Would this kitchen island outlet be considered not to code?

We installed a plug mold along the full length of the underside of our island. Our notoriously picky inspector didn't have any issue with that (and we love the convenience of having power easily available everywhere).

I can't think of a reason why an individual outlet would be any worse -- other than you maybe having to install additional outlets every couple of feet.

Personally, I would always err on the side of having more rather than fewer outlets. You never know when you will need to plug in a couple of appliances at the same time. And plug-in power strips are a big nuisance. We have plug molds in many places, and quad outlets in other places.

If the outlet is 6 1/4“ under the edge of the counter, then it wouldn’t pass. It has to be within 6” of the counter edge.

Thanks Petey Racer, I was afraid you were going to tell me I needed the exposed outlets despite my hair brained idea. I used to be from your area in NYS and from my dealings with elecrical inspectors, I suspected it wouldn't fly, but now I'm in Florida and from what I've seen in the attic of our newer home as far as wiring goes, it just may get approved here. Yes, I'll definitely check w/ my town's code. Just planning ahead... Another idea, based on histokitch's kitchen sill (see picture below): - putting sillite on the window sill: See how the window sill is almost flushed w/ the countertop? I could put the sillite there, yes? I like to have a flat countertop w/out any edges to go around. I'm getting stainless steel countertop integrated with a stainless sink, so it's just 1 piece w/ no edges (oooh, I couldn't stand my drop-in sink in my previous home, couldn't get the edges/rim clean enough). LOVE your kitchen! (I'm also having 30" countertops.) Sillite: Kinda like jsweenc's kitchen, except of standing vertical, the outlets would be laying down flat. I will be having sockets ( as outlets are called in the UK!) on the ends of my island. I have a sink (800mm), Belfast type on one length like you have but mine is positioned centrally to the length. I have still got the option of other locations of sockets as builders haven t even laid our floor yet and cabinet maker hasn't even started on the cabinets but, even so, I'd like to be further away from the sink when using electric items I'd also like to keep them well out of the splash zone for safety. ( my hubby could soak an entire kitchen when washing up, so could two of my daughters!) I think you'll be fine with them positioned on the end. Oh, and happy and healthy pregnancy, 7, wow, have a friend with six and I have four, love big families xx

But, but, but, it surely doesn't cost "thousands" to install undercabinet lighting! Here is one undercabinet light (wireless) for under $20 . Granted it was 10 years ago, but we added undercabinet lighting to our existing kitchen cabinets (wired). I purchased the lights at home depot and had an electrician come out. I'm sure it didn't even take him more than a few hours (?). Good call. Yes, you need to make sure placement is within the required distances. Usually, that's not a difficult thing to do; and your contractor or architect should be able to help you with that. All of our plugmolds are 5½" from the edge of the counter for this reason.

Similarly, we had to be careful with where we mounted our upper cabinets, as our outlets are underneath the cabinets as opposed to in the backsplash.

But our architect knew all these numbers and it was really a non-issue to make sure we stayed well within the code requirements.
