Let's break you out of that boring beige! I suggest a soft green for your walls; the current sofa can work with that and you can add foam to the cushions to firm up the look of the seating. Below are a couple of shades you might consider for your walls. Both of the end tables are too small for the lamps and the sofa's heft. End tables should arrive 1" above or below the arms and be pulled to the front edge of the arms so no one hast to reach behind to set down a drink. When you go to buy a new area rug, here's a chart to guide you. Your area rug now is the only element that echoes any boho. I think bamboo or other fiber shades can easily remedy any Granny feeling about the window treatments. Maybe your ceiling fixture should move to the foyer to replace the standard builder's "boob" light, and you can get something more exciting for the living and dining room area.

Unfortunately I also think it’s too much stuff and too much beige. Love Celery’s staging of the mirror with lamps behind the couch, but not the vase in the middle. I would bring in some soft greens and blues (NO GRAY) to complement the plants. 🙂. Seems like a comfy, cozy space that just needs a bit of a tweak.

If asking - The white in rug and art isn't ideal with 'natural' cotton twill/duck fabric [?] Greys neither. Heavy mirror. The curtains have an interesting pattern - is it something you'd like to show closer?

The new floor will absolutely change the room - dramatically. If you’re keeping the rug, consider painting the room a soft white. Start looking for colorful throw pillows. I agree with others that said the drapes are not quite right.

Repainting the room before the carpet gets pulled up is a good idea. Reassess after the floor is installed.

I think all the throws and pile of pillows is what says grandma. One throw is enough on the couch. Put a couple pillows on the ends to spread them out.

That little square table is too small but if you want to keep it, I say paint it a color at least. Maybe you could add a larger top on it if you need to stick to a budget.

The mirror is really too big and not the right style. Maybe a rattan or such mirror instead of the clock.

I like your rug even if it’s too small. You could layer it over a larger jute rug.

And yes paint the walls a lighter brighter color.
Overall though it looks put together though and nicer than many so be proud of that! It just needs tweaking…like everyone else’s rooms here haha

The new floor will look beautiful! Get a larger rug. Replace the mirror with art. Mirror is nice ...can you use it somewhere else in your house? Some decorative objects in warm wood or rattan on the mantle.....maybe take a plant or two away. A few new pillows on the couch. Since you are doing the floor, the room just needs minor tweaks. You are doing great!

There are lots of good comments here with which I agree. White rug is too small and wrong colour/ too many throws/end table is too small/ mirror is too big and may be better over the fireplace as a leaning piece/lighten up the wall colour/ add a few brighter and more personal art work. I would also add that the sofas would appear less dated without the dust skirt IMO. I would keep the curtains as I am not a fan of blinds with strings which need to be carefully adjusted to a consistent height across several windows. With new flooring and these minor tweaks, it will be lovely! Thanks for sharing your room with us!

Beige overload, not enough texture elements and a couch that is absolutely killing the vibe you’re aiming for, both in form and sloppy smashed cushions.

My first inclination is to get you to really define what you think boho means….so while you’re waiting for the flooring, which will change the way the whole space looks, really deep dive into the terminology. Because for me, boho is defined by a mix of lots of patterns, textures and cultures…an assortment of things picked up on travels. Your rug hints at that, but it’s size wouldn’t make it my first choice.

MORE TEXTURE. Everything seems too smooth and the same. Larger rug and not that one-so many of those out there-it ads nothing to the room. NO mirror and more art. Wait till the flooring goes in as that will add some new much needed different texture.

To me, pottery and handmade is a part of casual / boho.

I had the same reaction as your son. The clock, and too many plants scattered about are what made me think grandma and is the couch slip covered? The gray throws and pillow have to go. Get something richer with a pattern perhaps. Instead of the side tables once you take the mirror down perhaps pull the couch forward a bit and add a table behind for the lamps. Keep some sort of curtain panels on your windows...this just shades trend is such a huge mistake and looks soo tacky.

Your space looks cozy. Once you get your new flooring in and perhaps a different wall color (warmer white). Looks at most of the interior posts on houzz… mostly warm whites with no yellow tones. BTW, I am on a facebook page Costal Grandma’s (wow) now that is some interior designing going on. Do you you love and get inspiration from other sources too. Take a look at Pottery Barn on line, Restoration Hardware (has a lot of what you are gong for).

Since you are changing the floor, you could consider changing your wall color to one of the ”new” beiges, or to a cream color, or a taupe - or even a grey. It really all depends on the look you would like to have.

I am not personally such a big fan of grey for walls - but sometimes it can work well in a space. And overall, grey can absolutely work with beige, tan, etc. You find these color combinations in the shore/nature color palette.

