To remove a wall or not remove a wall? A Kitchen Remodel Dilemma
Comments (53)We moved to Florida from NY. The house we bought was so dark inside because of large overhangs from the roof which blocks sunlight and a large lanai running across the back wall which has a roof, no sunlight. We liked the house, but I couldn't stand how dark it was inside. Before we moved in, I call a Tubular Skylight company to get an estimate on installing them in the house. Recommendation was a large one in the kitchen ceiling ($500.00), small one in a bathroom off the hallway($250.00), a medium size in the family room off the kitchen ($325.). I can't tell you how bright this area is now. What I liked is they just go through your attic, make the openings and can position the tube (in the attic) toward south so we get bright light from sunrise to sunset. Over the past 6 yrs when we could afford more, we added to the laundry room (no windows), another bathroom (small skylight), the dining room. My house is so bright when you walk in you think there are spotlights all over the place. It took me a while, initially when the first ones were put in to get used to the high level of light. Looked like a new house! Before putting them in, we had to have our overhead lights lit all day. That costs a lot of money. I feel these tube skylights have paid for themselves in 5 yrs. Plus the house looks like a bright, inviting home. Everyone who walks in comments on how bright our home is. I would look into installing at least one large one in the kitchen, maybe a medium in the hall. So much less expensive than 'real skylights' and keeping the lights lit all day. Comments (18)Could you please post a fully measured layout? A layout with the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway labeled. A sketch of the entire floor the Kitchen is on (usually the first floor) is also very helpful. (See the "Featured Answer" in the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread for more information.) We're just guessing what will/will not fit. What can fit in a 13' deep Kitchen? 25.5" deep cabs/counters + 45" aisle (midway b/w the minimum for 1-person Kitchen & 2+ people) + TBD for island depth + 48" aisle behind the island (no seating on the island) - b/w the island and refrigerator + 32" depth for refrigerator ============ 150.5" 13' = 156" 156" - 150.5" = 5.5" deep island! This is assuming the refrigerator can be located such that the island is not a barrier between the refrigerator & sink and between the refrigerator & range. Is there a separate Dining Room elsewhere? If so, would you be willing to modify the Nook doors and extend the Kitchen into that space? Maybe, switch to a single-door? If you did that, then appliances might be able to be arranged so they don't overlap the island and then you might be able to have an island with a couple of seats. I wouldn't go from a table to a standalone island outside the Kitchen. It makes the space less flexible and looks peculiar, as if the Kitchen is missing something (it's missing the connection b/w the island and Kitchen)....See MoreKitchen remodel painting dilemmas......help!!
Comments (10)@Patricia Colwell Thanks so much! I really like the Gray Wisp. :) I also just looked at Quiet Moments. I have some existing furniture that I will have to work with, and am going to order Samplize squares to see if one of these green grays works. I haven't posted photos as to be honest, right now my home is totally torn up with boxes of packed materials, along with all of the construction tools, boxes of flooring, and cabinets stacked in every room. There just isn't much to see. Do you know off hand what Sherwin Williams colors are similar to the Gray Wisp/Quiet Moments? I've seen Sea Salt which I just read is similar but I recall it looking more blue in the space I saw it in. My contractor will be using SW paint. Have you seen Gray Wisp in North and East facing rooms? I tried samples of several of the more greige colors and they were very cold and drab in those rooms. I am not wanting a super cool effect, and would like something that leans subtle and warm. I appreciate you taking the time to offer me suggestions!...See Morekitchen remodel dilemma Fridge, shelves tile!
Comments (4)Agree with Jan. At minimum, design it so your fridge fits the space. Then ask yourself if you really need a wine fridge right next to a regular fridge. I have had and enjoyed a wine fridge previously because it keeps wines at temp. But the main thing that was great was to have the wines available for entertaining outside of the kitchen area. I’m not sure of your needs but I question how useful it will be to have them next to each other....See Moredarbuka
