Help with Earth Angel

During Hurricane Sandy I lost a big old oak in my backyard. My neighbor lost a smaller one that gave me some good shade. They both blocked mid day to afternoon sun. The good news is they missed the house and didn't do to much damage to the beds. The bad news is I lost shade and my backyard fence. The fence was easy to replace, the shade is another story.
I've been making what ajustments I can. Some good growers were starting to fry. They were smaller and I managed to find them shade (I'm still learning which ones take more direct sun.)

What should I do? We have only had a few really hot days and it is getting totally crisp already. I water well and often. I've never attempted moving anything this size.
If I have to get it out of the current location I will. I don't want to lose it!

You won't lose it. It may burn this year due to the difference in sun exposure. But it needs a season to adjust to its new situation. Make sure it is watered well this year with plenty of supplemental water, especially during the hot summer months. Then check and see what it looks like next year. You likely won't lose a year's growth. If it continues to burn after this summer then you should consider moving it, or planting a small tree to provide some shade.

Some growers even put their hostas in full sun to get them to thrive. They look like s**t, (fried leaves) but their roots do well. Steve is giving you some very good advice, IMHO. A sudden change in sunlight will burn a hosta, but the leaves are still "working" for the plant. Take care of the roots (water) and it will adjust as best it can. Relax, you do have a lot of time (like a year) to decide if you need to move this one or not. You won't lose the hosta. ;-)

Yes KS I agree, it's been a month since I've done the bayer disease control, as it was treated once at the beginning of the season, and the Epsom salts haven't been given for two weeks. The 1 tbsp per gallon wasn't given to just the EA plant; the gallon was spread between 8 potted roses as a foliar feed. Is that too high for a foliar spray anyway? Should one only use a teaspoon for a foliar spray? Just curious if that may have been too high a formula for a foliar spray? I haven't done much to my Heirloom roses since their instructions say to let it be. I was certainly suspecting the rain, or wondering if it actually needed something since it's pretty much been left alone besides the epsom salt. I will say we had 90 degree weather in May which is unusual and then went to cool 60's and constant rain. Very irregular weather. Thanks for your help as I agree with letting it be for now. The yellow leaves are spreading throughout the bush today and hopefully when it stops raining it will get better. I think I may block the rain from the bush in an effort to ease its maladies sooner. I do have two EA's potted up and they have both been treated the same way. The other one does not have any issues though even with the rain, so it's definitely a mystery to me.

Towandazz that certainly looks like EA. If it isn't, I'd be surprised. I absolutely love that test garden. I would hike up the back way with my 4 year old son from the busy downtown Portland street of Burnside. I would climb the mile high stone stairs through the woods for exercise a couple years back. The stairs were insane, but reminded me of some old tibetan stairs to a buddhist temple or something, and then the truck through the trails, to then finally arrive at the test garden at the break of dawn. I did it everyday at around 6:00 am when there was no public or visitors yet. The only ones there were a few workers tending the roses. It was very peaceful eating breakfast up there by ourselves. I am sad they wanted to tear those stairs down, but I only assume the rich people up there probably don't want the homeless having access to their streets so easily. I wonder if they are still there today? I don't know that many people know about them except for city dwellers lol! I will check when I visit on my birthday, because my husband is taking us up there. Thanks Dave! I hope they bloom too. Both bushes seem very small though and both were ordered from Heirloom Roses. I have a feeling there may be none this year. The canes aren't even thick as pencils yet. I wonder if I got two small specimens from them. Even so, I will be patient because I love those roses!

I cant say enough good things about Peach Swirl. I also love taking photos of her. She is so changeable. Her colors start out vibrant but I love when the blooms fade after a few days and slowly meld into pinks then peaches. I am not crazy about stripey roses in general but Peach Swirl and Raspberry Cream Twirl changed that lol. Maybe its the food names? Nah, they are both just extraordinary ;) The little tree frogs here adore Peach Swirl. Insects are attracted to the sweet scent and she is a perfect fluffy hiding place. More people should be growing Peach Swirl! Opening Starting to turn more pink The Melded colors ~Swirling~ Yummy Pinks Corals & Peaches Even her old faded blooms are beautiful and get fluffier & fluffier. Froggy Heaven Check out the large Peach Swirl bloom compared to this grapefruit (the faded pinkish one straight down) then there is another smaller bud just to the right that is more yellow and pink striped on the upper rt corner of the plate.

I think part of it was because of the extreme heat we had last week, I had some of my hosta leaves melted that way too which never happend to me, the thermometer down the street was showing 101 degree on Sat.. And just a few days earlier it was in the 50's.

In one area of my yard I had maples removed, now I miss the shade there. So I use screens of 3x3 ft burlap stapled to 5ft long 1/2x1 inch wooden poles. It shades about 50%. You might want to use 3 poles. In my case I only need it against noon sun. You can get that burlap and wood in the garden section at places like Home Depot and make yourself a fast screen to save your 'Earth Angel'. You have to sharpen the poles and hammer them into the ground. Bernd

If you had extreme heat AND windy conditions, that's a double whammy. And if the ground hadn't been watered extremely well during the heat, that makes for hosta crispies.

Granted, I'm in MInnesota, but I have a whole part of my garden that is adjusting well to full sun conditions (dawn till 3pm) It gets watered well, but the hostas have grown HUGE!

I recommend dealing with the crispies this year, and see what happens next year.

If you're going to do any moving, I recommend in the early part of the season when you're dealing with 1-2" pips sticking out. Then you can see what you're working with and minimize the leaf damage.... and they'll still leaf out nicely.
