Comments (79)@Liz Bell summer romance prefers full sun here in the south and they do not burn in all day sun. As long as they get 6 or more hours of sun it does well Mine got afternoon dappled shade after 1 pm from a nearby tree until the sun shifted enough in late afternoon to provide more direct sun. So if your areas can provide at least 6 hours it should be great. Kordes here seem to prefer all day sun compared to Austin’s. Our zones are probably not very different since I am in alabama...See MoreSummer Romance Hedge
Comments (16)Flowers , I can't wait for your roses to bloom. It is a great buy and a steal deal. I would also love to see your white arbor when it blooms. Haha Cori Ann, yours are huge. Comments (13)Oh, Daisy - I LOVE that picture of your steps with the little bunch of daffodils (or are they narcissi/jonquils? Sorry, I don't know the difference!) - on each step. Just stunning! I used to live in the UK and I remember the daffodils everywhere in spring - I especially loved seeing a whole meadow of them, sort of "growing wild" in the local parks (I don't know if they were or probably carefully planted by the park gardeners - haha!). I can also relate to your feelings of wistfulness - I used to live in Oxford and had all those romantic, beautiful Cotswolds English gardens on my doorstep that I never really paid much attention to - and now I live in hot, dry Australia and desperately want an English cottage garden (and am trying to create one, even though everybody local tells me its a lost cause and will only lead to heartache eventually!). Argh! I wish I'd appreciated all those gorgeous gardens I had access to when I was still living in England - can you believe that I never even went to the Chelsea Flower Show? I'm kicking myself now!! :-) ~ HY...See MoreSummer Romance in Alabama
Comments (31)With dry air, watering and mulch protocols are essential for the success of many roses. It does not get drier than Las Vegas among major cities. While gardening there, I "lost" very few roses to heat, but can relate to the shriveled blooms that Diane refers to. The petal substance for many roses are just not ideal for desert conditions or they have to be placed very strategically in the garden. I grew a bed of Heirloom (essentially a staple rose at local nurseries) where the bushes only received 4 hours of morning sun, which actually was enough for multiple bloom cycles. There is sooo much trial and error with rose gardening, and in "some" instances, going against convention when gardening in challenging environments is a way to learn how specific roses will perform. While Cori Ann gardened in a city that could have temperatures in the low triple digits for a decent number of days during the Summer (definitely not the hottest place even among hot cities in CA), if I recall correctly, her temperatures often cooled significantly at night. Places like Las Vegas, Palm Desert, Phoenix, can be near if not in the triple digit temperatures overnight. She also had great soil, to begin with versus the nutrient void, caliche riddled soil that plagues many desert areas. These factors make a difference… Today, I was trying to determine placement for my Falstaff and viewed Cori Ann's posts of her beautiful garden:)...See MoreDiane Brakefield
