Best Roses in your Garden (voted 2006)

Cleaning out my computer files, I ran across this list which might interest those of you who are still thinking about spring orders. I think the list is from mid-summer 2006--about 75 posters voted. Several noted that these were their best roses that week--they might vote differently another week. Posters were allowed to define "best rose" any way they wished.

Third Place: Iceberg

Fourth Place (nine-way tie): Fragrant Cloud; Hot Cocoa; William Shakespeare 2000; Moonstone; Chrysler Imperial; Tamora; Graham Thomas; Gemini; Eden Climber.

Fifth Place (four-way tie): Just Joey; Distant Drums; Tiffany; the Knock Outs.

Sixth Place (nine-way tie): Mme. Isaac Periere; Souvenir de la Malmaison; Peace; Chicago Peace; Love and Peace; Cherry Parfait; Queen Elizabeth; Angel Face; Apricot Nectar.

Hi Victoria, WOW! You did such an EXCELLENT job of preparing the perfect package! Items for... brightening my garden, pampering my senses, and things to record seasonal changes, plans, thoughts for next year in my garden. I personally think she should win ~Best Gift Robin 2006~ Here is a pic of all what was sent... and I'll describe all the goodies in the box after the picture. In the box was a gorgeous clay (ceramic) Garden Angel, and a journal, cute Geddes cat pen. I plan on using the journal and pen to make notes/thoughts on the garden this year, and plans for next years garden! Also, gardening gloves/seeds were included. Italian parsley, Astilbe, Sweet Basil, Culvers Root Alba, Coriander, Nepta Subsessilis, Window box sweet peas, Monarda, Gloriosa Daisy, Dill. A few packages of Sweet Ginger peach tea --YUM! (I can't wait to try this tomorrow) and write in my new journal about all the new plans I have for several new window boxes my Husband promised to make me. Along with revamping a few flower beds! Some bulbs were included-- a bag of Crocosmia, and a flash light. Does she think of everything, or what? LOL! Jobes plant spikes..to insure some good healthly houseplants! And stuff to pamper myself with! Sugar Pear shower gel, Sugar Pear Lotion, Sugar Pear Body Butter, Sugar Pear Body Mist. I love the light scent! It smells sooooo good! Just when you thought the box couldn't carry anymore, LOL! A grooming kit, plus 2 cucumber melon candles! And the box was a gorgeous cheeta animal print along with a cheeta print hand towel! Also, a clay thermometer, potpourri, and a CD she personally 'mixed/burned' all the songs for. Its such relaxing music, I love it! I hope I didn't forget anything! I'm glad lori_elf offered her comments, as she has experience with your zone and its disease pressures, and recommends many once bloomers. I LOVE them, Gallicas perhaps in particular. Some of my favorites: 'Ypsilante', 'Tuscany Superb', 'Mme. Zoetmans', 'Centifolia', 'Chapeau de Napoleon', 'Shailer's White Moss', 'Belle Amour', 'Robert le Diable'. You will notice that several of these haven't been mentioned by others who have posted here. That may be because they're susceptible to black spot, which isn't a problem in my dry summer Mediterranean garden; on the other hand it may be because they haven't grown them. There are many many wonderful roses among the old once bloomers, and just because a variety isn't named in this thread doesn't mean it isn't marvelous. I wonder what gardeners in your conditions think about Rosa hugonis? This gets massacred by cane girdler in my garden, but where it's happy it's one of the most magnificent roses there is. There are others related to it: they're known collectively as the early spring yellows. When I started gardening I preferred repeat blooming old roses; more is better, right? But the more I grew the once flowering roses the better I liked them, and now they're my favorites. I also greatly adore the Teas, Chinas, and Noisettes, but they would be touchy in your zone, if you managed to grow them at all.

For this year 2007, I would say:

#1 JUDE THE OBSCURE
(floriferous, love the colour, the shape - looks globular. Healthy, scent is amazing but doesn't waft yet probably due to it's young age. Very glad that I bought this rose)

#2 CINDERELLA fairytale
(very healthy, glossy, lots of clusters that last for about 2 months and later few scatter blooms. Apple scent is mild-none, light pink rose -wish it was darker pink, but still a best performer in my garden. Thus second place.)

I think I'm too inexperienced of a rose grower still to have a list like those above. But I do want to make sure the rose 'What a Peach' gets at least Honorable Mention for being its fast rebloom, lovely little apricot flowers and unusual climber-esque growing habit.

I have never posted anything to any site in the many years I have browsed this forum but I just had to share with you all the two best Ohio roses I have ever grown - Buck's Aunt Honey and Frontier Twirl - perfume, color, strong growth, and with little care on my part. They were both planted 2007 as twigs and grew to nearly four feet with continuous bloom and wonderful perfume. These are my nominations

Sorry, I gotta break mine out between varieties to be fair to all of them. The order of how I like them is not necessarily the order they are listed here--i.e. DayBreaker is my favorite of all roses and they can all change places very quickly depending on how they are performing at any given time.

Best Roses in your Garden: 2007

First Place: Cherry Parfait
Second Place: Our Lady of Guadalupe
Tied for Third Place: Heritage, Double Delight, William Shakespeare 2000, Veteran's Honor, Moonstone

It's not too late for others to join in. In fact, I wish you would. Our sample is still very small--would benefit from more input.

Remember, for our purposes, "best" is anyway you want to define it. What were your best roses for the 2007 season?

I was distracted by the 2006 part, and just now see you want favs for 2007. I'm guessing that means new plantings.
Off the top of my head, for hybrid teas, I would say Pope John Paul II, Tahitian Sunset, Sheer Magic and Halloween took top prizes. For floribundas, Vavoom and Sisters at Heart were my favorite new ones.

It's cool to see some of Vernon Rickard's roses on this list...Erin Alonso and Robin Alonso. His Rachel is on my best list...a beautiful miniflora, deep pink, fragrant, many petals, very good bloomer, good growth. Erin Alonso is also a great bloomer for me.

2007 was such a challenging year for gardening but all the same I had some good performers. Cherry Parfait is usually a great one here but sulked in the drought. Other good ones for 07:

My best were William Shakespeare 2000 and Distant Drums. I adore the color of Star of the Nile, but it doesn't bloom too much for me.

Out of about 350 mature plants and another 150 not established enough to rate fairly:

Climbing Jackie - a constant blooming climbing mini, from Moore

Elmshorn - constant bloom machine

Distant Drums - fast repeat, tons of bloom, amazing color

Johann Strauss - came into its own with distinction after a few years

The Pilgrim - carefree and always blooming

JACtan - delicate, color to die for, blooms don't last long but so lovely

Colette - the perfect anchor plant on the corner of a gazebo

Opening Night and Black Magic - the most constant blooming reds in my garden

Honorable mentions -
Burgundy Iceberg - best new plant
Cardinal Hume - amazing plant because I have no blackspot problem; evidently not as beloved where BS is a problem.

I could go on (and on) but less is more when according honors.
