Julia Child/yellow blooms/black spot
Comments (9)Elina/Peaudouce is very robust in Illinois---I've seen huge specimens of it growing in several gardens I've visited north of I-80. It's healthy & hardy. Don't believe the HMF classification of 7b; I believe 5 is more appropriate. That being said, it may not be exactly what you're looking for. It's not the glamour gal that Julia Child is. Elina is a very subdued yellow and whenever I've seen it, I'd call it more "off-white". I grow St Patrick instead, which I've heard can be a stretch for my zone, but it's doing fine. What do other folks think about that rose if she's going to overwinter it in a garage? If bright yellow & double form are the criteria, it fits.....but it's not as strongly scented as Elina....See MoreOwn root Floribundas, Grandifloras & Hybrid Teas?
Comments (25)Well, considering how much a fan of own-root roses here in my cold zone, this was an eye-opening exercise. I went through my entire alphabetical list of 800 or so roses, a majority of which are flori/HT/grandiflora roses, and noted any that I considered excellent on own roots. It turns out a lot of outstanding bloomers that I vaguely had considered floris or HTs were actually shrubs, and many of my best HTs were in fact grafted. Dang. I have a bad survival rate with bare root roses, but it looks like I should be cautious with the HT own root roses on a second round. My impression was that the floribundas weren't particularly bothered by being own root and very few of mine were grafted, but by far my best bloomers among the HTs tended to be the grafted ones. Who knew?? Here's my list of the definite prolific or otherwise robust roses in these categories: Floribunda: - prolific Bolero Floral Fairy Tale LavaGlut Mandarin Ice Grand Duc Henri Occhi di Fata Pinocchio Suni Louisa Stone/Guinevere Pillow Talk Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Impatient Roman Holiday Alice Pat Champagne Moment Bad Worishofen/Pink Emely Eutin Hot Cocoa HTs Beverly Francis Dubreuil Cubana Comtesse de Segur Dames de Chenonceau Acropolis Aloha Headliner Nigrette (no worse than it would do grafted) Papageno Lafter Maid of Honor Spiced Coffee Golden Buddha Birthday Girl Grandif " Paloma Blanca Paw Maw Lagerfeld Earth Song (extremely well) Mother of Pearl I ended up needing an honorable mention for the HTs, with roses that are robust and vigorous growers, but not terribly prolific or frequent rebloomers. I figure that can be true of any of the HTs and it wouldn't depend on them grafted or not, so for what it's worth here are the good HTs on own roots, for me: Peggy Rockefeller Karl Herbst Intermezzo (surprisingly hardy for a lavender Dot rose) Neptune Henri Matisse Careless Love Charlotte Brownell Harry G Hastings Madame Delbard Break oâÂÂDay Sophisticate I agree that Double Delight is a very weak grower under any circumstances, but virtually microscopic if own root (and I've tried several times). It refuses to die before lingering several years, but never thrives own root. Cynthia...See More'Julia Child'... and I'm an idiot...
Comments (19)Well, Marlorena, I hope you enjoy your Julia, aka Ab Fab (a terrible name, I agree), and share a few photos with us in the future. I love that rose and don't care if everyone in the world owns one (or two). Rarity doesn't necessarily mean something is excellent. Currently I'm in love with Roberto (Roberto Capucci), which makes it sound like I'm having an affair with a sexy young Italian (at my age, no less). I don't have Roberto yet, but I'm going to acquire him this spring, I hope. Heheh. SoFlo, your many Dames sound like my Princess Alexandra of Kent, a rose of many faces and colors. Just like Dames, she can be salmon pink, or a cooler pink, and even a bright coral when it's hottest. Sometimes blooms are large, but when it's hot they are smaller with fewer leaves, and stamens that often show. Currently she is reverting to her spring beauty because the heat is moderating. But at different times in the growing season, one might think she's an entirely different rose than at another point in the season. Diane...See MoreShow/tell about your good floribundas
Comments (34)Lots of lovely floribundas here! I don't have many, but here is an excellent floribunda nearly always in bloom and very BS resistant. Easter Basket. It's only drawback is that it doesn't always sport that lovely pink blush. These next two floribundas were shown above, but they are the only other floribundas I have to show off. Eutin--have 3 of this one. Reliable, dependable, good BS resistance, slow on re-bloom but when it blooms, it's a prettier rose red than any Knock Out every dreamed of producing! (It was kind of the KO of the 1960s.) Love Song--I adore this one! Sara, I'm glad Our Lady of Guadalupe is doing so well for you. I really miss mine. Kate...See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W.
