Long time Lurker-Now I really need advise
Comments (5)I have a 36 inch hood over a 36 inch range and haven't ever had a problem. I think it depends on the way you cook, in part. For example, we grill on the barbecue outside and we don't do "blackened" anything. But we do stir fry. I don't agree that the hood MUST be wider than the cooktop. It's nice if you can do it, but not an absolute requirement. The height of the hood above the countertop is a function of each individual vent. If you already have the vent hood, look at the specs. If you lost them, look at the specs on line. I put mine 34" above; my husband is 5'11" and he is happy with the height. I think you'd be fine with 32" or 33" if the tallest member of your family is 5'8". I think our local code has a maximum of 36", but your particular ventilation hood may say no more than 30". Still, I would personally still take the risk of a small decrease in performance and fudge a couple of inches higher than 30". We went to kitchen design stores and measured the heights of the hoods there to see what height felt good. One thing than apparently helps the draw of the vent is if you start it up before you actually start cooking. I don't really understand your light rail issue. I guess it is because my molding on the bottom of my cabinets is flush with the cabinet edges, so it doesn't intrude into the range space. The specs to your range should specify what the clearances need to be....See MoreI really need your help relocating appliances...or not
Comments (14)You're right lascatx. People work differently in their kitchens. That tiny 16" space between the ref and range is never used. The wall oven and cooktop will replace the range that is there now. So I'm really just trying to decide whether I want it under the cooktop in the same location as the range is now, or if I want to create a refrigerator/wall oven wall (newly constructed cabinetry/built-in) on the same wall that the fridge and range are now. I would then put the induction cooktop about 3" from the sink. I'm trying not to do a total gut, and the cabinet man said matching the shaker cabinets is doable. We are doing a lot in this house, including the master bath with a steam shower, so I'm trying to prioritize. I can live with the cabinets. I love the shaker style. And I need new appliances more than i need soft close drawers. Really, there are four things I cannot live with: 1. The tiny space between the range and the sink 2. The tiled countertops 3. The 1980 coil top electric range 4. The full size fridge The fireplace is to the right of the doorway, next to the fridge. It gets lost in here, but it's a see through, and it gets used in the other room a lot. Ideally the kitchen should be flipped with the family room adjoining it. I think it would function better. But that'll get done when I win the lottery :) Thanks for your input!...See MoreWould it be possible to relocate this Oak tree?
Comments (4)no ... its a decade or so too late ... to get the oak out.. yo will probably kill the CM ... i would carefully cut the oak to ground level ... and apply a stump killer ... or just have them both removed.. and get another CM ... really ... you are probably talking about a 1000 dollar job ... to save a 15 dollar CM ... ken...See Morerelocating kitchen, what to do with old kitchen?
Comments (43)IMO, the chimney would be inside the pantry. Laundry would be in the "north" end of the bath, and the "south" end of it would open into the office/sitting room with just a toilet that has the sink built into the top of the tank connected to plumbing where the tub is. Unless there is room for a combo washer/dryer under a counter, I think the galley would be too small to waste drawer space with laundry when the full bath is right there and plumbed. New plumbing in the galley would be the major investment, but OP was planning for a major plumbing move anyway, so it is probably budgeted....See MoreSherry X
