Comments (23)swhite - Thanks! I know what you mean about the visualizing thing. The island top measures 42" x 89". 10 1/2" of that length is overhang for the barstools which some would say is not enough, but it's been plenty for us. Our fridge is a full size KitchenAid. Like you I didn't want to give up space for a CD model. We made it look built in by making the countertop deeper in between the fridge and ovens. I love having the extra deep countertop there for rolling out dough, baking cookies, etc. Our trim carpenter made a trim piece around the fridge opening to make it "look" like a snug fit, but there's really plenty of room inside. Hope that makes sense.:-)...See MoreSemi-modern bathroom.. Tile is almost finished!!! Beautiful!!!
Comments (64)Yup, that's right. Blanco. They sent me a few samples of all the whites they have (no charge!) and I picked the truest, whitest white... the others were greyer, or bluer. I also wanted a more monolithic look, not the varied look that seems more common in glass mosaic installations, where there are irridescent and slightly different whites mixed in. Most places only sell those mixes, I found. Be aware that they do take on a cooler, bluer tone when set in thinset that's called white (but actually grey). If keeping it as white as possible is important to you, find a true white thinset. I'm now happy with the color, but was bummed at first because it didn't go with my original design palette (creamy whites and tan/neutrals). But the new palette works too!...See MoreHow's the In-Home Camping Going?
Comments (19)Our cabinets and appliances are coming in the beginning of March. We listed our old kitchen on Craigslist assuming it would take a couple of weeks to sell- we had 15 offers in 6 hours so demo began a little sooner than anticipated. We are one week without a kitchen. I live in a great neighborhood and my friends have been amazing- we have a standing "reservation" every Wednesday with one family for dinner; another one who works gave me a house key to cook at her home while she is at work; Sunday night dinners with another family etc. My kids think it is great. My temporary kitchen is in the dining room with a microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker. The dishes are all stacked on the bakers rack. We are fortunate to have a sink and refrigerator in the wet bar and I had my DH rig up the dishwasher so I do not have to hand wash anything. We live in FL so it is always grilling weather and we also have a side burner out there. It has been an adventure and we are trying to embrace it with a postive spirit! To get the kitchen of my dreams a little sacrifice is worth it for the end result. I hope to have a functional kitchen by the end of March. We are DIY and DH is going to take a week from work to make it happen....See MoreKitchen for our 1909 Craftsman -- almost done pictures
Comments (42)Thanks for the feedback. The landscaping happened three years ago, but I still love it (my wife has a more love/hate relationship with the garden). We've never spent as much time in the back as we would like, but I think that's going to change now that it's more integrated with the house. Certainly our almost three year old is now able to go out back on his own and we can keep an eye on him. I was preparing his lunch today and he asked to go out. When I called him in for lunch he had tomato all over his face from picking the cherry tomatoes off the vine (it's either that or the berries. and in another month the figs). It doesn't get much better than that. Here's the view out the open french doors this afternoon from the prep area. circuspeanut: Yeah, when we decided to switch the large pendant for a ceiling light I wanted to get a matching one from Cherry Tree Designs and was very bummed to find out they don't make them any more. I'm just glad we got our lights back in March rather than waiting until they were ready to be installed last month. We might get one now from Arroyo Craftsman, which has similar designs in metal. As far as the green trim, early on we though that having stained trim in the kitchen might compete with the cabinets, so decided for painted trim (the trim is fir and the cabinets cherry). When the breakfast room trim was finished it was so lovely I really regretted that choice, but the kitchen trim was already primed. My wife and I got many paint samples and considered many different directions for the kitchen trim before picking the color, but in the end we're very happy with it....See MoreMark Bischak, Architect
