Please help me choose/find a new sofa-pix galore
Comments (6)I thought my budget was reasonable too, but most of the sofas I see in that price range just look really cheap and poorly made. I have seen some that are good quality, but are very modern looking with the square arms and block feet. Do you think I could do a more modern sofa with my chairs (which are being scratched to death by the cat even as we speak)? Thanks for the options dee and yayagal. Those are lovely, but I should have mentioned that I have a real aversion to leather - not sure why. I should also mention that I'm in a small city in Canada so furniture prices are (I seem to be finding out) quite a bit higher. Here are links to a mid-priced brand of sofa many retailers carry here. If anyone has an inclination, have a look and see if there is anything that would go with my chairs. Here is a link that might be useful: van gogh sofas...See MorePlease help picking a new backsplash, I hate this one...
Comments (34)I don't think you're playing it safe. I think you're finding your style. We all mess up with our choices. If you take a look at the color tone of all your favorites and the one you installed; they are all light. So that's where you start. A light backsplash is definitely a perfect match for your stone. You cabs are darker and something light with some visual interest will be great. I think people find that visual interest in different things. Yours just happens NOT to be in tumbled stone. One is not "more right" then the other. I happen to find I'm always drawn to glass... it's just a matter where you taste lies. I can't wait to see it photoshopped. I have no clue how to do that or I do it for you!...See MorePlease help me choose the right size sofa (s) for my space
Comments (14)thanks again everyone! I stopped by a local furniture store and she recommended a 10 x 10 sectional and a chair and a half. I think we could go either direction with the sectional if we go that route- facing window (yes, nice views!) or facing door (which would give more seating closer to the tv. To answer a few questions: this is our only 'living/family' space. There is not a secondary living room for entertaining. We don't entertain much and when we do we all end up at the kitchen island. We do spend a lot of time in our basement. It is a very integral living area to our house- two of my kids have bedrooms there, we have the secondary family/tv watching space, and a bar area. Definitely use! As far as the tv location we spent a lot of time discussing one side vs the other. Ultimately I think we are happy with the left side of the fireplace for the tv. As I said earlier, it is farthest from the main entrance to the house. Also as far as furniture shift I prefer to shift away from the entry rather than towards it. There are a couple negatives and one is the glare, at certain times of the year during late afternoons. Most of the time it's fine. We have a lot of privacy on the back of our house so we have elected not to have shades over the windows....but certainly if the tv glare bothered us THAT MUCH we could add shades to help that. Yes, there is outlet in the floor, however floor lamps are iffy because I have a special needs child who is older and has in the past broken a lot of lamps because he doesn't know not to knock them over. So, my other question then is lets say we do a sectional that faces the window (and therefore backs against the entry way). And so we put a sofa table behind it. Then do we have a second sofa table behind the other part of the sectional as well? Two sofa tables? Love all the input and ideas!...See MoreHate my living room. Please help me fix!
Comments (19)Thank you all for your great ideas. Diana, the living room is the 1st room you enter after passing through a small enclosed entry on our large front porch we also have the deck 9x25 along the side of our house. We live in a New England seaside community so we live and entertain on the 2 areas all summer, so removing that door wouldn’t work. We have a family room off the other end of the deck with a slider. We use the living room for holidays and when company is here I bring in some chairs but there just is no room. I would love to seat 6 comfortably and have a TV tucked in somewhere for the times when grandkids are here or my husband and I don’t want to watch same thing. Other than that, it is the main road through my house! Ugh. Deco, I have attempted to break up this long room by centering love seat opposite fireplace which also allows tv viewing. Put the desk area and storage of grandkids arts and crafts stuff there. Maybe less bulky furniture would free up some space. I did have the tv on a lovely cedar chest but last year put it in that stand in order to confine the chachkis to one space. Lol. Any other spot for TV? We just converted from oil to gas, FP, so plan on converting the fireplace too. Do use it sometimes in winter. Took out the wall between dining and kitchen years ago and it is right next to fam room so not sure how that would work. And you hit the nail on the head with the wall space. Would be happy losing or gaining any furniture if it helps. Only room in my house I hate and it’s the 1st anyone sees. Thanks for replying and all ideas. I really appreciate...See Moremytwo cents
