Yes Amazing Aunt this happens to me as well. So what I do generally is I write everything down on an email and then copy and paste it to here. If I have to make any corrections I make it on the email page and then I copy and paste my corrections. In other words I don't use this to type words at all.

If you are on a mobile device (phone or tablet), you can type the word, then choose it from the auto fill bar. Tedious, but it works.

(and sorry but I have no ideas for you. I notice on my phone if I try to reply to a post when I press the space bar, it disappears for me as well. I haven't been able to figure it out as other apps work properly on my phone. I post here from my chromebook')

That happens to me with my Samsung tablet but not on my computer. If I want to post with my tablet I type it in a memo app then copy and paste like yeonassky.

I deleted my first post with a fix. You need to Google the problem for your phone-desktop-tablet-operating system- etc. It is something messed up in your computer or operating system. IT CAN BE RESET. I had problems with ads only in Spanish and a VERY slow computer. I reset Chrome to original and it fixed it. I have had the same problems posting before and IT CAN BE FIXED! The fix is different for every computer and every operating system, If the first fix doesn't work, try another.

It is so easy to touch the wrong key at the wrong time.

^^^No. When this many people (we've had these conversations numerous times before) have the same problem with this site and only this site, it's the site not the devices.

I have had the exact same problem here, only on 1 device (Samsung tablet, for what that's worth). For whatever reason, that tablet would erase the preceding word I typed here whenever I hit the space bar.

I refused to give up, and kept tinkering with the tablet and trying different things. What I finally figured out for me was that if I turned off the predictive text, the tablet stopped erasing anything when I hit the space bar.

So many people here report similar problems, and I swear I've only ever heard of this "hitting the space bar deletes the preceding word" problem on this particular site. It is very annoying and some folks have not been able to figure it out on their own....

Dear Aunt Audrey - you say you can't post here....and yet you just posted a lovely post which tells us how you can't post here. LOL.

It may be that the amount of effort it took for that to post isn't worth it for you - and if that's it, I get it. But please try some of the other suggestions here about what's worked for other people. Sometimes it's been a browser issue, sometimes it is whether they are coming in via Houzz vs the GW platform, sometimes it seems specific to a particular device.

GW will not help you. They have never replied to any of my requests for help either. You are on your own to figure it out - but there are so many smart people here who may have ideas for you to try....

Me too! I have tried to post text since last October. It will occasionally let me post pictures. I can't use my Samsung tablet which I prefer. I have to use the family laptop. I have asked Houzz for help repeatedly, but what they told me to do doesn't work.

Fascinating!! That's a new twist - so the words disappear in the comment box if she's replying to an existing post - but not if she's starting her own thread? That's wild!

Littlebug, do you know if she's trying to post on a phone or tablet? I have not heard of anything like this occurring while on a desktop using the website. The app is definitely glitchy as heck, and phones/tablets seem to be at the root of a lot of problems here too.

I just turned off predictive text and I am typing words without them being erased. Finger crossed!

I have never posted here from my iPhone , only the desk top where I do most of my stuff. If you have a desktop, AA , try that.

I only have the problem AAA describes on my Samsung phone, not on my desktop. I've learned to just use the predictive text, but when I go back and edit a word within the body of the text, it doesn't vanish. I'll have to try turning off predictive text. I can't recall if my iPod does the same or not.

One thing I've noticed is that even on my desktop, it seems when a new comment is posted while I'm typing a reply, my post disappears into the ether when I hit Submit, so I often select all and copy, just in case.

Shery, I apologize, I just turned off all the keyboard helpers and now it works fine. BUT I'm learning just how fat my fat fingers are!

Not worth it, for just this site. and yes, it is a SITE problem if they're not compatible with common settings on one of the world's most common devices.

As for the OP’s issues with responding, I had stuff like that for several months, a while back. I don’t recall the details, if it was that I couldn’t start a thread or if I couldn’t respond, or if it switched between the two. Lots of helpful people tried to help, giving me houzz links vs gardenweb links, etc.but nothing helped. Eventually it resolved itself.

Totally agree FOAS. I also think the chances of that changing are slim to none. This is not a big money-maker for them and whether the site is well designed is not a priority.

No. What you're describing is a browser problem, not a hardware or operating system problem.

The site coding can have idiosyncratic incompatibilities with certain browser/hardware combinations. When I encounter this, the first thing to do is to clear cache and history in the browser. If that doesn't work, the next thing to try is a different browser (not previously used for this site). If that doesn't work, the next thing to do is use a different device - PCs normally always work.

