If Julia is wonderfully healthy and blooms constantly, what has she done to lose your admiration?

A small, soft-colored, old rose that is heat-tolerant and blooms generously? Marie Daly fits the description, including fragrance. Maybe a china--Hermosa or Archduke Charles? Perhaps Mrs. Dudley Cross, who's considerably more compact than most teas?

Ingrid, if Julia is a bloom machine and healthy, maybe you ought to wait just a little bit before moving her. A lot of roses are never the same once moved. I've gone through mood swings with roses and either attempted to move, or removed them. Many, many times I have regretted it later on. If you still feel the same way after waiting a bit, then by all means try and move her.

Perhaps you are finding the pale pink and the yellow together somewhat boring? If so, maybe a perennial will make them both "pop". I am just now starting to plant some perennial native wildflowers near my roses. I am still very much in the baby stages of doing this. I am astounded with how much these other flowers are accenting certain roses. Today I planted some yellow and lavender wildflowers near a newly planted Grandmom Schmidt (the pink version of Smith's Parish). I couldn't believe how much prettier it looked.

How wide a space do you have? Give us dimensions, since we're not necessarily familiar with Julia Childs.

I'm not sure why I bought this rose, probably eagerness to fill a lot of empty space and because I like yellow roses, but my real love is old roses and this rose just looks too modern to make me happy. Cass, I have a space of about 4 x 4 feet to work with.

Maybe perle d'or would be a rose for that spot. I think it's the right size. Mine are in morning sun, so take my comments with a grain of salt, if yours will be in full sun all day - but it opens apricot and pales to a pink. It might blend with the white/pink you have and play off a little more subtly with the burgunday ib. It is a constant bloomer as well.

Just a thought.

Carla, if blackspot is common issue around there, you might think twice about ordering Julia Child sometime in the future. I put her in last spring and she is a blackspot magnet here.

She seems to love California though.

Hermosa blooms a lot for me stays about 4 ft by 3 wide Sophie's perpetual is another nice compact rose Madame Dore

Comte de Chambord is about like JC in my yard, perhaps a little taller. Lovely lovely fragrance, good repeat. Also surprisingly clean.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Unfortunately, Perle d'Or gets much too large here. I've had this rose before and in two years it was more than 5 x 5 feet. I was actually hoping for an old yellow rose, but there really aren't that many, especially smaller ones. I've thought about Etoile de Lyon and Perle des Jardins but don't know how well they bloom. They don't seem to get mentioned much on the forum, which is usually not a good sign. I'm going to give this further thought and hopefully will come up with the perfect rose.

Ingrid, I was on a hunt for yellow teas earlier this year and bought two Etoile de Lyon this spring because of Jerome and a few others who made comments about it on a thread I found - it did very well for him, I remember his saying.

Mine are doing well, purchased from ARE this spring. The one bloom I've gotten so far has been more of a cream than a yellow, but it's really too early to tell. I wonder if they aren't going to be bs prone, but that should not be a problem for you.

I am sorry I cannot tell you any more than this about Etoile first hand.
