Thanks jbfoodie, my wife and I feel blessed to garden on this property. We live across the river from a benedictine abbey that dates back to the early 1900's and share in the beautiful sounds of their bells throughout the day. It is literally hard for me to leave to go to work! Oath5, here is another shot of the swamp rose. As it gets bigger, it tends to cascade down which is a neat affect on the water. I want to plant more on the opposite shoreline from the house to have that brief but amazing color. Clint

Abnorm, are those the same banana spiders that were found in a box of bananas in England? Maybe you are joking? I really am not sure. Lekle, I will try to recreate what you mentioned, but I am not sure how. Crenda, that would be great to re-create that. I have seen that on "swamp people" many times. I have about 3 ft across X 2-1/2 long area, on top of this small side-table to make this habitat. As far as raccoons, oppossums, and dragonflies. The coonies, and possums show up here in Pa. I was trying to show the critters that were more prolific down south, we have dragonflies here also.

I do have that rose (although I'm not sure that it isn't the repeat blooming R. virginiana). It does repeat well. Mine now lives on a dry clay knoll and survived last year (it's that good.) Can it handle continuously wet roots? I don't know. I do think I know the plant came from Louisiana (which argues for it being palustris) because the natural range of viginiana ends on the East Coast north of Virginia and doesn't reach VA at all. But was it traded? Very possibly. It is a good rose for a cottage garden or a wild looking expanse.
