Help with Earth Angel
Comments (8)If you had extreme heat AND windy conditions, that's a double whammy. And if the ground hadn't been watered extremely well during the heat, that makes for hosta crispies. Granted, I'm in MInnesota, but I have a whole part of my garden that is adjusting well to full sun conditions (dawn till 3pm) It gets watered well, but the hostas have grown HUGE! I recommend dealing with the crispies this year, and see what happens next year. If you're going to do any moving, I recommend in the early part of the season when you're dealing with 1-2" pips sticking out. Then you can see what you're working with and minimize the leaf damage.... and they'll still leaf out nicely. Good luck!...See MoreEarth Angel rose
Comments (89)Update on 'Earth Angel' & 'Madame Anisette' for this year-2017 both roses did extremely well in terms of disease resistance. 'Earth Angel' has bloomed several times this summer and 'Madame Anisette' bloomed twice for me. I moved 'Madame Anisette' to my rose garden from the chimney. It never really went dormant in front of the chimney. I moved it in April and just this week moved it to another spot in this rose garden so it could be seen better (on the border edge corner.). 'Earth Angel' looks very good and healthy -- a smallish shrub about 3' X 3'. Next spring it needs to be moved away from a 'Pat Austin' as it might start encroaching on it, 'Madame Anisette' is about 5' tall and 2' wide....See MoreMadame Anisette and Earth Angel
Comments (20)I recently spoke to K&M roses and he said they got a call from Kordes stating that Earth Angel (and some of the other newly released Kordes roses) were found to have gone vegetative (meaning lots of green growth but not blooms) when grafted onto fortuniana and that he should cease to sell them grafted because of this. I have had this problem with Kordes rose before in my hot South Florida garden. They either go vegetative, or they take years to get going (except for the veranda series, those guys love my garden and bloom like mad). They also tend to form bullheaded flowers in the hot summer which is such a shame as they are one of the few really disease resistant roses that grow and grow in my climate. But dang! No blooms. The ones I've had the most difficulty with were Lion's Fairy Tale, Elegant Fairy Tale (this one finally started blooming after 4 years in the garden, but does produce bullheaded roses in the summer) and Summer Romance. I had the same problem with First Crush that was planted in the ground, but the one in the container did bloom a bit (alas, bullheads all summer long and suffers from tons of die back). I would try growing it own root and see how it does and give it some time because as I said, some just take a while to get going. I'm so sad I have problems with my Kordes roses because I really like them. I just wish they did better in the heat. I'm going to try out some of their Sunbelt series as I was told by Chris, those were bred for the hot south. Savannah is on that list and its on my list as well....See MoreWhat’s wrong with my Earth Angel(s)
Comments (21)I think this is could possibly be a magnesium deficiency. My source is "Compendium of Rose Diseases (1983) APS Press. I also wonder if this is not last years leaves getting ready to drop since the Florida growing season probably is not cold enough to make a rose drop all of its foliage in the winter. The new growth looks healthy and vigorous with no signs of distress. Even here in Oregon I see those kind of old leaves in spring on the hardiest roses which did not drop foliage I doubt it to be RMV. All own root roses of this variety sold through 2017 originated from virus indexed mother block from Germany and all own root propagation was from the original stock. No licensed producer used cuttings from budded roses; so while it is impossible to say it does not have RMV, it is unlikely. If you bought the rose locally in Florida it was grown in fields in in Arizona where there is RMV, but it is usually passed on through the root stocks and from infected grafting materials. It typically does not spread to the own root roses unless cuttings were taken from infected plants - from budded plants. I would watch the plants and see if any more mature foliage develops these symptoms, if so, I would think about adding some micro elements to the fertilizer. My guess is these leaves will drop and your rose will look great. Looks like you have a lot of buds coming....See Moredianela7analabama
