Comments (20)Teresa, Shelf life of seed varies depending on how it is stored. I routinely use seed that is as old as 5 or 6 or 7 years old with really great germination rates, although at that age, the germination rate is a little lower than it was when the seed was fresh. I believe the oldest pepper seed I've ever successfully germinated was probably 7 or 8 years old. Since that is an anecdotal answer, I checked Suzanne Ashworth's book to get you a more science-based answer, and she says pepper seed will retain 50% viability for 3 years if stored in a cool, dry location. That's not bad when you consideration that the Federal Germination Standard for commmercially sold pepper seed is 55%. There are many ways to store seeds. I have so many seed varieties that I keep them in their original packets taped shut with painter's purple masking tape (because it peels off easily when I need to open a packet and take out seed) stored in gallon-sized zip-lock bags inside a large plastic storage tote that's probably about a 32-quart tote. If you have smaller quantities of seeds, you can store them in airtight containers (zip-locks, jars, plastic food-type food storage boxes, etc.) in your freezer. Cold storage of seed is the best method to use if space allows. (I can't do it.....I'd have to have a freezer just for seeds.) The second-best method is to store in airtight containers in the refrigerator. If storing at room temperature as I do, keep the seed in airtight containers in a cool, dry location where the temperature and humidity remain as stable as possible. An unheated pantry or closet is a great place to store seed. I store my seed crate in the tornado shelter/root cellar much of the time....at least when I'm not busy starting seeds. If you save your own seeds, make sure they are as dry as possible before you put them in an airtight container to store them. You want your saved pepper seeds to be so dry that one will break in half if you try to fold it in half with your fingers. If it bends but doesn't break, it needs to dry some more before you put it up for storage. Hope this info helps. Dawn...See MoreLess Than Two Weeks To Go
Comments (8)dcarch, oh yes, Tortilla Pinwheels/Roll Ups are very sophisticated lol. The garlands are finished and today I bought some items for Rocky Horror themed gift/thank you/prop bags. I bought lip shaped whistles, beaded necklaces, star shaped sunglasses, and neon colored twist shape bracelets. I was going to get feather boas but Hobby Lobby and Michaels didn't have them on sale and were way to expensive to buy for 10 people. I know tomorrow there's supposed to be a bad snowstorm, but then the temps are going to go back up into the 40's, thank goodness. Keeping my fingers crossed that from next Thursday-onward it is milder weather. Brad AKA Moonwolf...See MoreWhat did you buy this week at the grocery stores/stores
Comments (22)I still had lots of food in the house, but DH told me to go ahead and stock up since he'll probably be on the road for 5-6 weeks this time and the immediate future of our para-transit sytem is iffy at best right now due to budget cuts. (We won't know its fate until March 19. On the 22nd, we'll either have it or it's immediately gone.) So, hey, I'm no dummy. I stocked up. Trader Joes - greek yogurt eggs Cheddar cheese bacon almonds frozen haibut frozen green beans frozen mixed veggies frozen mixed peppers frozen naan butter canned diced tomatos quinoa mustard Regular Grocery Store bread Tortillas raisins black beans lentils canned tuna (my lucky day - albacore at .79 a can!) 5# chicken breasts (on sale at .99 a pound!) 2# pork bag of baking potaotes 2 cucumbers 3 onions 2 gree peppers # asparagas quart strawberries 1/2 gal milk canned mixed fruit # bananas # mushrooms garlic limes flour olive oil freezer bags pinto beans # coffee 2 boxes tea bags On the clearance shelf, we found organic pommegranate juice, V8, cherry juice and peanuts for $1.00 eash. The store isn't going to carry them anymore. So we got two each of those. And I had coupons for two free bottles of laundry soap that expire at the end of the month, so I got those now. Total - too much. OTOH, I'm set for another 4-5 weeks except highly perishable items like lettuce or milk. (Althogh I have some canned milk if I really need it.) That doesn't include the things we get for DH to take on the road as I consider his road supplies separate from my grocery budget....See MoreHatch Chili peppers
