The Finishing Touch: Trimwork
I am so sick of hearing people touring houses on home shows saying "LOVE the crown moulding." I'm not dissing crown moulding, but it's not that big a deal, and it's cheap and easy to do. You can do SO much more with a good carpenter and a few pieces of wood!
I'm a trim freak, probably because my brother is a carpenter and goes over the top in almost all of his projects with extensive trimwork. I feel I should add that as a disclaimer!
Attention to the trimwork can add architectural interest to a wall, enhance built-ins, make a window pop, give a sense of proportion and geometry, provide depth to ceilings and doorways, and always make a home look truly finished. In these days of mass-manufactured McMansions popping up, trim is a great way to add some Arts and Crafts detailing to your home. It's custom work that is well worth the price tag.

Paint is an inexpensive way to make trim really stand out. The charcoal color around the windows accentuates the panes and puts the view into focus.
Check out the beautiful wall on the right. The trimwork's geometery mimics the windows on the adjacent wall.
A true Craftsman designer knows the importance of trimwork on a staircase. I believe this is maple wood.
Long rectangular boxes exaggerate the height of the room and pair well with the built-ins opposite them.
Here the trimwork helps to delineate the rooms but keeps the view open.
Check out the walls, ceiling, stained glass windows and doorways here. No surface was ignored. I don't see a bit of drywall here!
The light colors help texture, structure, and the dark trim around the windows and doors be the stars of this space.
