Someone asked on another thread if I'd posted pics of our finished house, and I realized I had not.

Pre-landscaping and before the grass turned green. I really need to snap some new ones of after the flower beds were done!

Hope you caught these persnickitydesign posts: "It was pretty much a full time job (plus overtime) and it still took a year and a half for me to get everything purchased & everyone lined up. ...One of my oldest & dearest friends' DH owns the HVAC company. He did our house at cost. Another owns the company that did our fireplace and garage doors. He also worked at the lumber yard for years and gave us the names of many of the subs that we ended up using. ...our friends came by to help us out and worked for free" "Our permits were $433. We're on county water & sewer and did have to pay a tap-in fee of $1067. There were no charges for the gas and power." "We are fortunate enough to live in an area where the cost of living (and cost to build) is extremely low. Plan prices are not mentioned. Also, keep in mind the year of the build--2008. There was a wee bit of a recession going on then, centred on the collapsing housing market. Trades were desperate for work, suppliers for customers. I had the fortune to build in earlier declines. With cash in hand, you were like a god.Now, not so much.

lala & Toni, I'll try to answer all of your questions. We decided to go with a wood burning firepit. We were heavily leaning towards gas (and had plans for the pb to run the gas line) but then we spoke to someone who convinced us that releasing gas for an undetermined length of time, directly into the air, was like opening a valve and watching dollar signs disappear. So, after much debate we decided to go with wood. Which we can most likely get for free and we can control our long term spend. I didn't have any concrete numbers from people of how much their gas bills went up, but I was afraid to try it on my own! Then came the debate of do we build it ourselvesÂ My husband & a buddy of his had plans to build it but after discussing it with them, we realized that my "perfectionism" wouldnÂt allow them to make any mistakes on it.. so we hired a contractor. And, I can say that after watching the guys measure the stones, cut them, re-measure them, cut them, rearrange them etc.. it was quite a meticulous process. IÂm sure given the right amount of time we could have done the project but, it took 2 guys the better part of 2 full days just to build it for us. ItÂs likely it would have taken my husband over 2 weeks to get it to look that good. The bottom is lined with sand, then fire brick and itÂs all canted towards the middle to ensure that it drains properly (not onto our patio or into our pool). The stones we chose are EP Henry, double sided Coventry stones. So, if you have the patience and the equipment, IÂm sure you could build it on your own!

Ok, I'll try to hit the questions I am seeing here. - Regarding door/drawer spacing for inset doors/drawers: I took the finished door/drawer opening on the cabinet and made sure to allow for an 1/8" gap when cutting doors and drawer fronts to fit in the opening. One of the learning curves for me building cabinets was understanding how even a 1/16" difference is visible. This was a difficult concept to grasp for someone who is used to doing rough framing (building decks and framing walls) where being 1/4" off is no big thing. Also, it was very important to make sure everything was perfectly square. Keeping things square and careful measurement meant everything fit when it was time for assembly. Minuscule adjustments were made with a hand planer. - Attaching drawer fronts was a little tedious. I wound up tipping the cabinet on it's back, and simply laid the drawer front in the opening (on the drawer box.) Once I got it positioned, it got clamped and screwed in with two temporary screws from inside the drawer. When it was time for final install after paint, I simply removed the temporary screws, drilled proper counter sunk holes, added some wood glue and the screwed them in from the inside. Drawer pulls were also installed from the inside which also provided more attaching points. I highly doubt these drawer fronts will ever come loose. - Installing doors and gapping them was pretty similar to the drawer fronts. One trick that I figured was using a finish nail like a shim; their diameter was about the exact gap I was looking for. I'd place them loose between the door and cabinet, position the door (which moved easily along the nails like rollers), clamped the door and screwed them to the hinges. I used an old school hinge to keep the traditional look but they were slightly adjustable for final install. - Regarding the lower cabinet doors being used as a drawer front and how I attached them: This was done just like the drawer fronts, except I simply used more screws to attach them from the inside. This, plus sufficient wood glue, held them in place just fine. Also, keep in mind, the drawer boxes themselves are hard maple....nice and secure for the screws to hold to. The drawer slides are also effortless so there really is no torque on the fronts when pulling them open. I was concerned about this, but even fully loaded, they open effortlessly and my concerns are assuaged. I'm confident they won't come apart. buddy mo - I had to go look at the extra box of tiles to see what kind it was. Funny how quickly you forget some details once it's over. Anyway, the box says 3x6 Tumbled Marble Chiaro by PGM Products. I think we got those tiles at Lowe's. The sink faucets are Danze Opulence in stainless finish, and we bought those from FaucetDirect.com. I love the stainless finish, it's beautiful and stays clean looking, doesn't smudge or show prints. Rhome - Congrats on the marriages! I have a feeling that's right around the corner for us too... Thanks again everyone for the kind words! And, yes, the baby is the best gift of all.:-)

