ISO Advice about Growing Seedlings in Nursery Bed
Comments (8)Hi: Hearing from you all is like a reunion! Thank you!! Sherry, planting and caring for that many seedlings just about did me in last summer. One thing helped - Pete put an underground water delivery system in the field. It runs about 600 ft with several faucets and hoses spaced about 75' apart. That made it easier to water during the drought. Still ... In January, I accepted a new job (in addition to the usual ones) that took ALL my time this spring. I expect the crunch to ease as I get used to it. I don't want to stop planting but need a Plan B if/when life gets crazy again. +om: thanks for the encouragement and advice. I don't plan to hold them over long. In general, they will be seedlings ordered in spring that I'll plant in early winter after they go dormant. lkz5ia - thanks for the photo! 500 NS seedlings - WOW! What you describe and show in the photo is exactly what I want to do. I found a great source of healthy seedlings, more diversity than state nurseries. Like you, I want to be able to hold some over. John: I'm happy with the reforestation project. Some black locust seedlings are 10-12' tall after one year (others are 4'). The forester says my survival rate is as good or better than theirs. This year, my goal was to increase diversity so I planted shade tolerant trees, like sugar maples, and wildlife shrubs and trees. Added Burr and Shumard oaks, tupelos (black gum), red mulberries, more dogwoods, more longleaf pines. I'm planning a veg/herb/cutting garden, can put seedling nursery bed(s) in the same area for protection. Thanks to you all, I learn something new every day. Many thanks for the encouragement and advice. Pam...See Moreadvice on adjusting
Comments (20)Thanks to everyone and their advice. Mom of 4, I think your ideas and advice were really excellent. Well have to try to put it into practice. When I say temper tantrums I mean refusing to move, screaming (not crying) so loud I can hear it inside when all the windows are closed, and yelling at the top of their voice that Dads hurting them when he tries to get them to sit down or going inside to calm down. I know people always say, "Youll never know until you have kids" but sometimes you just know when behavior is not normal or unacceptable. Plasticgarden, I think youre absolutely right about the "Disneyland Dad" thing. Weve talked about this before and he does acknowledge the he does overcompensate when he does see them. Hes said that he doesnt want to "neglect" them. I tried explaining that theres a long ways between neglect and instilling independence. I think weve figured out whats going on, now we just have to try to figure out how to correct it. But, Im feeling much less crazy than I did a day or so ago. I really want to stress Im not expecting them to act perfect all the time, but I think theres a threshold of acceptable behavior that they havent quite reached (through no fault of the kids). As for the French (which seems to be a main issue now): I can have conversations in French. I can buy bread, and go to the store and the doctorss and have lunch alone with his parents. I just dont feel confident in sitting down with two young boys and having such a delicate discussion. But, maybe Dad can be used for his commendable translation skills here. : ) Anyway. Thanks for all the advice, the confirmation that Im not completely crazy, and the honest opinions that I might have to be a bit more accepting sometimes....See MoreNeed advice about next project -bed platform
Comments (4)Let me rephrase my question - I know I tend to blab on too much and the question gets lost. I want to use my vintage 2 x12 planks to build a bed platform (boards 6 ft long -running lengthwise)- what suggestions do y all have for how exactly to construct a base or support or frame or some sort of brace underneath these boards so as to hold them straightavoid any possible sagging or unevenness of the boards. Even a one inch warp or sag is too much. They were used in a previous bed frame that had four legs and just a couple 2x4s across and theres a definite sag. Dont want any measurable sag. Thnx....See MoreAdjusting or Dormancy? Watering advice, please?
Comments (14)Rick, Neem works for anything that crawls--it basically smothers them to death, pretty much the same way that soap alone can, except they die faster because the neem solution is--well, heavy! Pests have a harder time swimming through it because it is more viscous and get poisoned as they do. It's pretty gruesome. Although there are debates as to how much plants absorb neem through the roots, my readings showed they do get absorbed, they just don't know if that makes plants unpalatable to pests. In really really early planthopper tests, they've been successful at limiting the damage on crops. For scale--the hard-shelled ones that cling to plants---I found only a flame thrower settles the matter permanently. As for Bt, it eats anything that lays eggs in the soil/substrate. That includes fungus gnats, fruit flies, silverfish, thrips, mites, etc. Outdoors, though, I use nematodes and milk spores. Pagan P.S. Thanks for clearing that up, re: root stimulator. I'm going to water my new shrub today with it....See MoreTina Marie
