Where would you put the outlet(s) in this island?
Comments (14)I will be having sockets ( as outlets are called in the UK!) on the ends of my island. I have a sink (800mm), Belfast type on one length like you have but mine is positioned centrally to the length. I have still got the option of other locations of sockets as builders haven t even laid our floor yet and cabinet maker hasn't even started on the cabinets but, even so, I'd like to be further away from the sink when using electric items I'd also like to keep them well out of the splash zone for safety. ( my hubby could soak an entire kitchen when washing up, so could two of my daughters!) I think you'll be fine with them positioned on the end. Oh, and happy and healthy pregnancy, 7, wow, have a friend with six and I have four, love big families xx...See MoreKitchen Island 11' x 4' - electrical outlets?
Comments (6)First, an outlet is almost always required by code. In my city, you need one outlet per island, more if you want, and you can't put an outlet under an overhang that's more than something like 6" (I don't remember the exact distance). In any event, they wouldn't be too useful to you under the overhang anyway. In your configuration, I'd want two outlets - one to serve the left side of the sink and one to serve the right side of the sink. Is the picture your actual layout? If so, your KD didn't do you any favors, since there's no place to put outlets on the front. We had a 4" space designed into ours just for the outlet....See MoreWould this kitchen island outlet be considered not to code?
Comments (3)We installed a plug mold along the full length of the underside of our island. Our notoriously picky inspector didn't have any issue with that (and we love the convenience of having power easily available everywhere). I can't think of a reason why an individual outlet would be any worse -- other than you maybe having to install additional outlets every couple of feet. Personally, I would always err on the side of having more rather than fewer outlets. You never know when you will need to plug in a couple of appliances at the same time. And plug-in power strips are a big nuisance. We have plug molds in many places, and quad outlets in other places....See MoreLarge 10' x 5' Kitchen Island needs help with outlets!
Comments (22)We do outlets all the time in island. Usually you have a decorative side panel on the island ( 3 /4 thick plus the cabinet box is 3/4 thick = 1 1/2" ) A shallow electrical box is about 1 1/4" so no additional columns are needed. Is a shallow box not allowed anymore?? Can you do something like this?? You can also shorten the cabinets by 3" or 1 1/2" and add a base end panel to create a channel and space for the outlet. We have been able to do outlets under the seating overhang but they had to be vertical and as close to the front edge of the cabinet as possible. Do you really need 4? I do not know how that is calculated - sorry. Please post the resolve to all of this - it will be very helpful to others. I also agree with moving the prep sink - either switch it with the microwave or put it to the left of the stove. I have several customers we've done that for and they love having a totally clear island and the convenience of a sink right by the stove. Good luck! Post pics when done!...See MoreDeWayne
