How high should stairwell pendant light hang? (pics)
Hi everyone!
We're trying to get the electrician back here this week to install a fan and some lighting, including our stairwell light.
This is the light (the one on the right - we are going to stick with it):
This is the only shot of the stairwell that I have at the moment:
We have 8' ceilings on both floors. The stairwell has 2 small landings in the middle. I think you can tell where it is open to the 2nd floor ceiling.
Sooo - my question is - how high (or low) should the stairwell pendant light hang? It will be mounted from the 2nd floor ceiling (obviously, lol) directly above the higher angled landing area where the railing should be.

12 years agoI'm not fully understanding your layout, but high enough that you aren't going to bump your head. Would it basically be mounted to a ceiling 8' above the 2nd story floor we're seeing on the left?
Position-wise, do you plan to center it in the opening? That, too, might affect height. Are you going to add in railing or keep the stairs open?
Ours is about centered at eye level as you stand on the upper story. But we don't have the same layout. It doesn't look it in the picture, but you couldn't reach over the railing and touch it. It's probably 6 feet away.
Sorry for the "dust" - this was taken during construction.
BTW, unsolicited advice. Make sure you can easily reach it since you're (I assume) going to clean it fairly frequently. I went with a glass-free design specifically so I didn't have to worry about cleaning the glass (as I mentioned above, it's at least 6' from the nearest wall, and that second story ceiling is about 18' up...). Since I went glass-free I can just use one of those extension rod Swiffer things.

Comments (7)We didn't put in under cabinet lighting, so the dim glow from the brown globes has that same "night light" glow to them....very soft, very curvy, I think Italian murano glass when I look at them...but they also look retro to me... DH wants "bright" light and masculine....they have lots of other choices at Lowes for these. I liked the square heavy/1/4" thick white glass ones, but they were small too. They had little blue ones, hat shaped ones,black & white stripes...etc... I appreciate ALL your input.....keep em coming....I need help!!! Comments (1)My suggestion would be to suspend your pendants centered on the upper glass window approx 24" or so down from ceiling. Sometimes, with a pitched ceiling, the light will suspend slightly to the downside of the j box even though the box is centered in the space. I would go for a round shaped pendant under 12" diameter each. My preference would be to illuminate wall and ceiling as well as down. Keep it simple because there will be a lot of them in a line. Comments (3)@beverlyFLADeziner what about size of the fixture? I've read add the dimensions of the space in ft and that number in inches should be the size of the light. But what about like in your photo? Do you use the entire space wall to wall or wall to stair railing or railing to railing? Thanks...See Morebabs711
