Firstly, your room is beautiful, serene and live able just as it is! I love every single thing about it. My suggestions for it--- although you know I have different inclinations with respect to color and accessorizing :) ----are these: Move the table back behind the long axis of the sofa. Do a few taller, substantial lamps (maybe with metal or ceramic bases as a contrast to the wood? Or perhaps blue and white Chinese export porcelain ginger jar lamps in a large scale?) on it that would give task reading light to someone on the sofa at night or on a dark day. And have you tried the small chairs on top of that table? As to the corner, I agree that the bookcase from your former house is too formal (but it is completely fabulous!). The sewing table is too small. We had a similar problem situation in Florida. The kids need a computer, but they also need, or will need, a place to write as they're reading on the Internet, particularly for essays and term papers. One kid with schoolbooks needs the same amount of room as three kids :) We solved this with a custom table (not expensive, there are places you just pick the top and legs, and you could do a distressed (or not) gray or white or taupe or a wood of your liking. It was NARROW-- about 20 inches--- and very wide, so they could all sit in a row or one could spread out the books laterally. You could then use two or three of those armless blue leather chairs from your previous home, if they would fit, or get inexpensive leather parsons chairs if they won't. I love the pale rug! A "winter" rug with blues and reds might be a nice change....maybe a very worn out Persian. Finally, you can get a custom runner from Maslan or Stark carpets. I would not have separate ones sewn together as they will wear differently at the seams. Stark has some lovely patterns in blue and white or cream that look sort of rustic but not at all country, iykwim.

The cabinetry is beautiful. And I love what you have done with it. Some books, hardcover, mixed with decorative items. That's exactly what I wanted to do, but it is what it is. My husband simply will not part with his books. Even ratty paperbacks. He grudgingly said he would allow me to replace them with new versions, even though they're not as good (to him.) he likes the actual volumes that he has read and handled. It really bugs me, because the number of novels he has read in the last three years can be counted on one hand, whereas I am an avid reader. A lot of those books he won't give up are ones that I bought, back in the day, and I have read but he has not. Really? "Scenes of Clerical Life," by George Eliot? I replaced every single one of those books with the Kindle version, but that is not acceptable, either. I can't do anything with him. He's not a hoarder, but he sure has trouble throwing things out. Hi, I have been lurking here and figured I would give some feedback also. When my children were little we had two sofa'a. The first was a brushed velvet in a deep plum color from Scandanavian Galleries (long time gone now). The fabric was awesome and hid everything, no matter how many times the kids were sick or the cat slept on it. Then we had a beige sofa in a cotton fabric, which also held up well, but was washable. Now I have a dark expresso leather sofa, which was a huge mistake with 3 cats. Despite having no claws in their front legs, they have destroyed the sofa ($$$ from Stickley) with tiny scratches all over it from chasing each other. My other sofa is a cream colored chenille. I can honestly say I miss the cream color in my living room and as long as the sofa you choose can be washed I wouldn't worry. I think the important thing about a sofa is not the color but the fabric. Who would have thought velvet would hold up against kids spills and other assorted stains? The chenille, even when gently cleaned, shades too much. Despite being light it held up well against cat hair and some spills. It doesn't hold up well against blue jeans and that's an impt fact. The color on the front edge of the sofa picks up the most dirt, color transfer etc. I love, love the style of your sofa and probably would get that style myself. I wanted it the first time and saw one by Lee Industries. I believe Pottery Barn also makes that style as well as Restoration Hardware. I also get tired and bored with colors and still would pick a neutral color cause you can always add pillows for punch or even repaint down the road. I would pick a color deeper than off white with a fabric that is washable.
