Help! think I made a mistake with Ceiling Color & Chantilly Lace Walls

Hi! So...I feel like I made a big mistake? We had our 1st floor and into 2nd floor main hallway/foyer areas painted last year and just went with basic SW ProMar standard White in flat for the ceilings.

We are now painting 2nd floor bedrooms and just went with the same ceiling paint for the bedrooms so far. BUT we are now on the master bedroom and have Chantilly Lace on all the walls (with a black accent wall) and I'm now realizing/wondering if the ceilings will look really bad next to the Chantilly Lace walls??? There is also some vaulting going on, so I fear the contrast will be more noticeable. They haven't yet painted the ceilings so I do have time to change, but the painters said with their professional advice, we should stick with all ceilings being the same color. Do you guys agree?

Here is a pic of the ceiling, so you can see the angles/vaults... My gut says, I should go with Chantilly Lace on the ceilings, but not sure...

"basic SW ProMar standard White" I could not find this color to compare to BM Chantilly. what I would not want is the ceiling to seem dingy or heavy above the stunning Chantilly walls. Chantilly walls and ceiling are lovely and ethereal. Who says all the ceilings in the home need to be the same color? Make your master an oasis!

I agree that the ceiling color looks off with the Chantilly Lace. Budget permitting, I think a change would be good (but I don't think it looks so bad that you couldn't live with it if budget were a major concern; I think that once the room is furnished it won't seem so in your face).

If it were me, I'd probably change the wall color, as I find Chantilly Lace to be a bit stark/cold. But it's your room and your vision.

I like it. go w/the same color on the ceiling. I usually just use the base 1 white w/a bit of plain white drops added to it. it's a nice bright white.

no one has to use the same ceiling color in every room. that's silly.

If you are doing Chantilly Lace on the ceiling do it flat . I used Chantilly Lace on my walls in a flat because I have a new home and they only do flat here for new homes. If your woodwork paint is oil Chantilly Lace will turn in a year to a softer white. Satin is beautiful in oil but not in latex. Latex for moulding should be in semi gloss in my opinion. If you have another room with your gray flooring look at china white with Chantilly lace... I have a lot of gray and china white looks great.

I am adding to an old thread here but I have a similar dilemma... I am painting my new bedroom walls silver chain /harbor gray.. I was going to use simply white on ceiling and trim but I questioned the lack of brightness in simply white on my ceiling .. I have northern and eastern light and some southern but it doesn’t make it in due to a farmers porch. I was advised due to this I might want to try Chantilly lace on the ceiling and that simply white trim could work but it’s doesn’t seem so ? Maybe the gray is causing my dilemma .. i am used to working with two colors not three... I also have vaulted ceilings and a tray... on top of it I need to come up with a complimentary color for master bath.. or stay the with the same ?Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Silestone Calacatta Gold. The best location I found to purchase was Home Depot. They are not a good place to look. Better to go to local distributor in your city to see full slabs. Home Depot carries it under a different name, but if you tell them the brand Silestone they will know how to order. Home Depot will have sales of 20-25% off several times a year and they do not charge sales tax which every other location does. You can also ask Home Depot which installer they use and go there and see slabs. Good Luck.

@Patricia Colwell - Thank you for being so active on this forum, you’ve provided feedback/input on almost all of my posts. We were leaning towards 5000K for lighting, which appears to be right in the middle, helping create a modern/clean feeling… any cooler, it would become institutional and cold, I assume it would start causing colors to go warmer than intended… you disagree?

Thank you for all the replies! so first, @cawaps i shouldve clarified thay they havent painted the ceilings yet 😀 and i have no idea what color the ceiling paint is. & i know its not for all, but i love Chantilly Lace so definitely will stick with it for the walls.

@Beth H. :i think you’re saying go for the same coordinating Chantilly Lace ceiling? or are you giving me a custom formula? i’ll be buying from BM…can i just tell them that & they’ll Understand ?

we did the other BRs in that SW ceiling bc we had leftovers from before and figured save the $$ & in those rooms the ceilings are not as ”noticeable” as this Master so they look fine.

im leaning towards running out tomorrow to get ceiling flat in Chantilly Lace or Beths magic formula

Paint the ceiling Chantilly Lace in flat finish. Once I choose a white, I use it for all surfaces to be painted white...just use the appropriate finish.

G. lol. no magic formula. I just use the base 1 white (have them add a couple squirts of plain white into the can and mix. no other tints or colors) I use this because it's a plain, bright white.

or, just use the Chantilly, but you may have to do a diff sheen. I use flat or eggshell on the ceiling. eggshell on walls.

I vote for Chantilly Lace in flat for the ceilings. We have Chantilly Lace on all our trim in semi gloss and Chantilly Lace on the ceilings in flat and I love the way it looks on the ceilings. Good luck!

Thx for the input so far & think sold on flat Chantilly lace for ceilings in this room.

So…another question. Last room - it’s west facing with south & west windows…a lot of afternoon sun light.

I wanted this room to have ever so slight off-white contrast to the Chantilly Lace trim and thought maybe White Dove. The wall sample looks too yellow to me. I considered Paper White, Cloud Cover and White Wisp, but also taking note of Lori’s rule of at min difference of 0.2 chroma with trim color (Chantilly Lace).

Another important note is that the hallway just outside which is the majority of the main foyer and entryway is in SW Crushed Ice so also don’t want it to clash with it or even look too similar.

Any suggestions?

Don't use white dove. I painted my walls with it and it was hella-dingy! repainted w/Simply White. so much better. (I also did my trim w/it) you will see a natural difference between the eggshell and the semi gloss finish. both of these are Simply White, but the trim looks brighter. it's just because of the reflective quality in the finish.

You could try White Heron. Cheating Heart is another great color if you want some real contrast

U mentioned Crushed Ice. I have the walls in the kitchen painted Light Pewter. it's the same ballpark as crushed ice.

you can see it here on these two walls. Again, Simply White on all of that trim. (cabinets were supposed to be that shade but they did a lacquer conversion and went one shade whiter, I think) IRL they look identical.

Another vote for flat Chantilly lace on the ceiling in your bedroom.

What are you labeling as wall and ceiling? With these angled ceilings, the angled parts can be considered as ceiling or wall. Not as big of a deal when you are using the same color! I would probably only do the flat finish on the top rectangular flat section.

About the other room - a southern exposure emphasizes yellow which is why White Dove is looking a little yellow. In a lot of rooms White Dove would look slightly gray. I have used Paper White in a southwest facing room which got pretty intense sunlight part of the day. It is very slightly blue and gray which should work, give it a try. It's a very subtle color that does look different depending on the time of day. I loved it in my room and would use it again.
