Comments (41)Anyone's feelings for "The country" and any patriotism about it should be unaffected by the doings or positions of any temporary politician/office holder. The country is diverse and is the same from year to year, no matter who's in office and no matter what the government does or doesn't do. If you love the country, you should also respect the diversity of views (without needing to agree with them). That's a concept many don't understand or want to deal with. The frequency of Americans' overt expressions of patriotism, along with the same of overt religiousity, are two things about the US that many Europeans find puzzling. Most people around the world (other than political dissidents, and often even them) have affection and pride for their countries, they just don't feel the need to express them publicly or as frequently as Americans do. The flag represents everyone and every point of view, not just one's particularly favorite position....See MoreWhat are you doing on July 4th?
Comments (44)Martinca, I will never forget an article once in one of the very chi-chi decor magazines, about a woman and her decorator who remodeled her private jet(!). The line that will live in my mind was one of those obnoxious humblebrag little jewels along of the lines that the Mrs. 'just wanted a new bathroom cabinet with a drawer for her makeup on the jet'. Oooooookay ;). As for us, we had a wonderful 4th. We're down in the Keys house for the week; my daughter and her lifelong BFF (we think of her as our second girl) are down from DC-fun fact, it's been cooler in Florida than where they live!-and my DIL had the day off so was here too-son had to work. My sister came down and we went to the local parade which happens to stage and launch literally at the end of our block so a coupla folding chairs and bingo, morning entertainment. Then another friend of daughter's drove down, my dad spontaneously decided to come as well and we also had my cousin, her husband, his sister and BIL who sailed their boat down for the holiday week. Some folks went out diving while others lounged beside or in the pool. We did a simple cookout, and by early evening some of the young folks went out to party and see fireworks, the local visitors went home, my sister decided to stay overnight and a wonderful time was had by all. This house has turned out to exceed our wildest hopes as a gathering spot for holidays so another lovely memory of a perfect day is in the books....See MoreIs this OK to talk about? Happy 4th of July!
Comments (26)@Sueb20 what books are you reading? Any good? I just had a week at the beach and came home Saturday morning. D17 was able to come for a few days then went home with Dh midweek to work, and Dh had an unavoidable/unexpected business meeting in Atlanta. My sons both had to work so it ended up being a vacation mostly for myself! It was actually quite nice. The weather was absolutely perfect. Nothing exciting planned today. Another beautiful day. I was up early and took one of my dogs for a long walk. Dh is smoking a pork butt so we will have pulled pork, corn on cob and potato salad for dinner, We can walk to the end of our block to see the city fireworks tonight out over the bay. D23 flew from her home in San Diego to a wedding outside of Denver over the weekend. No line at security in SD and no flight issues on the way to Denver. They fly back to SD tonight so fingers crossed they have no problems getting home....See MoreLars
