I would say if the canes are still green then just wait it out. We had a bad winter and spring out here in BC and my Gertrude Jeckyll was very slow to get going. All my other roses were out a few weeks ahead of GJ. But now she is starting to go and hopefully will soon catch up.

YP is always slow in spring in my yard, and I'm in zone 9. When there is green there is hope.

It's cool to see some of Vernon Rickard's roses on this list...Erin Alonso and Robin Alonso. His Rachel is on my best list...a beautiful miniflora, deep pink, fragrant, many petals, very good bloomer, good growth. Erin Alonso is also a great bloomer for me. 2007 was such a challenging year for gardening but all the same I had some good performers. Cherry Parfait is usually a great one here but sulked in the drought. Other good ones for 07: Monsieur Tillier Comtesse du Cayla Lavaglut Angel's Camp Tea Altissimo kept it up this year Tipsy Imperial Concubine Queen Nefertiti in a pot but always blooming Midnight Blue " " Comtesse de Provence or Liv Tyler Madame Lombard Cramoisi Superieur SDLM &SDML Rouge Clotilde Soupert Abe Darby Carefree Beauty Country Dancer Felicia Marie Pavie St. Cecilia Maggie La Sevillana Lady Hillingdon OLD BLUSH the best ANisley Dickson very good bloomer Sally HOlmes The Fairy Bonica La Marne Betty Boop Quietness Frederick Mistral Those were the best out of 300. Sam: That's the best bush-shot of Alnwick rose. so many blooms. How do you like the scent? I'm going keep my eyes opened for outdoor-wood-burner at Craig's list. My neighbor has a small open one (a circular one with feet) which he got at garage sale, and he got lots of wood-ash from that small fire-pit. But that has to be stored inside a garage, 2 neighbors had to trash their metal-fire-pits, since they got rusty in the rain. There's a picnic area with a public fireplace nearby, will have to check if there's wood ash inside that fireplace. We go past that park when I go to the Spice House to get spices. I've just spent 1 hour drilling hundreds of holes on my plastic pots ... roots need air to grow big. Can't find the fast-draining pine-based potting soil, so I just have to cope with slower-draining MG-moisture control (sold cheap at Sam's club $!1 for a HUGE BAG twice the size at Walmart). Jude the Obscure is an old favorite, 2 own-root Jude died on my zone 5a winter, so I try 2 more own-roots this year, but will winterize them inside my garage ... I'm addicted to Jude's scent. The pink ones are Annie L. McDowell rose (thornless):

ann beck 8a ruralish WA How does your soil look like, being high in iron? The top layer of my soil is black and rock hard clay, but the lowest layer is lighter color clay (orangish), and red roses do well here. Red roses like Double Delight & Munstead Wood both have a higher need for iron. I check the web, and it stated: "The most distinctive characteristic of an iron-rich soil is a ruddy orange or red color, though not all red soils are rich in iron. When the iron deposits in the soil oxidize, they turn a distinctive rust color that tints the soil red. " In early summer when the stems of cut-blooms are softer, they wilt easily if I use acidic rain. My cut-blooms always last longer in my alkaline tap water at pH 9, rather than acidic rain water. My tap water leaves whitish calcium and hard magnesium deposits on pots. We have hard well water, and our soil is high in dolomitic rocks (calcium plus magnesium). In the fall when the stems are harder, cut blooms can tolerate acidic rain water better with less wilting. Below are some recent cut blooms this Sept. 2022. Dark red are Munstead Wood, it's a constant bloomer as 8th-year own root, light pink is Princess Charlene d. Monaco (4th-year own-root), and whites are 12th-year own-root Mary Magdalene, lowest ruffled pink are Augusta Luis: The Dark Lady (red), Tchaikosky (light yellow), and Sweet Mademoiselle (salmon) are heavy bloomers this Sept. Tchaikosky is 4.5" across and Sweet M is 4". They are fertilized with biochar at pH 8.6 which supplies calcium and potassium for large blooms.

My zone seems to be a little warmer than yours...where are you in Ontario (if you don't mind saying)?; but I agree...green is a sign of hope. Having said that, I too am in your area of the country and my GT was up weeks ago, all leafed out. I even moved it and it's still leafed out and going. None of the late frosts or coldness harmed it. So, either I have a very strange, tough little GT or perhaps there's another reason you should look for with yours, like is he in a lot of shade? All my Austins came up quickly and are doing well...that's part of the reason I grow them! Hope yours are okay...patience is always a virtue in the garden anyway, so it can't hurt to wait and see.

I am in Toronto and the reason I got GT was because I thought it is quite hardy to canadian weather. It has not yet leafed out - so I am quite worried. It gets around 8-9 hours of sun so is not in shade at all. I am hoping that when it was leaving - the leaves were not eater by the bunnies. They are creating quite a havoc. That tends to slow the progress too.
How old is your GT? Mine is only 1 year old. What else has done well for you? Most of my roses came back - with the exception of these 2.