So whichever way you go with wall color, you don’t have to get rid of your green and grey accents, etc. And if you wanted to - you could further tie it all together with a rug.

Below, I just tried a grey on walls, as one example.

Here's look similar to yours and with bit of grey -- and the walls are light - I'll post to support comments about painting. Idk if absolutely necessary though... maybe it's hard to have this look with wall to wall, is all. ;)

I'm thinking your carpeting is just too close in color to your walls. In my mind it makes your room look more like an enclosed box than a room. Can you remove the carpeting and install another type of flooring? Wood perhaps? Also, your area rug seems too small and doesn't expand the visual boundary of your sitting area. Instead it makes the seating area looked hemmed in instead of part of the room.

Since it looks like you have the IKEA Ektorp sofa, and they have discontinued it and the covers, you might look on FB, CL, or Nextdoor for a replacement. There's an online company, who's name I can't recall, that only does slipcovers for IKEA furniture. maybe google.

Or you could try dying your current one. IDK what color though.

If this were my room, I’d remove the large, heavy framed mirror, and replace it with a large, colorful piece of art -remove all the small prints and maybe the clock. I actually like the wall color with your couch and think they both provide a neutral background to the more colorful and interesting elements I hope you will add. With a colorful, coordinating rug, more colorful prints in pillows and more impactful art and accessories, I think you can make your sectional work. You’ve gotten some great suggestions.

Just changing out the curtains makes a big difference! And the end tables are better because they have more visual weight. Hang in there until you get the hardwood in then please repost….it will be a beautiful room!

The natural lighting pics look much better! You may want to look into changing your light bulbs to a cooler temp so it’s not so yellow in there.

The side table looks much better too and appropriate size.
I understand the mirror reason. What if you had it vertical behind the side table in the left or even in the corner? Then stacked your art above the sofa? Maybe three over three. How many of those small prints do you have? You may need to add more or a larger vertical piece in the middle and then three on each side.

Just some ideas to keep that big mirror. It just looks to heavy over the couch imo. You could fold the throw smaller and hang over the arm. Or tuck part behind the cushion.
But coming along!

Your "update".....much better : ) less cluttered. As to mirror? Still too heavy over the sofa ; art with a view would provide a sense of depth. And some color to draw from as well. Bet me that mirror fits vertically hung, between the windows........: )

I really like the updated pics, too! In your original pics the black mirror frame seemed too dark and heavy in the room. Your reasons for having one there makes sense, but I might reconsider after you get your flooring whether a lighter frame might be better. You could do a visual by wrapping the frame (or part of it) in something easy to mold, like tissue paper taped on (you can get gold or silver tissue paper) to see what you think. If you leave it, I'd raise it a couple of inches so the bottom of the frame is fully revealed. Maybe it is but at this angle it looks like it's below the back of the sofa.

What does your son think now? Much improved. Here's a nit-pick of mine; turn the lampshade's seam to be out of the general view.

I like the changes so far. I also agree about the black - don't over do it. I also agree with comments about the mirror - it really is just too ? heavy? big? dark? all of those?

You did say you might swap it out with a piece of artwork, when you find one you love. That is a great idea! Use the mirror somewhere else in the house. The other thing you could try - take some paper and tape it over the frame to see if just painting the frame would make a big difference.

What a transformation! It looks wonderful. Only you can decide if it's too much beige... too much for me, but if you love it, keep it! I really like how you framed out the art. It really helps fill that large space in a cohesive way. The art itself seems uninspired, so I would keep your eyes open for something wonderful that you really love to hang there. It could add a lot to your already lovely room. The fireplace also looks fabulous in green!

Love the updates!!! Really pretty. Just a word about the fireplace - my sister accidentally set her house on fire when she shifted an ottoman in front of the fireplace while vacuuming and forgot to put it back. It was a gas fireplace and was on a timer, and somehow the ottoman caught on fire when the fireplace turned on. The proximity of your side chair with the throw draped on it gave me the heebee jeebies. But it looks like your fireplace is electric anyway.

The thing I would add is some lamps. I have four in my small living room alone. I love how they make a room feel so cozy with the mid level lighting.

Maybe you could add a side table and a lamp on top on the sofa side that is empty?

One thing I noticed is the gorgeous art and the lovely pewter green on your fireplace mantle.

I might conider using the oranges and greens of those tones in your art and may a throw and a couple of pillows. That would tike both sides together so well!

Wow!! you did a great job I had to go back and make sure it was the same room in the pics! for the mirror, I think its too heavy What about either a lighter silver frame mirror to pair with chandlelier ir even metal wall art?? any of these ideas appeal to you?
