Kordes Parfuma-First Crush on sale. And other rose ramblings....
Comments (17)@ebharvey and noseometer..sorry to hear that, our box stores were just like that too. This is the first year, I saw a kordes there. But Walmart here carries a huge variety, you've got to get to them early spring. I got a lot of them from there, regular star performers in my no spray garden: queen elizabeth, Tiffany, Sunsprite, abe lincoln, Don Juan, Rio Samba(l think, lost the label..) and more recent addition which has been flowering non stop(I just planted these about two months ago) Heirloom, Angel and St Joseph's coat. I have to say St. Joseph Coat is delightful, striking colors and always flowering(spiky thorns). I do like to revive plants needing TLC. I digress, my point is you never know what you may find in these stores..it's fun to find an unusual rose.:)...See MoreFirst crush question
Comments (15)Seems to be a few different ideas here.. and I would have just blamed it on the rose itself , but this morning I noticed my lavender lassie has it too! How odd?! I've never seen this on my roses before. Summer romance looks normal right now . cori Ann , your roses look fantastic there!! So glad you found roses to do well in a tough area ! Dave , it just hasn't been cool here ? It's definitely summer and hot . Maybe I missed a cooler night or two . As long as it's not a permanent disaster in my garden I'll be fine :) mindy - I'd love to see photos of Dixieland Linda! Noseometer , how long did you give it before kicking it out ? I agree judy , when the blooms are perfect it is wow !! Wish I had gotten a pic when I had a good branch open but I forgot to Kristine , I cannot stand even the thought of earwigs !!! When I was a child , my grandparents had a camper in a country campground. A kid there told me earwigs crawled in your ears to lay eggs and needless to say, I could not sleep well there after that bc those bugs popped up a lot . My poor grandma had to do an earwig checkbefore bed and I begged for cotton balls for my ears ! I've heard dahlias attract them and it's always given me the heebie jeebies thinking of them. ewwwwww...See MoreA first: kordes.us has rated this rose its MOST disease resistant
Comments (17)Agreed. As to the scoring, it really isn't anything new, it is just a lamer system since the combined health scores are used. While I would not be surprised if this were a copy writer's error (excellent, exceptional... Whatever...) it appears the 8 stars (combined scores for BS and mildew) earns the "exceptional" rating. There are a number of roses on the Kordes.us site that do not have *any* "rating" included, one or two of which might theoretically earn the "exceptional" assuming that references an 8-star BS + mildew rating. I definitely miss the NewFlora system, adapted from Kordes in Germany. I also note that some of NewFlora's offerings don't appear to be on the new Kordes.us site, so they may be reducing the number of offerings. That would be very unfortunate as the Kordes line brought a lot of very healthy roses into our market. Does anyone know if Chris, formerly of Newflora, is still involved with the evaluations and distribution of Kordes.us? Does she still frequent this forum?...See MoreSummer Romance in Alabama
Comments (31)With dry air, watering and mulch protocols are essential for the success of many roses. It does not get drier than Las Vegas among major cities. While gardening there, I "lost" very few roses to heat, but can relate to the shriveled blooms that Diane refers to. The petal substance for many roses are just not ideal for desert conditions or they have to be placed very strategically in the garden. I grew a bed of Heirloom (essentially a staple rose at local nurseries) where the bushes only received 4 hours of morning sun, which actually was enough for multiple bloom cycles. There is sooo much trial and error with rose gardening, and in "some" instances, going against convention when gardening in challenging environments is a way to learn how specific roses will perform. While Cori Ann gardened in a city that could have temperatures in the low triple digits for a decent number of days during the Summer (definitely not the hottest place even among hot cities in CA), if I recall correctly, her temperatures often cooled significantly at night. Places like Las Vegas, Palm Desert, Phoenix, can be near if not in the triple digit temperatures overnight. She also had great soil, to begin with versus the nutrient void, caliche riddled soil that plagues many desert areas. These factors make a difference… Today, I was trying to determine placement for my Falstaff and viewed Cori Ann's posts of her beautiful garden:)...See MoreCori Ann - H0uzz violated my privacy
