Looking for a 'new' neutral that is not beige-based
Comments (14)Farrow & Ball paint is pricey but will have that "I can't quite figure out what it is" look that you desire. French Gray and Blue Gray are beautiful "neutral" warm grayish colors that change with the light. I think you would like them. Others to look at in various color families include Hardwick White and Stone White (don't let the names fool you, these are not "white;" a friend of mine who sells art uses Hardwick White in the art gallery); green family Vert de Terre, Ball Green and Lichen; dark neutral Charleston Gray; warm Fawn; warm and stony Light Gray and Elephant's Breath; and warm London Stone. If you want less of a neutral and more recognizable color, try exquisite Teresa's Green, a pale robin's-egg-like blue-green that changes hue with the light. There are more worth considering... Find a favorite F&B color and you will never tire looking at it!...See MoreBleeker beige vs Shaker beige vs Manchester tan
Comments (7)I have Shaker Beige in all my hallways, staircase, kitchen, family room and one of the bedrooms. I don't find it blah. It works with the color schemes in all these rooms and with different flooring (tile or carpet). I like that it looks a little different at different times of day, or even in the different walls of the room depending on the direction of the light. I would say that it predominantly an orange beige, rather than a green or pink beige. Never muddy, which I think is a green beige. My home's windows face east and west. That said, do some boards and see if you like it in different lights....See Morelove beige buying a new house, are tan/beige neutrals dated?
Comments (19)I've been on the prowl for paint colors for all the rooms in the Victorian we recently bought, and have been looking at lot of colors and collecting swatches and brochures and stuff - it's fascinating to see all the nuances in the neutrals these days - the 80s/90s beiges really sucked. I hate all the gray (though it's lovely when it's on the outside of the house), and while I'm not a huge fan of beige/taupe/tan (wouldn't jive with my house, anyway), I'm loving the matchups of creamy off-whites and whites for walls/trim - going to do this for the attic. Otherwise, cool interesting not-gray colors for the rooms (and probably wallpaper). Don't ever feel like you have adhere to trends. If you don't like gray, don't do gray. No one is doing paisley wallpaper anymore, but I'm going to because I want to. Do the beige and screw the trends and those folks that are all about "resale value" and thinking you need to design your house for the next buyer rather than yourself....See MoreBeige vinyl windows and plantation shutters--I hate beige! Comments (14)Random thoughts: - The outside looks neat as a pin. Clearly this house has been well cared-for, though I agree with the above poster that the landscaping is kinda dull. - The wall paper may or may not be a problem. When I moved into my current house, I immediately renovated the two bathrooms ... I pulled down the wallpaper from the large master bath in about 15 minutes, but I spent three days of misery in the similar-sized hall bath. Why? The walls in the master bath were "primed" before the wallpaper went up. ALWAYS prime your walls before painting or wallpapering. ALWAYS. More to the point: I hope your walls were primed. - I do like plantation shutters (and intend to have them in my new house), but they don't seem right for your 1970s ranch, and I don't think I'd like them in beige. I agree you should take them out ... but sell them on eBay or Craigslist. They're worth money. Don't bother painting them ... if I were buying, I wouldn't mind painting them. - As for the beige trim, it will be a monster to paint (or a monster-sized bill, if you pay someone to do it), but it's not hard work ... just tedious work. Since you're talking about color preferences, not functional needs, you don't have to do it all at once. - While you're painting things, I'd look at those dark brown gutter spouts. They seem to stand out in a bad way. - I like white-painted brick, and I think this house would look lovely if the wood trim above the windows were a light-to-midtone blue. - I'd think lose that wrought iron railing on the front ... maybe. I don't particularly like it, but it does fit with the house....See Morehappyleg
