Ideas for 3-tiered bowl planter?
Comments (8)Wow! thanks frank and jim! Those are some great ideas. The ones I have are the terra cotta look plastic shallow bowls. I don't think there is anything to suspend the bowls, they were just sitting on the dirt in the bowl beneath. I love the hosta fern combo. And those clay pot towers of yours look fantastic. I like the one with a little of everything - especially the trailing lobelia. Great stuff for small space gardening! Thank you again!...See More3 or 4 drawers per cabinet stack?
Comments (30)Hi Annkh, it sounds like we are at a similar place in our remodels, I have just finalized the layout in the last few days...I think it's the last revision! I need to finish up these cabinet choices asap, because everything else is rolling along, and my cabinet decisions are slowing us down! Regarding the ROT, good point about useage of taller items...most items would fit in a large drawer, and if tallest pot doesn't fit, yes I could store elsewhere. It might be worth it to chance the drawers. I have a 4' wide place to put either a ROT or drawer cabs for pots and pans. To both you and drbeannie2000 - I just calculated that my FiestaWare dishes to go in 1 large drawer are a whopping 68 lbs. IDK if my drawers will be capable of that weight, and IDK if I actually want them all in one drawer - that just seems like a lot of weight to put in one drawer. They are all different colors and even on the upper cabinet shelf when I wanted to use certain colors I had to lift a heft of plates to get what I wanted. It might actually work better for me to have 4 drawers, then I can put my fav dishes in one drawer, and less fav - or 'summer colors' - in the next drawer. Seasonally switch them around, most used in top drawer. I'm putting an island in my remodel and that's where the dishes cabs will be - I will have 2 - 24" W drawer cabs for dishes (FW in one, and a set of pottery dishes in the other.) I think, after all, that 4 drawers might work better for me with these heavy dishes, and the bottom/largest drawer will hold the serving bowls and platters to these dishes. Does anyone see a downside to that?...See MorePlease critique my unusual two-tiered hillside house plan
Comments (28)One of the problems you'll have to figure out is how to hold up the houses on the hill. Generally, this is done with a foundation / retaining wall. Without knowing the soil type, it would be difficult to figure out how the retaining wall would have to be constructed. Generally, you can think of a retaining wall as being an "L" shape with the horizontal leg of the "L" being on the uphill side so that the weight of the soil holds the vertical portion upright against the soil pushing against the vertical wall section. There can be a 1:1 (or greater) relationship between the vertical and horizontal legs depending upon the soil type, This means that a 12-foot high vertical wall would need at least a 12-foot horizontal section to retain the wall. You have to excavate the hill back, pour the horizontal and vertical wall sections - and then backfill the soil against the vertical wall. You'd really need a structural engineer to do this type of design, as if it is not calculated correctly and then built to match the structural plans, you'll have the entire building sliding down the hill. An alternative might be caisson (drilled) foundations - but that requires a caisson drill and access to the site where the foundations would be placed. You could also cantilever the houses off of the hill side - but, that's some real involved structural work. One other thought - while you're planning on a composting toilet - have you thought about how to dispose of the grey water (shower, sinks)? Comments (15)Drawer dimensions are always discussed by the external drawer front dimensions. Yes, the internal space is more important, but that's why you have to do the math for the type and brand of construction. It can be radically different between a frameless line and an inset one for instance. You only get 30'' of physical space to divide here. And you do want to have some type of visual continuity rather than higgledy piggledy random distribution of sizes. That usually translates to having a uniform top drawer for all cabinets, regardless of the distribution of the rest of the cabinet space. Unless you are doing 2 deep pot and pan drawers, and those are generally separated out from the rest of the cabinets by either a range, or a full height cabinet with pullout or tray storage....See More- 20 days ago
