Annoying ads
Comments (13)Once and for all: How to stop the iVillage ad onslaught. First we need to understand how it's done: iVillage doesn't bother to try and buy ads directly from all the various companies that show up on the pages of GW. Instead they use large ad-service agencies like doubleclick, akamai and pointroll. You can visit some of these sites if you'd like to see who's behind the ads. http://www.akamai.com http://www.doubleclick.com/us http://pointroll.com This makes it easy to block out all or almost all of the ads very easily, just block the originating sites. Right now all the ads on GW come from: http://amch.questionmarket.com http://a820.g.akamai.net http://iv.doubleclick.net http://i.ivillage.com http://m.2mdn.net http://tste.ivillage.com http://img-cdn.mediaplex.com http://ads.vmirror.com http://cmhtml.ivillage.overture.com http://ads.pointroll.com The Universal Solution. This will work on Windows systems for all browsers; IE, FireFox and Netscape. The Windows operating system provides a system-level method to block specific IP addresses before they even get to the browser. To effect this solution you need to edit a Windows system file called hosts. This file is located in the directory: Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 2K: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 98: C:\WINDOWS Open the file in Notepad. Cut the following from this post and paste it to the end of the file. 127.0.0.1 amch.questionmarket.com 127.0.0.1 a820.g.akamai.net 127.0.0.1 iv.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 i.ivillage.com 127.0.0.1 m.2mdn.net 127.0.0.1 tste.ivillage.com 127.0.0.1 img-cdn.mediaplex.com 127.0.0.1 ads.vmirror.com 127.0.0.1 cmhtml.ivillage.overture.com 127.0.0.1 ads.pointroll.com Edit each entry so that there is a tab between the IP address 127.0.0.1 and the URLs. Save the file and you're finished. Close and re-open your browser and all the ads will be gone. Unfortunately, iVillage may in the future buy ads from a new source. In this event the new ad source will have to be added to the list. The IE solution. Most of the ads are placed using Java$cript. You can remove the more offensive ads in IE with the browser settings. You can't however remove them all. To improve GW using IE do the following: From the menu select Tools -> Internet Options -> Security and click on Custom Level. Scroll down to the end of the list and you'll see an entry for Scripting. Disable all the sub-entries. Now select the tab labeled Privacy. In the bottom of the box that appears check on the option to block pop-ups. I recommend you also click on the button Advanced and select the option to block Third-party Cookies. NOTE: By disabling Scripting you will also effect the way other websites behave. You may need to get used to switching scripting on and off as desired. That's why this is the least desirable of these various options. The FireFox solutionThis is an excellent choice -- it's the fastest......See More10 things that annoy us about the holidays
Comments (39)None of that list annoys me. I love the Christmas season. Like Rusty, the only thing that I dislike about this time of year are the miserable wretches that want to put a damper on everyone elses fun. If they are not into it, fine. Everyone is not the same. But really, keep your negative attitude to yourself. What type of person sees people being excited to celebrate something and feels the need to try to ruin it? I hate when people tell me its too early for ME to listen to the music, that MY decorations are too much, that I spend too much on gifts for people that I WANT TO give gifts too. I mean, not even a gift for them! A few people have asked me what I plan to get for SO this year. I always get lots of things. The total for his gifts is usually between 1 and 2 thousand dollars. Not much to me,given the circumstances. He is so good to me all year, so when I get my profit sharing check at work every December,I spend most of it on his Christmas. How in the name of Bob Crachit is someone gonna tell ME that I spend too much money on him? Or that I listen to the music too early? Or anything like that. No ones asking them to chip in for the gifts or to tune their own radios to the music. What's their problem? Anything to be negative. Anything to be contrary. Anything to counteract the joy and excitement of the season. That's pitiful. I remember the year that an older kid at school had told one of my nieces (5 years old at the time) that Santa wasn't real. She was devastated. That kid was a miserable creature, who thoroughly enjoyed seeing her enjoyment ruined. Luckily, her parents were able to convince her otherwise and the magic lasted for a few more years for her. So yeah. My list would be fuddy duddies. Oh, and white/clear Christmas lights. What's the point? Although,in fairness, they dont really ANNOY me. They are pretty..I guess it just seems like a missed opportunity..........See MoreDo you have your Federally Compliant Driver's License yet? LADIES!
Comments (74)I am, obviously, in Ohio. I got m EDL last year, in April. I do have a passport, but I took EVERYTHING that was listed, including the registrars copy of our marriage license, NOT the fancy church one, as it instructs us. I had everything in a manila envelope. The lady only looked at a few things, but mainly used the passport. Then was required to have someone else come and verify her work. DON'T assume that a passport alone will be enough. My DH's was refused. And he had to have verification of most everything also. He went the next day to a different office, and they accepted his passport. I asked why it hadn't been accepted at the office I went to, and the explanation was that if anything had been keyed in wrong, they couldn't change it, that it would kick it out of the system for 24 hours. I asked both people who helped me, separately, and got the same answer. My girlfriend has been widowed twice and divorced once. She had to find all of the documentation from all of them. I do not plan to fly again, but can still be called for jury duty to a federal building, and you never know, I may have to fly again, even if I don't want to. At some point, I will probably let my passport expire, but who knows. I need to check and see when it expires!...See Moreagressive drivers
Comments (59)Out main freeway and the only one in a good part of thr state is the same one Elmer wrote about I-5 It’s usually 3 lanes, often only 2 in some rural areas and 4 thru parts of urban area. I’m mostly on the 3 lane sections and it is clogged with truck traffic. Usually bumper to bumper in the right lane, then the middle lane is filled with trucks that think the right lane is too slow for them, so the are technically ”passing” the trucks in the right lane but they never move right ( or don’t for miles and miles). Both lanes are often so clogged that it’s not safe to try to squeeze in, or if you do, you are walled in on 3 sides by big rigs. Often they are driving an ok speed, but our feeways have lots of hlls, so they slow on the hills. Woe be to the drivers who want to try to get into the left lane to get out of the clog because it is filled with cars who think they are entitled to drive there exclusively because they are going over the limit. They never move right and if you get in their way they will tailgate even if there is no break in the trucks for you to move over and get out of their way. And I’m not talking about me going slow in the left lane; it doesn’t matter how fast you go, the aggressive drivers want no one in front of them....See Morearcy_gw
