Which pendant glass?

Hi

i am getting 2 10 inch pendant lights to go over 30x72 kitchen island . i have a choice of glass, but cant decide. the store was noce to let me bring home the sample glass. the samples are smaller than what i will be purchasing, and one is a different shape, but the glass design is the same , the owner let me take then home so i can see the glass designs in my space.

i posted pics of my counter , cabinet , possible backspalsh i may choose , and the 3 glass options i also posted pics of the pendants from website. what do you think?

You need to wait. Wait for the backsplash, cabinets and counter top. you cant really visualize the finish line until these things are put in place. Lighting is last, because things change along the way. And because the pendants will give you working light over the island, I would pick the second or third glass if those where the only choices as some light will get pushed out of the bottom.

I would personally choose the one that shows the bulb the least... Not a fan of looking into a bare bulb, especially at night.

i thought against clear glass, but stifgled to find anyrhing in an opal/ frosted glass that looked nice. i have recessed lights , so the pendant are for ambent lighitng only ,they will be on a dimmer, so hopefully i wont have an issue . never had pendant lights before, so this is new territoty for me

We didn't put in under cabinet lighting, so the dim glow from the brown globes has that same "night light" glow to them....very soft, very curvy, I think Italian murano glass when I look at them...but they also look retro to me... DH wants "bright" light and masculine....they have lots of other choices at Lowes for these. I liked the square heavy/1/4" thick white glass ones, but they were small too. They had little blue ones, hat shaped ones,black & white stripes...etc... I appreciate ALL your input.....keep em coming....I need help!!! Make sure your island pendants don’t have too much glare for someone sitting at the island. The style of our lights (different from yours) is the same over the sink and the island. The light over the sink was fine, but the glare was horrible when sitting at the island - no problem when standing around. It never occurred to me this was a potential problem. Fortunately bulbs with covered bottoms - which I had never heard of - solved our issue.

I have the same pendants as @mihelene. I have NO issues with glare although plenty of folks on this site warned about that and said it would be a problem ----- it has not been. I will second, though, that they do have to be cleaned regularly and that is another task to keep up on; although I often wonder if I had something not clear, surely it would be getting just as dirty and need cleaning.....? Maybe I should just feel grateful that my lights make me keep a cleaner house. ;) Also, it seems to me that the height of your ceiling isn't such an issue as the height the pendants are recommended to be hung is 30-36" above your counter top regardless of what height your ceiling is. I have 9' ceilings and my globes are about 15.5" long. I don't think an 8' ceiling would be a problem. (My sister in law has 8' ceilings and she just installed fixtures similar to your posted picture. They seem bigger than mine (perhaps just in width) and they look good.)

Kay, scroll up to the very first comment I wrote. look at the guides. and the pics. there is a sizing guide. i think anything over 12-13" in diameter is too large for your island size. and you don't want anything too tall (like that hinkley is 14.5" tall!) You have to be between 30-36" above the countertop. now add in the height of your pendant. the space left over is from the light to the ceiling. You don't want a 1 foot length of cord/chain on a huge pendant! it's going to look weird. go smaller. the one pictured is mine (very top comment) and is 12x12 I believe. here's a sizing guide. Would you consider something with more color?
I’m hesitant towards the glass because you can see the light bulb. And because it gets dusty. Noticeably.
White glass sounds lovely! I’ll look around.
I also think some color would add a nice element. But what’s your comfort zone?

im not interested in colored glass, as its too commital and pendant lights arent as easy to change as say paint, window treatments , rugs etc, whcih is where i plan to add blue/ grey color .

Ive seen ones like that, it is nice, im jist not sure if it will look right, as i have my dining room chandelier that is now visible because we took the wall done between mitchen and DR, so it is one large combo space now .

So hard not being able to actually see in the space. matbe it would look okay, i jsit feel like i dont know!!

Agreed… so much money and time spend, settling is not what i want to do .

sure… here are pocs the wall is down now, so its texhnically one shared space now of kitchen / DR kirchen cabients will be refinished in white. Its still in the rough

Thank you RL Yes.. i am not ordering anything until the rest is in place, but i like to have a few possible options in place so that when the time comes to order, im not starting from dquare 1. the only thing i know for sure is the countertop, as that has been ordered and to be installed in 2 weeks but until it is installed , im not choosing a backsplash or the cabinet white color the backsplash and cabinet i i have shown in the pic is a possible first choice, but i have other sampels here as well to consider. your advice is good, as thar is how i am going about it. Its the best way to do it for sure!

Given the kitchen is now open to your traditional dining room (and its chandelier lol), suggest trying to find something that is leaning towards classic vs modern.

If open to one long style, your options will increase and something like below might work well with the dining room.

we decided to do 2 pendants , since we have rhe 1 chandelier over dining table

the first set of pendants you suggested are pretty. really nice and will ad to my list do you have a reference?

the second pendnat is actually the same exact glads as the round choice i posted, but in a diffent shaoe. we really like that glass best out of the samples we brought home. its called water glass and it also comes in the shape you posted in addition to the round. the globe shape just looked really pretty and i thought the round may be nice with tthe round back dining chairs i have. The one you posted may even be from the same company- innovation lighting (?) i saw that on display in the store. the water glass looks really pretty both with and without light .

Does anyone actually like transparent glass pendants? You've basically got naked bulbs casting light 360 degrees. Seems like the light might be ugly and in your eyes?

Robb, i dont like completely plain clear glass pendants. the ones im thinking of have hammering/ etching/ dimensional designs to them. however, there must be a lot of people that do like plain clear glass, as there are a wealth to choose from offered from a multiude of companies . someones gitta be buying them 🤷‍♀️

i decided on the water glass one , the last in the original photo. i am happy with my choice
