Which pendant light should I use? pics..

I purchased can light converters in brushed nickel. Love this idea over my breakfast bar....but I can't decide on which glass globe to use. DH likes the black and gold one, but I think it's too small and it's VERY bright. The brown one is bigger and glows at night, not very bright. I'm using a 60watt bulb, can't up the wattage....which one would you use and should I stager the heights? Please chime in...

I like the rounded brown ones, don't like the other ones at all. Don't stagger the heights. That's my vote! =)

birdgardner - You're too funny! Does that mean I should hire some local teenagers to jump up and down on my stairs to test if the height is good? Lol! avesmor - Thank so much for your thoughtful reply and beautiful photo! You are a wealth of knowledge! Sorry I don't have a better picture. Yes, it will be mounted to an 8' ceiling above the 2nd story floor pictured. And yes, we have a railing now (that photo is a few months old when the floors were getting worked on). Position wise, if you are standing on the higher angled landing, the light will be directly above where the missing railing should be (not centered directly over the staircase). I'll put an "X" there. Does that help? If it's still too unclear, I can try to get a better picture with the light that's there now. Centered at eye level as you stand. Hmmm - that sounds like a good height. Yes, I am worried about the cleaning/changing bulb factor. The electrician is going to have to construct a scaffold just to install it. You can't just plop a ladder against the wall to reach it. =/ I went with enclosed glass thinking it would get less dusty than the bell jar style pendant that I originally wanted that was open at the top (DH said NO WAY to that idea). I didn't even Think to do an open design that I could have attacked with a swiffer. Sigh. Hindsight is 20/20, right? Changing bulbs will likely be a nightmare. DH wants to go with an energy efficient Long lasting bulb so he has to change it as seldomly as possible. That's terrific that your DH can reach it with a hook. My DH is not that tall (could I hire yours when it's time to change a bulb? ha ha, just kidding). But maybe we could find a tall, long limbed friend or relative to help us!

I think you are referring to monorail lighting. It definitely has a more modern vibe and is not for everyone. The reason I think what you have now does not work well is that the shades are very small/narrow and you probably have lower watt bulbs in them. It looks like you have recessed lighting as well. Is that not working for you as far as lighting the sink/prep side? I can't quite tell, but the spacing may be too far apart for the size--plus it looks like you have tall ceilings and all this has an impact. Do they cast a shadow when someone is working on the prep side? What I'd do is make a scaled drawing of your kitchen with the light fixtures and wattages and take it to a good quality lighting store that helps with lighting design and see what they recommended since you already spent money on one solution that is not working. When we remodeled our kitchen the place I ordered my lighting from did our lighting design. In many cases, their recommendations differed than my electrician's and most cases I went with their recommendations and am very happy that I did. For the uplight, you could go a few routes, especially with respect to dimming functionality. And some fixtures don't support dimming, so you need to figure that out. To that end, I suggest you think through the use cases. For example, the use case that I think I'd appreciate most is late evening, after you've retired to another room of the house, at which time a mellow indirect glow from the skylight cutout would be particularly pleasant. You might also want the more light from this source on occasion, in which case you'd want brighter lights on a dimmer. That being said, here's some options. I'm thinking two, centered on the skylights, mounted near the bottom rim of the cutout (just above the beam probably). Regarding the pendant, I know that selecting pendants is hard enough without more to think about, but one downside of a single pendant vs multiple pendants is thhat single sources create worse shadows. And the clear glass pendants above exacerbate this harsh shadow problem by being point sources, whereas the Fillsta, for example, mitigates this problem because it's effectively a uniform 31" sphere of light. This large diffuser also makes it possible to use a brighter source. For example, you could put a 300W equivalent CFL in the Fillsta, but such a bright light would be unacceptably harsh in a point source like the clear glass pendants above.

Thank you for your advice! I didn't know that lantern was called the Darlana, thank you as it is so beautiful! I like that idea too because I am using lanterns in the front of the house. Do you think I should use the gold or rubbed bronze (or black?) with the chrome faucet and pulls? What types of fixtures coordinate with it? I have been searching Houzz for ideas but am curious what I should use in the formal dining room, breakfast nook, and foyer that will coordinate but not be too matchy matchy with the Darlana?

brown is better, but color (in the picture at least) doesn't seem compelling with your granite. Maybe it's worth continuing to search.

Shape of brown has a mid-century vibe is that the look you're going for? Perhaps that's why you're thinking multi-level height?
If this space is a bar for eating etc. should definitely be on the same level.

As pictured the lights appear to be hanging way too high.
My guess unless lowering them creates a problem in some space specific way, that brightness of light would be less a problem if lower. If you want light for both task and atmosphere get a brighter light and use a dimmer.

I vote for the brown ones also. They look warmer and cozier whereas the other ones look colder. Your DH likes the manly looking ones and the other ones are more curvy and feminine.

Unanimous - brown, between these two. The gold are too small. What are some of the other elements in the kitchen? As profrip says, it's hard to choose in isolation without knowing what "look" you are trying to achieve.

Beautiful Brown it is!

I love the brown ones and I think I saw something
similar at a Lowes or maybe HD. It is so nice to
see the brown ones in a real kitchen. They are truly
beautiful and look very expensive. I am a fan of
Murano Glass and the brown pendants look
like those from Italy.

The other reason I like the brown ones is
that they have a nice curve to them that softens the
overall look. The colors look lovely with your granite
and wood cabs. The others are too sharp looking
and make me think of a sports bar or something.

I like your granite too.

We didn't put in under cabinet lighting, so the dim glow from the brown globes has that same "night light" glow to them....very soft, very curvy, I think Italian murano glass when I look at them...but they also look retro to me... DH wants "bright" light and masculine....they have lots of other choices at Lowes for these. I liked the square heavy/1/4" thick white glass ones, but they were small too. They had little blue ones, hat shaped ones,black & white stripes...etc...

I appreciate ALL your input.....keep em coming....I need help!!!