Thank you both.:-) The floors are white oak, 4" planks, site finished. The stain color is chestnut with a satin finish.

Your house is BEUUUUTIFUL! Love that stair case and the FP surround and the laundry room and the master shower and tub and and and. LOL It's just awesome.

Your house is gorgeous! Congratulations! The staircase and the runner on it is stunning! The floors are beautiful, the kitchen too, I love it!

Very nice build. Must be a relief to be at least somewhat settled in. I hope to be in a similar situation in about a month. I also like the runner you used, your staircase is very similar to one of mine.

Thanks for posting these great pics! We are just starting and it is so helpful to see pics of beautiful completed homes. Your entire home is great but I esp love the wood floors, staircase and runner and traditional cabs.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks for posting! Love your kitchen, Fireplace, paint colors, tile.. I could go on and on!

My layout for my kitchen is similar.. do you find the island blocks your work paths much?

Tinker - I love my kitchen layout and have found it to be very functional. I haven't found the island to block paths at all. We have a large family and cook a lot, and even when there are several of us in there working we're never tripping over one another. One person can be doing prep at the island sink, one person can be cooking at the stove, and one person can be doing clean up or getting drinks while a couple might be sitting at the barstools visiting. We have about 46-48" clearance around the island which leaves plenty of room for someone to pass by. I love that traffic(namely kids) can come and go through the kitchen without coming in the corner where someone is cooking.

Lovely pictures, and lovely house!

There is a house almost just like this on Schumacher's website. Obviously not as nice :) but same outside design with the two gables on the front and porch and all. It's nice to see a similar house so I can imagine in my head what it could look like.

Great job. I love all the trim work.

Thanks for posting it per my request. I have seen glimpses of it already but this is great to see the whole house. I love the colors you have chosen, the hardwood floors, stairs, bathrooms and the kitchen is to die for! The exterior pics are great too! I am at work now and will look at it in detail when I get home:)

mitri89--What are the dimensions of your island? I took a picture of it with me today to meet with my builder and said "I want mine just like this!" It's so nice to be able to see pictures because it's very hard for me to visualize what it's going to look like when it's just an ink-drawn rectangle on paper! Thanks so much for sharing!
And thanks for posting your flooring type and stain color! I wasn't sold on oak, but the stain you picked makes it look amazing!
One more question---is your refrigerator a regular sized one or CD? I refuse to pay more for a CD and give up space, so I'm trying to figure out what to do. Too many decisions!

swhite - Thanks! I know what you mean about the visualizing thing. The island top measures 42" x 89". 10 1/2" of that length is overhang for the barstools which some would say is not enough, but it's been plenty for us.

Our fridge is a full size KitchenAid. Like you I didn't want to give up space for a CD model. We made it look built in by making the countertop deeper in between the fridge and ovens. I love having the extra deep countertop there for rolling out dough, baking cookies, etc. Our trim carpenter made a trim piece around the fridge opening to make it "look" like a snug fit, but there's really plenty of room inside. Hope that makes sense.:-)

Thanks Glenster - The Granite is Giallo Ornamental, and the cabinets are SW Dover White, sprayed on laquer.

The ceilings and walls are the same color. The way the light plays off of it makes it look different sometimes. It's SW Tobacco Road, the Duron formula. You have to ask for it, as it's not on the chips.

Please tell me what kind of pendant lights you have in your kitchen. I ordered some from Pottery Barn and they finally came in today and they are butt ugly! Need to return them and start from square one. Not happy. :0(
