Don't put flowers too close to the mailbox. I had a gorgeous cloud of apple-blossom miniature climbing roses around mine, until I saw my mail carrier dodging bees one Saturday, doing an impressive fling-slam-flee maneuver with my mail that was so smooth it was obvious mine wasn't the only mailbox surrounded by bees. I never thought about it before -- the bees are quiet by the time I get my mail, but they're at their quickest during peak delivery hours. I cut the roses back and he actually came up to the door to thank me the next weekend. I have a gargoyle on the mailbox now instead.

Put your house numbers on the curb for emergencies. The "decorator numbers" can go on the house. Best of both worlds.

A dog water basin for the neighborhood dogs is asking for trouble including litigation. I wouldn't do it. Plus, dogs that stop for a drink are likely to leave a calling card. Get my drift.