Another funky thing is that this site exists in two versions - the Gardenweb version, and the Houzz version. They're not identical nor always in sync. Sometimes things work in one and not in the other. I find fewer problems with the Houzz version.

On my phone and turned off predictive text and the glitch isn't happening now - cool!

But I do like using it everywhere else, so I think I'll continue using my desktop computer for this site as much as possible.

And I don't like using houzz.com at all. It shows my full name and photo as default. I didn't ever knowingly sign up that way either. Houzz apparently has registered my Google profile - through Chrome...?

I’m on an iPhone and have no problems except with predictive text. On my Macbook, if I’m using firefox, if I try to cut and paste any text, it all goes bonkers; Chrome works fine.

AAfAftAfteAfter computer, using landline with slow loading, died, I've been using a Samsung phone (over 4 yrs old - phone sometimes not ring, sometimes temporary blockage or garbled: original seller recommends replacing).

Reduplication, as above, when I try to amend earlier text, which began "Using Samsung phone ...".

Problem I have also is if I type a wrong letter in a word and delete the wrong letter and write the correct one, if I don't hit "space", then "delete", it disappears. And if I move cursor after writing a word before I hit "space" - that word disappears into thin air!

My son recommends writing my comment on notepad, copying to here.

Thank you Ally De!!!!! I turned off predictive text. I havent been able to post anything here for months and months. I can type on other sites, so it might just be particular to Houzz.

I have fewer problems in the Gardenweb version, but I am using Firefox instead of Chrome.

I only use Chrome for Facebook (I have it blocked in Firefox) and for filling out government or real estate forms.

I am starting to wonder if it's there is something weird/specific to Samsung too. That partially seems far-fetched, but it's interesting how many people with problems are on Samsung mobile devices.

And Elmer is correct about Houzz vs. GW. They have tried to merge 2 completely different platforms into one, and frankly I'm surprised it's gone as well as it has. The Houzz platform offers more user functionality than the GW one does. Houzz built their own platform - they bought/inherited the existing GW one. When I'm on a desktop and having problems, if it's not been a specific browser issue for me, then it's usually fixed by making sure I'm on the Houzz site.

And yes, it's all glitchy. I take it on as a challenge. LOL.

I can type in answers on my iPad or iPhone as long as I do not use predictive text. If I forget and hit a predictive text suggestion, it goes down as a huge word composed of whatever I have typed plus the predictive text word tacked on. For example, if I start typing ”vacation” then stop after a few letters and choose the predictive text option it comes out like this: ”vacvacation”. This only happens on the Houzz site.

I don't have any Samsung smart-devices. My phone is an iPhone. I occasionally peruse GW from it but haven't posted, either new or comment, more than 3 or 4 times. I don't have auto-correct or auto-complete enabled on it, or in my computer browser. I'm not understanding how predictive text is source of this problem. The text-munging apparently is visible when it occurs. Does the user of the device have no ability to review and correct it before submitting the post?

I think that's baloney. All hardware manufacturers have their own house-brand apps, and the two smartphone OS companies (Google for Android, Apple for iOS) have many of the same. As an example, on an iPhone, you can use Apple Maps or the competing Google Maps. The iphone has Apple's contact and calendar apps pre-loaded and there are Google ones that substitute one for one. (In these three cases, I think the Google apps are better). Also, an Apple mail app or a Google Gmail app in its place.

All of the Android smartphone hardware manufacturers work closely with Google (and vice-versa) because they need to, to maximize the functionality of their phones.

In the smartphone hardware sector, Google and Samsung are competitors. What kind of relationship do you expect competitors to have.

@dadoes - For me the garbling up of the text is the least of the issue. It’s annoying but yes it’s editable. The worse part is that it locks up my phone. Anywhere from seconds to probably over a minute at a time, during which time not just Safari is locked up, but my whole phone is pretty much rendered useless.

Of course it's editable, but it's a long, tedious process to edit, since the edits foul up as well - and typing on a phone keyboard can be aggravating in the best of circumstances.

Safari = iPhone, yes? I use Firefox on my iPhone, never Safari. I also don’t use the Houzz app. I did this reply on the phone, including copy/paste for the quotes. No lock-ups or erroneous text insertions occurred. I have auto-complete/auto-correct turned off as noted above. Misspelled words are flagged but not auto-corrected.

Yes, iphone. I think its been determined that it has do with the autocorrect and/or predictive text. (I have the same issue on Firefix and Chrome.) So we have a solution, albeit an unsatisfactory one for people like me who prefer it on for literally every other web site and app.
