Organizing the Home Design Dilemma

What’s in your office base cabinets?

I have a 12’6“ wall that I want to install built ins. i need 2 deep drawers for file storage. Assuming I use 30” cabinets, I would have 3 additional deep cabinets. One of them would store my printer. the modem is on the otherside of the room as thats where the connection is. I like symetry. That leaves me 2 deep cabinets to store stuff in. Since Im starting from scratch Id like to try and a avoid stuff getting lost in the deep cabinets.

I think I need pictures of what you are planning. First file cabinets are made for files and IMO always best as for the rest I have no idea I for sure would not put a printer in a drawer or behind doors .

Why don't you put in lateral file drawers, so they don't need to be so deep?

Many of those types of cabinets separate easily--mine has cast iron braces to hold the top on the base, so separating them to use in the same space is no big deal, IMO, and removing a door is a good solution, if you want to use the two pieces in the same room. I'd save the door, and all hardware, and keep it nearby, in case you want to restore the cabinets. The 'top only' piece makes that a moot point, so I'd choose it, and the other cabinet which most closely matches, and would be most suitable for a desk. I like option #2. You can replace the glass panels to match one or the other, and keep the originals with the door and hardware. My cabinet has replacement glass panels, done by my sister before she gave me the cabinet. ETA, as for height, you can get a wooden island stool, and cut the legs down to the correct height for the countertop. We did that once with two matching stools, when toddlers needed an interim chair height between high chair and regular chair.

I have a Vitamix in L.A. but I have a new Oster here, and it does just as well as the Vitamix for making smoothies with ice, leaving no ice particles at all. It has separate "smoothie" and "milkshake" settings and runs through a cycle of fast and slow to get the ice blended properly. You press one button and then have to wait for it to go through the cycle, and then it turns itself off. I don't know whether the old Oster blenders had these functions. It also has three manual speeds, which I find sufficient.

Thanks Theresa for the detailed input. I do think I need a console or low bookshelf. We have 4 recessed lights in the room, which are pretty darned bright but could use a lamp for decor I suppose. I think I like the desk where it is -- in a power position facing the door. I think having my back to the door is too distracting for the way I like to work. That's #1 for making the room functional. I would be OK moving the desk to the other side of the room, out of the alcove if there was a compelling reason to free up the alcove. I'm also thinking about putting in a built in shelf in the alcove (about eye level) as well as adding hifi audio to the room as well, but not sure I want to go down that rabbbit hole just yet. Thanks again for the input and I will definitely give it some more thought.

A laundry chute and a built into the wall telephone shelf, with a shelf underneath for the fat phone book. We loved to play hide and seek and go down the laundry chute to the basement. Now that would be considered too dangerous. All us cousins had houses with laundry chutes, our aunt with no kids would never let us go down hers. We couldn't understand why........

Patricia—why would you not put a printer in a drawer or behind doors? I was thinking of dbl doors and a slide out shelf for the printer. I would order file cabinet bases to accommodate the files.

AnnKH—this occurred to me last night:). I could do 30” wide file drawers and probably 15” deep.

I have a wall of built ins with lower cabinets in my home office.

I only have one drawker that holds files because I store almost everything digitally except for those items which require hard copies like Wills, death certificates, birth certificates and the equivalent.

I have one lower cabinet which houses my printer - it rolls out when I need to access it which is almost never since I do almost everything digitally. That cabinet has a electric socket so the printer is internally plugged. It is also a wireless printer so there is no need for any wires to my desktop computer. I have no idea why someone wouldn't put a printer inside a cabinet - printers are ugly - gather dust and for most people aren't used that frequently. When I need it I just pull out the cabinet as it is attached to the door - i.e. I open that cabinet door and the printer comes out for complete access. ETA If I ever needed to replace the printer it would be very simple as the printer compartment would take any size printer essentially and the plug is easy to access since I did it when I put the printer in that cabinet originally.

Everything else has pull outs so everything is completely accessible. I do have shallow drawers in what is my desk area - i.e. where my feet go.

My configuration is U-shapes and so it is against one wall and then partially wraps around.

I find the configuration totally functional since everything is accessible.

I have upper cabinets as well but I tend to store things which I don't use much since the lower cabinets can be accessed by my just rolling my office chair to them.

I like an office that functions so for me a printer that I use often behind doors is not fully functional . I think if you post a pic of the space and some drawings of what you are planning you will get better help . We have a hug office my hubby and I share we hve gone pretty much wireless but some issues arise since I have a Mac and he has a PC I think office space needs to be designed for how you use the space and also what kind of biz you are running.
