Design Dilemma dining room Home Decorating

weird ceiling soffit on accent wall

We want to do picture frame moulding and gallery wall on this accent/focal wall in our kitchen and dining room but there is this weird soffit with plumbing on the ceiling, can we incorporate in design with lighting art? Or should we just ignore it and design under it? Thank you!

UNless you want to reroute he plumbing you do inderneath it and BTW IMO you either do picture frame molding or a gallery wall not both BTW I do not love gallery walls they are insulting to good pieces of art and I think family photos are not a good idea in public spaces . I would just a fabulous piece of art a big as possible and be done.

Right on with @Patricia Colwell Consulting. Finding a fantastic large piece of art for that wall will really change your space. Your gallery will look lost here. Gallery walls just are never a good focal point unless they are done with large, well framed pictures.

Personally, I like just the exposed trim style: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bill_lim/3516681112/ or a high direct mount: http://www.customventhoods.com/images/hood13.jpg Obviously, style/shape/material/color will differ depending on your preference. Just remember that the higher you mount the hood, the more overhang you'll want to have and you might need to "over power" it a bit more as well. Google image is your friend... http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=range+hood+pictures&btnG=Search+images&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&start=0 In general, I'm not a huge fan of the "fake" cabinetry over the hood. Plus, it looks like your cabinets don't go all the way to the ceiling so you'll have a bit of exposed duct anyways. Good luck

The cabinet by the fridge in your first to the ceiling layouts is an issue. I see two options: hack an upper cabinet to match width of the lower so that cabinets on both sides of the window are stacked to the ceiling or (my preference) eliminate it totally and shorten the length of the cabinet on the other side of the window so the distance to an upper is the same on each side. I would also consider making a fridge cabinet that my fridge slid into so the cabinet material would encase the fridge on the sink side; that might also need to be a hack (I do not know if a fridge cabinet is an Ikea option). Even without the fridge cabinet, I would pull the cabinet above the fridge forward by installing a lower cabinet above the fridge ( another hack perhaps).

Hi. Nice home! I would 1) Have the crown molding on the cabinets changed, so that the crown reaches the ceiling 2) Have. shelving unit added to right side of the window so that you have an ending point for the tile. Would be a convenient place to have glasses anyway. 3) I'd remove the small backsplash and add a coppery-toned tile. As far as the paint color, it depends on the other elements in your home and your furniture. I don't find the paint color objectionable, but you may want something else?

No one will notice that quirky corner unless you point it out. You have seen it and will never be able to truly ignore that spot however, others will probably never notice. Even if a sharp eyed visitor looks askance at that spot, they won't be judging you. Most every house has an awkward spot somewhere, and stairs are always a challenge. My house has an enclosed stair and one side has a trim piece that is on top of the end while the corresponding piece on the opposite side is underneath the end. I didn't notice until I was trying to figure out how to install a hand rail. Now that the railing is in place, I don't even see the weird offset any more

The soffit isnt weird, lots of homes have them, you are just focusing on it. Hang art on the wall. No one else is noticing it, just saying,and with a nice big piece of art the focus will be on that.

It may look a little more integrated if you connected the ends of it to the walls, if possible, rather than having it hanging just in the middle.

Question for you as we can't see the rest of the space. Is the table/chairs in the correct position? Should the table be horizontal with the wall?

As @palimpsest said, it will look more intentional if it goes wall to wall. Also, it looks like your wall and ceiling paint colors are pretty similar, but if they're different, make sure the soffit is painted the wall color, not the ceiling color (all surfaces). That will help it blend in better. Since it looks like this is your dining room, here are some pictures of what others did with a large empty wall in their dining rooms:
