Pretty petals and Patty W - Madame Anisette
Comments (23)Yeah! Finally!!! I came back after almost two weeks away (I hate United Airlines, delays for days with no reimbursement), and was rewarded with four beautiful flowers on one of my Summer Romances. They are so much prettier and more fragranced than those from Lowe's. Mine were from Chamblees. It took over four months, but was worth it and I can see it will continue. I actually just put it in the ground two weeks ago with only one bud. The other one that was damaged in shipping is still a comparative runt, but definitely improved. They both send out longish canes and aren't bushy at all. I wonder if I can pinch this growth to encourage bushiness or not. Do you experts do this with roses? Fire Opal has been a blooming dear since the get-go and is a great plant. All the lit says no fragrance, but it has a definite apple scent when freshly opened. The two Dark Desires I bought two week ago from Lowe's have continued budding and blooming. I agree they all must just take some time before thinking of reproduction. (On the other hand, my little Margo Koster which has been two tiny sticks for months, suddenly started leafing out and immediately set buds. I pluck them off everyday, but missed doing so while away. I'll soon have about six tiny flowers.)...See MoreTell me about your healthiest, most disease resistant roses!
Comments (47)Oh no SoFl, I bought Sugar Moon on your recommendation and from smelling it in your garden..... I tried it and I liked it so much that I bought another one. Both of them are staying healthy. I really don't understand why some of the ones that do well here don't necessary do well for you and vice versa.... Maybe it is my salt air or something. I think you said you got rid of Regatta, IT is probably one of my best performers. However, I thought I killed it. Someone told me we should cut back to a third, I think I must have misunderstood and it was to be cut back only a third. For the longest time it was touch and go but it pulled through. Even in this heat it is looking good, no chilli thrips. When it blooms it blooms!!! Another one that I have that is healthy (from disease) is Outta the Blue. However, it does get spider mites If I keep washing it off it is also a big bloomer for me. I also have Dark Desire that is happy - no disease or insects. However, it is super super thorny and not a favorite in the garden. Believe it or not it is an own root . I do love the flowers in a vase if I feel like being attacked by her. I always feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the apple tree scene. Another one that I would claim that is pretty happy here in Florida is Distant Drums. She too is an own root. I figure it they do own root well here in Florida, it must be a toughie....See MoreWhat rose do you have that you thought was a dud
Comments (19)How long do you want to go back on this one? I got Old Blush in the late 1990's ('98? '99?) It was planted in the driveway bed which, at the time, was the only spot I had for roses, or flowers of any kind. It was the first to blackspot, shed its leaves and just sit there the rest of the season. It sent up about one new cane a year, just to stay alive and the few blooms were modest, at best. It was nearly dead when I moved it to an east-facing bed behind our house last year as an experiment. It is still small but growing for the first time. No blackspot, even though pressure has been moderately high this year. It is rarely out of bloom. Even the blooms are prettier. Who knew??? A more recent one is Smiling Jean. I got this one 2 yrs. ago because it was supposed to be disease resistant, nearly thornless, and could take some shade. I had a spot for a rose like that and liked the bright coral blooms. While still in its pot, it promptly blackspotted and lost its leaves. The one bloom was pepto pink and it sent up one new cane, well armed with thorns. That fall I planted it where I had intended, hoping for better. The next year it became a one cane (with thorns) wonder, with an occasional pepto-pink bloom. I had to move a rose because it outgrew its spot by the path and put this one in its place. This year it's a different rose. It's growing well and no longer a one-cane wonder. No blackspot and rarely out of bloom, now truly coral pink. Still thorny- hopefully it won't get too big to be by the path!...See MoreMadame Anisette is so glorious
Comments (74)Dianela, Wow, just amazingly beautiful! MA is huge! I love her with Buff Beauty so much♡ BB is on my list for 2023. I was watching a You Tube video where they were showing closeups of Summer Romance and MA next to each other like you have yours. The colors really compliment each other. I bet your yard smells just wonderful when they are all blooming! MA does sound like Summer Romance: Huge, disease resistant and thorny! I am not that worried about size or thorns because I have space and am just now getting my beds in so can space them out. On our farm its better to have larger plants due to the chickens causing havoc. Plus, if the goats get out then they might not have a chance to eat them all before I catch them haha. I found out after the move that Summer Romance goes crazy with blooms after a good military hair cut lol. I think a lot of these Kordes are just wild beasts in warm humid climates....See Moresuebelle_neworleans
