Did rabbits destroy plant?

I have six little lime hydrangea in front of my house they were planted two summers ago. They actually or growing perfectly and the winter came and I can't say it was the winter but I noticed it seems like the rabbits did a number on it. All the Brown Bark of the stems are gone like they tape completely It Off. I am living in New York and I'm not sure if the rabbits destroy them. I only see a tiny bug on one of or a couple of the branches that are still Brown but the white then have nothing. I may have to replant new ones and was thinking about the little lime punch hydrangeas. Do they do as well as those little limes? Is there anything that will keep the rabbits away from my hydrangeas?
