Are the walls all perfectly straight? If not, with large format tile that is what you will get, same with the tub. The same with the door way, the tile setter is not a magician. I see nothing glaring as a mistake, nothing awful, appears to be no lippage.

Did you have a concern about the floors being level? That looks like a level in the last pic.

It seems like they’ve split the difference between lining the tile up with the tub vs door. If they went perfectly with tub, the door would look worse, and vice versa. I’d probably put a rug against the tub and live with it. Shims for vanity would not bother me as long as it ends up level. I do think the quarter sized hole filled with grout would bother me though. I bet there’s a better way to fill that that would blend in more. This coming from somebody renovating a home that is nothing but crooked, sloped, and wavy. :) I realize that I never noticed these imperfections until I had to work around them, and I’ll stop noticing them again once I move on to something else.

I strung the bathtub it’s out an 1/8” in the center not a half inch, if they rotated all the tile in the bathroom a few degrees and shifted everything over 6” I think it would’ve been unnoticeable. And you wouldn’t have pieces of tile going from 0 to an inch over 2 feet that are cracked

Now you are showing different pictures. But if you do not want the tiles installed square to each other but skewed to wall conditions that needs to be discussed prior in my opinion as that is not the correct way to do the work. Did you discuss the layout with him or ask to discuss as he got into the work? Would you have paid him more money if he wanted more money for the extra layout and work involved?

IMO pretty obvious the wallsa re not staright or the tubis not but the tiles are so I think they did the best they could with what they had to work with

A framing square works fine for small spaces like the alcove vanity in your photo. But a square is too small for laying out walls or for tile layouts.

It is obvious that the walls are not square. There is only so much the tile setter can do given the room. You hired him to lay tile, not to rebuild walls.

You wanna rebuild the bathroom, or accept the layout as being done 85% as best as could be planned by your chosen tiler, with the existing conditions? How much did you pay for the bath job to be done? 5K? 10K? 20K?

The way you disguise out-of-square walls, is that you do NOT run the edge of the tile along them, as this tiler did. You shift the pattern over a couple inches, and then cut the tiles on a bit of a slant, to hug the wall. No slivers, no widening grout lines, and you don't notice it unless you measure each tile to compare.

The tiles that are cracked or have divots in them should NOT have been used, they should have been discarded. That's poor workmanship.

Issue 1: Chipped tile - I had 1700 sf of tile in my last home and did not have any quarter or even dime sized chips anywhere in my home after 20 years of use. I would not be okay with the chips. (Red Circle)

Issue 2 - layout (Red Arrow)

The installer is paid to install the tile, and I have found they generally go with the layout that is the least work and uses the least amount of materials. I always determine the correct layout before any installation. I use graph paper, draw the room and then use tracing paper and draw the tile grid. Then I move the tracing paper over the floorplan to determine the best layout where I don't have slivers of tile somewhere.

In your case it looks like the entry of the room is just a hair wider than three tiles, enough that the trim isn't covering the grout line on the upper right top picture. I would have started with a 1/2 tile along that wall.

Issue 3:

Is the top of the vanity level? (Front to back, side to side and corner to corner). Did all the legs need shimmed or just one side? If the top is level and all the legs were floating and needed shimmed the same amount they installed the vanity too high. If the top is level and only the legs on one end needed shimmed the floor is sloping. Some slope is expected and older homes sometimes have a fair amount of slope and it isn't an issue. Excessive slope can indicate a bigger issue - joists that are failing or an issue with the foundation. . . If you have a big slope you may want to find out why. Not a flooring guy's area of expertise - need a GC. I own a 70 year old home. If I found a slope bigger than 1" over 20' I would get it checked out. I did have have to shim the back of my bathroom vanity to create a level countertop - one shim here and there across the back to lift it < 1/8th of an inch - not a pile of shims.

You paid for quality work and should expect quality work.

Now that it is all done, you may want to weigh your options:

Fight to get the issues resolved.

Fight for money back (did you pay them in full yet?) and live with the issues or

Don't fight and just accept mediocre work. (no stress)

I might opt for option 2 with the exception of having the vanity reasonably level (cant have water pooling at the back or side - don't want my tube of lipstick or mascara rolling to the edge or off the edge).

I would take this as a lesson learned and know that no one else walking through your home will notice the chips or the alignment or look under the vanity at the legs.

If you think about the homes you visit (homes owned by your friends and siblings) what do you really notice - they have dozens of issues that they know about, but are small enough or insignificant enough that no one else ever sees it. Spend the savings on something wonderful for you and hubby. When you are 60 you will know that the happy memories that you have are so much more important than what your tile looked like 30 or 40 years ago.

when they installed the vanity the feet were floating and it’s not level when I asked them to fix it they “shimmed” the feet down and filled about an 1/8” with wood putty just to hide the bad shim job.

That is an acceptable job. The floor looks like it is wildly out of level so you have a right to complain about that IF floor leveling was stipulated in the agreement/ contract.

You have to lay on your belly to see the leg spacers. Notice how the edges of the vanity are raw unfinished particle board. You can't see those either without laying on the floor. Does that bother you?

I would have avoided vanities with legs for the obvious reason--out of level floor. And cleaning. It is so much easier to with a solid toe kick and the toe kick could have been scribed to the floor to hide the necessary vanity shims.

So they built that frame and set the vanity on it. Why? Why would they invest more time, labor & materials to do that?

If you don't like the shims, just get taller legs and replace the old legs.

Licensed contractor that sent unsupervised apprentices out to do the work. Sorry, I have no patience for this level of incompetence. Sorry you are going through this.

Sorry you're not pleased with this outcome. Yes, it could have been done better and was probably a challenge given the tile selection. I see only a tub in your pics, what is at the other end of the room, a shower? If you're not in a position to have the floor all ripped out and redone (yikes!) consider some fixes to clean up and disguise the things that annoy you most. The paint job on the baseboards could have been done better, and the perimeter of the room could be cleaned up with trim, such as 3/4" round trim added at the baseboard floor. It's extreme and not the best fix but doing this would lessen the appearance of the sliver tile pieces there by the vanity. Probably easier if you can put something there (sliver tile wall) since it's an empty space, maybe a narrow storage unit perhaps with artwork above it? There are trim piece products for tubs you could look into, these are used at the base to finish off the floor edge and might cover some of that grout. You're in the club with many of us who live and learn from this stuff, and I'm grateful to come here and get opinions and ideas.

Cracks, dings, and chipped tile are never acceptable in a new floor installation.
