Ideas for 3-tiered bowl planter?

I was given one of these at the end of the season 2011. The bottom bowl is about 15" across and 6" deep. The other two bowls are smaller and they stack on top of the larger one.

Does anyone use one of these? What do you plant in there? Any pictures? I don't know what I will put in this planter. At a total loss!

can you narrow the description ... is this table top .. or one of those ancient roma stone things???

or maybe everyone else understands ... and i am a dullard this morn.. known to happen ... lol ...

a pic might work if you have that technology ...

october, you need to attach a picture of this planter. We can't make our usual brilliant suggestions without having an idea of what you're talking about. Your verbal description isn't bringing up a picture in my mind....not ken's either, I guess.

Go for it. I would think it would be best for shade annuals, but Hosta would certainly over-winter in it. I had a tiny dwarf Hosta bonsai companion plant that over-wintered in a half cup of soil in a ceramic pot that was on its side for the entire winter. The pot, btw, was on a grid work about 3 ft off the ground, so it didn't have the moderating effect of the earth's heat to help it through. If the fountain is old, don't worry about the cement leaching. I see Hosta, Impatiens, Begonia, asparagus fern (Asparagus plumosa - not the other one), Streptocarpella, ivy, Fuschia .... in it. ;o) Good luck! Al

Need ideas for Strawberry planters

There are a number of vertical strawberry planters available, but keeping the soil in them and the strawberries watered is a challenge, especially here in SoCal. I've used the conventional strawberry pots, and if there is any die back with the plants, a hole develops and the soil washes out. Also, the planters need to be turned regularly so the plants in the back get enough sun. A plastic pipe with holes positioned down the middle of the pot is necessary to get the water deep down inside the pot. The Growin' Bags from Parks are perhaps the most affordable containers, hold up well, can hang anywhere, but they dry out fast here in SoCal, and need to be watered twice a day in the hottest weather. A quick once over with the hose isn't enough to soak the whole bag. Only one third to one half of my original strawberry plants are still alive in them. Soil seems to be critical in these containers, something that retains moisture, but drains easily. Adding water polymers to the potting soil seems to help. Coco Coir might help also. The easiest way to grow them, for me, is still the regular raised bed with potting soil. The plants can be crowded a bit, especially the alpines, are easy to water, weed, fertilize. A strip border bed that runs along the front of a regular bed, say around 2-3 feet deep, and as long as the regular bed, still allows you to reach over the strawberries to weed the main bed, and is easy to squeeze into an area with limited space. The raised part settles down over a few years, so when there are runners, they're easy to tuck back into the main bed, root, and keep the bed going, not take over the yard. If you are using it outside paint it with something to waterproof it.Maybe the stuff they use to waterproof the little overalls used for planters?? Sit it beside the bowling ball and put a pot of flowers inside.Or turn it on it's side and stick the BB halfway out as if it is rolling out of the bag and maybe add a few plants spilling out around the ball.Find an old pair of bowling shoes to sit beside it and stick some plants inside.That's all I can think of at the moment............Lillie

My experience is limited to window boxes, but here is what I have learned: - Plastic liners do help to slow down the rot as well as retain moisture. They will also provide a barrier between the roots and any chemicals in the treated wood (which retard fungle & plant growth in addition to edible concerns). -Angle brackets for supports are definitely recommended if you want it to last longer. Drainage is necessary of course. To reduce the bottom wood exposure to moisture drill a larger hole (1”) than the plastic liner. All wood rots eventually, even teak, so be prepared for periodically mending. I‘ve been toying with the idea of trying fiber cement composit boards (from remnants). - Soil: Potting mix or leaf fro will be much lighter than topsoil. If using top soil add some peat or composted wood chips to lighten and loosen the soil. Mixing in some Soil Moist granules will help a great deal in reducing the frequency you need to water and makes the plants very happy. I’ve heard that baby diapers do the same thing but have never tried it. i Would also add a slow release fertilizer to store bought top soil. The design looks beautiful and ambitious. I would love to have one on my patio. It would get the strawberries away from the slugs, mice, and chipmunks who eat all of mine. Enjoy!

Wow! thanks frank and jim! Those are some great ideas. The ones I have are the terra cotta look plastic shallow bowls. I don't think there is anything to suspend the bowls, they were just sitting on the dirt in the bowl beneath.

I love the hosta fern combo. And those clay pot towers of yours look fantastic. I like the one with a little of everything - especially the trailing lobelia.

most of us have no clue what you are talking about..

and some nut with two first names has 80 of them in the yard.. whats that all about frank ..

i was surprised they all didnt have hosta in all them ... lol

The way my stacked pots are setup is putting other pots that are also full of soil inside to support the weight above. Otherwise the top pots would sink and not stay level.

Oh! Thank you so much for the info. Now to find the right size pots. They need to be just below the surface. Should be easy with my shallow bowls.
