Please help me choose/find a new sofa-pix galore

Yes, it's me again. Yet another question about my living room (but with a new username after some computer probs.)

Our old sofa cushions have seen better days and stitching is starting to fray here and there. I'm saving for a new sofa, but money is tight. Budget is probably going to be about $2500.

I slipcovered the old one in white duck, but while I love the look, it never quite matched the chairs and I was always worried about the kids with it.

My dream sofa is the Restoration Hardware English roll arm, but we don't live anywhere near a RH so that is out. I've been to the high end furniture stores in our area, but this style seems to sell for around $5000 minimum. The less expensive lines don't seem to have a similar style.

I could get our new sofa professionally slipcovered or reupholstered for about $2000 (with new cushions). And I do like the style of the sofa with the room, but part of me thinks that if I'm paying all that money, I should get the sofa of my dreams.

I'd love your ideas on colour, fabric, style of sofas that would go well. I'm thinking of a camel coloured velvet at the moment, but am open to other ideas.

Uh oh, I hope I haven't used up my quota of responses ....you've all been so helpful in the past. Note the lamp - wouldn't have got it without you. Ditto the chandelier..... bump

Well, House Beautiful this ain't, but I agree it's hard to visualize without a photo, so here is one. The light from the window interferes with the exposure but you get the idea. The picture over the sofa won't be staying (wrong size, wrong height, we aren't attached to it anyway). I will have fun finding something for that space later, no hurry. We may or may not get another rug someday, no hurry there either (one of our dogs was very sick on the old one near the end of her life). The coffee table was a Target bargain to serve as train table, art table, laundry-folding table, etc; it's probably not a long-term piece. The things that will stay for sure are the brown recliner (new, DH chose, we are still not really used to the dark color) and the '80's lamp behind it. You can't tell in the photo but the lamp is sort of a butterscotch color, a leftover from DH's bachelor days; and even though orange is one of my least favorite colors, I like it somehow. So ugly it's retro, that sort of thing. The wall "art" nearby (one print is not in photo) both echo the butterscotch-terracotta color and also have a sagey green which coordinates fine with all the fabric samples I posted. Aloe is the most unlike it, but being all the way across the room I think it'd be OK. Oh yes, wall paint and drapes will stay the same. It doesn't have to be one of the fabrics I posted, by the way -- those are just the pictures that were handy, and those are the shades of green I've narrowed down to. (At least for today.) That particular fabric is 44000 double rubs, from what I unearthed on the Internet, and some of the colorways are available locally for a good price (which doesn't mean I have to use it). Roarah, thanks for the photo -- I also have a sample of a fabric that looks similar to yours, so it's very helpful to see it on a finished piece. The legs of my sofa are part of the frame, as palimpsest says, so they can't be changed. So, seeing this photo -- darker green because of kids and black dog hair? Lighter green to make up for having such a dark chair? Green at all? Doesn't really matter as long as it's not burgundy plaid? (lol)

Ok, I've been thinking about this room all day. LOL I even went through a ton of fabrics to try to find something I could recommend. The problem is, I don't think the tones in the photo of the curtains is coming across very well so it's making it near impossible. If you can take a really good clear crisp photo of the fabric in a flat position (drape it over the chair) that may help. The other thing I really feel the need to throw out there is overall the room is just lacking color and I don't think canning the red is necessarily the answer. I know you said you've grown tired of it, but maybe that's because that's all there is. Why not just keep the red and bring in a 3rd color to the mix. Olive Green, Navy Blue? Rule of thumb is to have your colors in odd numbers so you really need a 3rd color anyway. You don't even necessarily have to reupholster the chair to accomplish this. You could just bring in some color with the use of pillow covers, a new rug and even paint. If the chair print isn't working with the drapes, add some separation by putting a throw in a contrasting color over the back of it. That said, if you still really want to change the fabric on the chair, post up a new photo, there are several of us who just love to shop fabrics, we just need a really good picture to do it with. :c)

Just want to share that I think your room is quite attractive already - I love the rug raven shared (and the one always1step ordered !).... I cannot visualize on the fireplace but everything else selected works great together. ( and seriously not to push you, but that rug!!! and it sure seems like a great deal to me at the current price......)

I like the tan or cream in the rug. The sample swatch you show looks a bit too yellow, at least on my monitor. Agree with no green. I tend to like larger pieces of furniture, like sofas, to be neutral.

2000? wow where do you live ?! sounds high. I think your budget is pretty reasonable and you shouldnt have any trouble finding something. If you do decide to upholster since it is a very nice couch now, Maybe a dark brown and creme houndstooth would look good with the floral chairs. You can go to online fabric websites and find good deals. fabrics.com? maybe. cant remember any names right now. I have a really really cheap sofa for FR that is microfiber, I think its called and its so easy to clean and it was dirt cheap in an oyster color which I might like best for that room to go with the walls and chairs. I've always loved your chairs, and I'm usually not partial to florals. I agree the white looks a bit stark against it (though you did an unbelievable job making the slipcovers!); is it possible to do a tea stain to warm them up. Your idea for the velvet couch sounds great, but I wonder about cat hair? Here's a really nice leather alternative.

I thought my budget was reasonable too, but most of the sofas I see in that price range just look really cheap and poorly made. I have seen some that are good quality, but are very modern looking with the square arms and block feet. Do you think I could do a more modern sofa with my chairs (which are being scratched to death by the cat even as we speak)?

Thanks for the options dee and yayagal. Those are lovely, but I should have mentioned that I have a real aversion to leather - not sure why. I should also mention that I'm in a small city in Canada so furniture prices are (I seem to be finding out) quite a bit higher.

Here are links to a mid-priced brand of sofa many retailers carry here. If anyone has an inclination, have a look and see if there is anything that would go with my chairs.