Yves Piaget was not happy in my yard. It was a few years back, and I can't remember if he just died, or Dr. Huey took over. I was such a novice then (not that I'm any expert now!). I was so disappointed when he passed on that I gave up on roses. LOL.

But I began reading this forum, and my "rose" interest has been rekindled! As a matter of fact, I feel myself becoming a roseaholic! I even ordered roses online. See how easily I can get off on a tangent!!! LOL.

So anyway, I hope you have better luck with Yves than I had. Let us know.

Green is a sign of hope, but I lost a GT one year after a severe winter. You may be lucky and he will suddenly start growing and catch up soon. Or he may start to put out some leaves or shoots from the base, then peter out because the root system was too far damaged. Or it may just struggle along and be puny for at least this year. Graham Thomas is not a cold hardy rose. I live in Central Illinois and unless I cover my plant it will be killed. I have two plants and one is hardier than the other. Mine is getting ready to bloom!

Hi Ritug;

I'm not far from you. My GT is in his second year (3rd maybe? I forget.), and this last winter I didn't get around to mulching or anything. He came back beautifully as I said...in fact was one of the first with such a great flush of leaves; he had virtually no die-back at all. I can say the same for all of my Austins and none of them are planted in any protected area. I can't imagine he's not cold hardy, although this year I will certainly not take any chances...I'm going to mulch my roses!

As far as what does well for me:

Don Juan (climber x2)
Double Delight (BS magnet though)
Iceburg (it's excellent)
John Davis (Explorer that was supposed to be a climber and doesn't, but is very hardy, flowers well)

Of the Austins:

Graham Thomas
Winchester Cathedral x2 (Love. It.)
Mary Rose (I don't think she could be killed, even if a person tried!)
Tess of the D'Urbervilles x3 (beautiful)

I do have a mini, but I don't know the name; and a red climber that my sister-in-law dug up from her garden, laid in the sun for three days before giving it to me, has gotten moved and still grows like mad and flowers with abandon. Wish I knew the name because I'd get more! I'm looking at getting "Leander" and "Jude the Obscure", but we'll see. I'm not the kind to baby the garden, so what I plant must have a will to live and I've found the Austins have that.

I know my in-laws have problems with the bunnies, but mostly with them eating canes, not leaves. I heard somewhere (on some forum here?) that putting a rubber snake near the bunnies' den will scare them away. At any rate, I still agree with everyone else...green canes are still something to work with. I'd give it time.

I live in Nebraska. We have very cold winters here and lots of late freezes also. Last year I lost 7 DA roses due to a long late freeze but GT was not one of them. It is about 10 years old now and even when only a few green canes survive, it bounces back like crazy.
My hardiest DA roses are Heritage, GT, Mary Rose , Abraham Darby and Winchester Cathedral. My Getrude Jeckel was one of those that died.

I'm in zone 4 and I have resigned myself to having to replant Graham Thomas every few years. Most years he will come back from being cut to the ground; every few years there is no life left come spring. I'd not call GT one of the more hardy Austins. I have others that winter over much, much easier: Mary Rose, Gertrude Jekyll, Abraham Darby, Heritage, Lilian Austin, Tamora and Glamis Castle have all been with me for years.

As to your roses in their current state - if you have removed all dead and damaged canes, right down to the soil level if necessary, and you have anything green left (and even if you don't see any green above ground) just keep watering and waiting. I have had a winter damaged rose break as late as the first week in July. There is still hope. Don't however, try to push it with fertilizer. You may in fact do more harm than good. Hold off on the extra boosts until you see new growth. Good Luck!

I bought Yves Piaget last spring from Roses Unlimited. It was small when it arrived in the mail. It didn't do much during the summer. I protected my new Romanticas by mounding topsoil on them at Christmastime. Yves died. Rouge Royale survived but is small. Bolero is doing great. Comtesse de Province is ok. Last year Peter Mayle died without winter protection. I bought Graham Thomas about 4 years ago as a small own root from Walmart. It has survived without protection and gets pretty big during the summer. This spring it is not bouncing back as well. The Prince is about to expire. Golden Celebration and A Shropshire Lad died the previous winter. Abraham Darby bounced back pretty well. Sharifa Asma is very hardy. I planted three new Austins last spring and did not winter protect. They all survived (with dieback) and are doing well. These three Austins are Evelyn, Tradescant and Jude the Obscure.

Graham Thomas is one of my hardy Austin roses.
I started off in the beginning when its was real young mulching, mounding and wrapping, but now that it is older and the canes are stronger I don't do all that work anymore.
I have had it for 5 years and does a great job coming back every spring with 75% green canes.

Ritug, what is the height of your GT
Remember its just 1 year old, and has been very cold the last couple of weeks, give it some time.
Try mounding soil around it and keep it covered for a few days to see if that will help.

Thank you all for the advise. Much appreciated. I will give them both time and hope they come back. They are both such beautiful roses. From all the comments - looks like Mary Rose, could be worth trying. I do have Champlain, WIlliam Baffin , Iceberg and Knockout who are doing great.
