Seasider, Diane lives in a magical place where everything is gynormous. Im not sure how she grows Julia child that is so huge. My sister and I both grow Julia. Her Julia is a standard and maybe 4ft my 2 at 7 years old are less than 4ft .

Not sure about Yves but I have been looking into that one as well and looks to be around 3ft.

I agree about Diane's roses, they really are in a league of their own ! 

  If JC can stay small and container-friendly, I might keep her and send YP to my boyfriend's garden. I also think JC's heat tolerance might be better, so if she can be kept short, she might have a better chance at survival here.

Oh, you guys. I guess that means I can't show any JC pics. Seaside, I have a third own root Julia that is a reasonable size, so you might try own root if you can find it, but mine doesn't bloom as much, and the blooms are a little smaller than the big grafted plants' blooms. Diane

The JC I ordered is grafted. Own root roses, especially modern roses, are very very hard to find in Europe. Everything is on Laxa rootstock, basically.

In fact I would be especially interested in any pics of her blooms at the hottest time of year for you. I've been reading the comments on HMF and some posters were complaining about the bloom color fading too much. I don't mind some fading, I guess it's unavoidable with very high UV and heat. Just curious about how her blooms are for you in peak summer heat.

Though Julia blooms all summer and usually is the last to freeze in November, I had a hard time with finding summer pics. But here are a few. We have very hot summers, and last summer was an all time heat record breaker that continued through the first week of November, when it suddenly became a cold November, the coldest since 2002. I hope I have some roses alive after all this. Diane

Hi Seaside! In my sunny inland Southern CA garden, I have two Julia Childs—one own root that’s 2.5’x2.5’ and one on Dr. Huey that’s 4’x4’. I’ve only had them for about 3 years, and the own-root will be 4’x4’ and the Dr. Huey will be 8’x8’ if they follow Diane’s magical rules! Like Diane, my own-root blooms are a bit smaller than those on the grafted plant. The fragrance of the own root is sweeter, and the grafted is more “anise-y.” They probably have an equal number of blooms and an equally quick (and amazingly quick) repeat. Heat tolerance is second to none: I’ve seen jt blooming away in my garden during a 114 degree heatwave without a single petal wilting. IMHO, it’s a perfect rose with an ideal habit. Even grafted, I doubt it would attempt to grow to 8’x8’ in a pot (and kind of hope it doesn’t attempt this feat in my garden)!

I don’t personally grow Yves Piaget, but I think it’s taller and lankier than Julia, and I’ve heard those luscious blooms don’t love super high heat. They sure are beautiful, though!

Here are my two Julias. The first photo is grafted Julia Child in June, and the second is own-root Julia Child in May.

I've grown Yves Piaget for >15 years, as both grafted on Huey and own-root, and it stays around 3' for me. Its stems are far from lanky... they are quite thick, although it does have a slightly weird growth habit. I've grown Julia Child for ~5 years or so (grafted), and it also stays ~3' for me. But I do prune well in the winter, because I don't want my roses to get >5' tall. I grow most of mine in 15 gallon pots permanently. Both bloom extremely well. I don't get screaming hot temps in the summer usually, but there is the occasional 106 from time to time! Two of my top favorite roses :-D

Diane, I'm amazed at how well yours held her color in the heat. That golden glow from the center is gorgeous!

Desertrose, those bush shots are wonderful to see! Her foliage is flawless, no sign of frying at all! Your pics show the fading that I guess people were complaining about on HMF but honestly I don't see it as a flaw, it looks very pretty with all the different shades of yellow together. What a bloomer!

Susan, I'm especially glad to read your review since you grow yours in pots too. Good to know that YP is a good bloomer for you, since bloom frequency was one of the concerns with him. So they both can be kept short... Darn it now I can't decide!!

I will let them both soak for the weekend while I make up my mind about which one goes where.

Seaside. I'm glad our photos helped. I don't find Julia fades in the sun much, though in the fall, her tones can darken some. Usually pale blooms are just spent, anyway, and ready to go. For me, Julia is tough in sun and cold. In your mild "winter", I'll bet you get some beautiful color from Julia. Good luck with your rose. Diane

In 2016, we had an especially late onset of killing frost, and Julia was the last rose standing the first wee of December. We have early frost dates normally. Here's a pic I've shown too many times, but I get a kick out of it. Note the amber color.

Diane those blooms have such wonderful color!! If the fading is just from blooms aging then I really don't mind.

Desertrose I agree, it's so nice when the clusters shows a range of different shades!

I've made up my mind and will keep JC on the roof. Getting her was a big deal for me! Over here she is much more difficult to find than YP, he is easy to get from Meilland and many other sellers, being such a classic florist rose. The Carruth roses, on the other hand, are few and far between in Europe, so JC feels all the more precious to me.

I added bare-root Angele Pernet last month, she's a small HT from almost 100 years ago with more orangey Pernetiana shades that I am told tend to fade quite fast, so it will be interesting to see how their both of their colors evolve. I think she and Julia Child will look nice together!
