remember my folks being into making daquaris, which were a popular MCM drink. We also hung out with some folks from Russia/Eastern Europe who put vodka in everything! And some Italians and others who made their own dessert wines and liqueurs. Those days seem quite sophisticated to me looking back on them. I'm allergic to beer, and I remember in college always being the weird one out because I either drank wine, which seemed too fru fru in college, or a mixed drink with vodka, which was pretty expensive! That was before the days of every kind of "cooler" and mixed drink being packaged and sold like soda pop. Hard root beer, hard fruit sodas, hard lemonade, etc. That is definitely driving today's younger generation's taste. I love all the mixed drinks, but they are expensive and full of calories in which I can no longer indulge. My bladder can't take much alcohol either. So, as usual, youth is wasted on the young. I wish I had lived in the days where I could have both the money and occasion to indulge in a cocktail or two on a semi-regular basis. Too often, and it isn't that special, IMHO. But can add a fun twist to a social gathering of friends....See Morebbstx
