Got a question for those who know the codes, I don't want opinions. I have installed a kitchen Island that houses a cooktop. I need to have outlets on the island but prefer not to have them exposed on the sides or back. I'm considering adding those hinges that make the top panel of a sink base tilt out at 45degees for storage of sponges etc. Then I'd install an approved outlet box at each end to the back of the top panel and wire it via flexible conduit, it would also be a GFI outlet. Then, when I need to use an outlet, I could just pull the panel down and expose the outlets. This top panel is in front of the range top.

Can anyone tell me if it would be approved via code.

I think this is a call for your local inspector.
If it were me I'd say no good.

You could have them anyway if you want, but only after the minimum island receptacle requirements were met.

Thanks Petey Racer, I was afraid you were going to tell me I needed the exposed outlets despite my hair brained idea. I used to be from your area in NYS and from my dealings with elecrical inspectors, I suspected it wouldn't fly, but now I'm in Florida and from what I've seen in the attic of our newer home as far as wiring goes, it just may get approved here. I'll have to give them a call. Thanks Again

Yes, an electrical outlet is required for islands. If you are on slab, then only good way is to trench the slab for the wire. However, an outlet isn't required for a mobile cart. 24"x36" is small for an island, but perfect for a cart. Don't forget that you need a minimum of 36" all the way around it for proper clearances for an island as well. For a cart, because it's mobile, it can shift back and forth to give you more clearance as needed.

Our plugmold was placed in my cabinets just above the top drawers below the granite top of the island. The cabinet maker allowed for the plugmold placement so I don’t know if there would still be room for you to install this way.

@greenhouze The full covers (and there may be more, these are just the ones I've saved) were Safety 1st OutSmart Outlet Shield for the full covers, and the half (which may not cover the center of a GFI) are just titled "Electrical Outlet Covers Baby Proofing - Bigger Size Prevents Choking Hazard, 12" in the Sure Basics store on Amazon. For the vinyls, I haven't chosen a company yet (my backsplash is still on my living room floor), but there are plenty of custom vinyl/sticker printers out there. If you'd rather spend less, you can just print a color photo of them and decoupage them on (might want to seal it with some kind of spray first to keep the ink from running, but it depends on how particular you are about a perfect match). Either way, I'm going oversized so that I can match up the pattern. You'll also want to make sure the white balance on your camera is right before you do this.

If you know you do not want want outlets in the end panel or waterfall, you can design the island with columns that will accommodate an outlet, like here: If you do not want to take up the storage or seating space these columns require, then you have to put them in the waterfall like here: Some inspectors will let it slide if they see an outlet under the overhang, but it's a big risk to assume yours will. Also, it is not safe nor functional to have a cord that wraps around an overhang, especially when there is seating. If your island will be used for prep, position the outlets where they will be most useful.
