Washer broke on laundry center -- what to replace it with

I have a 12 year old Kenmore Laundry Center and the washer just broke but the dryer works fine. The appliance repair person said it's not worth fixing because the part would be too expensive to put on an old machine (up to $400). Should I buy a new laundry center, or just buy a new washer and use the existing laundry center for the dryer? I hate front loader washers so I don't want to get stackables. Any thoughts? Is a new laundry center a bad investment? It costs the same as a new Hotpoint washer and dryer. Any thoughts about Hotpoint? I'm leaning in that direction. A new one is on sale at HD for $498. My closet is pretty small so I would probably have to have carpentry done to fix a new washer and dryer side by side.

CR tested the $500 Hotpoint HTW240ASKWS and its performance was mediocre, scoring 55 out of 100. But for $628 you can buy the LG WT7005CW which did perform well. Note: in the HD comments, some owners wrote that the LG washer didn't provide enough water. They didn't bother to read the online user manual which describes how to add water.

This happened to my mother’s Maytag laundry center. I asked the repair person for the needed part number, and searched for it online. There are companies online that specialize in discontinued appliances parts. The part cost about $40 from a company called Midwest Appliance Parts Co, but there are others. The repair person was amazed I found it, and charged about $100 to install it.

Find out the appliance part number your repair person said cost $400, and search for it online. Since it’s Kenmore, it may be a Whirlpool part. Appliance repair people don’t have the time to do this, so go look for it yourself.

After reading all of the posts here, i wonder how in the world our relatives cleaned things up without a pressure washer!! Why, they used a broom or mop, with liberal use of soap and muscle! Never had to worry about the things breaking--oh, maybe a mop handle, or the broom lost some bristles, but they never had to borrow the neighbors fancy power washer, which weren't available 40 years ago, except for commercial use. Seems to me, there's a sucker born every minute, reinforced by the stories of all the troubles apparently inherent with powered pressure washers! And--if the thing ain't made by an American company, don't buy it! and especially not if it has Chinese made parts! Back when i was a kid (the 30's) toys were imported from Japan, that were of such inferior quality, the stores sold them really cheap! And, the only thing that came from Japan that we took notice of was Pearl Harbor! Rusty

When I moved from my old trusty Maytag top load 712 series washer and dryer to the front load neptunes, the most significant difference between the old dryer and new dryer was about 17 years. Almost the same exact operation between the two and very nearly the same mechanical components. I dont really thing dryer technology has changed much in nearly 40 years. keep the dryer if it works fine.

OlympicEagle, the Maytag toploader you'd buy *today* is virtually *identical* to your KitchenAid toploader (and to Whirlpool, Roper, Estate, Admiral, some Amana, and most Kenmore toploaders). :-) Consumer Reports data is in reference to a toploader design Maytag used toward the end, before Whirlpool bought the company. Maytag's Neptune frontloader design, which is the source of their tarnished frontloader reputation, is still being used (or was until a short time ago) under Crosley label, and possibly Amana. There were some redesigns that largely fixed the original problems. Maytag-labeled Neptunes were still on the market until late last year. My neighbor bought one from Lowe's. The Maytag Epic frontloader (NOT the Z) is essentially identical to what was previously the KitchenAid Ensemble frontloader. The "Z" may be akin to Whirlpool's Duet Sport offering.

Hi MizLizzie, did you decide what machines to buy? I have a narrow and shallow laundry closet with an 80s version of a Thin Twin in it at a rental property, and I am debating whether to get the Speed Queen laundry center because it is pretty pricey but huge for such a depth (most shallow washers are 1.5 to 2 cubic feet, the SQ is 3.3). All other frontloaders are about 30 inches deep and stick out way too far. If you have the space, you should put in the full size W/D because it is easier to find a replacement down the road. Also, you can get a much larger tub size, up to 7 cubic feet. I can tell you that the steam dryers (I have an Electrolux WaveTouch at home) spray water into the drum as they tumble and it is better than putting a damp cloth in there because the dampness is better distributed. I have no use for the steam washer setting though. Hope this helps!

Electrolux/Frigidaire manufactured some Kenmore laundry centers. The first three digits before the period of the FULL model number (from the tag on the machine, syntax of xxx.xxxxxxxx) is a code for the manufacturer.
