6 Standout Design Trends at the Las Vegas Summer Market
Heavy metal accents, winter white upholstery, pleated looks and faux shagreen show up in featured products
This week’s Las Vegas Summer Market is giving design professionals and retailers a chance to check out the latest trends in home furnishings and accessories. Top looks among the products on display include prominent metallic accents, thick winter white upholstery, luxe textures such as faux shagreen, and desert-inspired color palettes.
Safety and health protocols were established for the Las Vegas Market to allow for in-person visits to the permanent showrooms. Some vendors also are participating in the market virtually using online 3D showrooms, digital catalogs and video presentations. Below, see some of the standout looks at the Aug. 30-Sept. 3, 2020, trade event.

Bold metal accents are popping up in combination with other trends seen at the market, such as the intersection of metals and the ongoing nature-inspired trend. The combination is appearing on furniture, lighting and accessories.
For example, this table lamp combines a solid cylindrical base with a delicate lampshade composed of lily pad shapes. Both are made from smooth-spun steel with a brass finish.

2. Channel-Tufted Upholstery
In keeping with the recent popularity of Art Deco-inspired style, the market is showing glamorous channel-tufted upholstery on beds, sofas and chairs.
Yonatan Gordon, director of new product development at the Modway furniture company, calls the channel-tufted velvet on this bed “reminiscent of bubbly Parisian charm.” The angled metal legs mix in a modern element, giving it a fresh look. Many of the channel-tufted pieces being presented at the market nod to Art Deco in a modern way.

This channel-tufted swivel chair has 1920s-meets-1970s style. The curvy shape and the tufting are reminiscent of Art Deco, while the round champagne base lends a mod vibe.
Other trends spotted at the market that are reflected in this piece are the strong cylindrical shape of the base, the prominent metal accent and the desert-inspired dusty rose color.

3. Pleated Upholstery
Like channel tufting, the pleated upholstered look features strong, straight lines. The difference is that the pleated look is flatter and has folds at the edges. (Look at the chair on the right to see the folds.)
This vignette illustrates how fashion and home design can intersect. The curves and patterns of the upholstered furniture mimic the pleated fashion in the photograph on the wall, and the light fixture mimics its movement.

Pleated leather upholstery gives a modern spin to this tuxedo sofa, another piece that illustrates a trend at the market: sofas with chunky bases. Some are raised atop low metallic bases; others, like this one, have short feet that are barely apparent. This marks a change from sofas that sit high off the floor on longer legs.

4. Caned Furniture
Caning has been around for centuries, yet it still looks great on modern and contemporary pieces — think Marcel Breuer’s B32 chairs balanced on their gravity-defying chrome bases. Fresh takes on caning at the market add light-colored wood, interesting texture and a peek-a-boo sensibility to beds, chairs and cabinetry.

5. Plush Winter White Upholstery
Last fall at High Point Market, white wool bouclé upholstery popped up in quite a few spaces. Slubbed and plush winter white textiles follow suit this summer at the Las Vegas Market, often accented by metal finishes.
Scandinavian modern style influenced the design of these inviting armchairs. Nubby winter white upholstery provides strong contrast to the chiseled iron frames. The metal has a distressed finish that adds a hint of industrial style.

6. Faux Shagreen
Interesting natural textures have been trending for several years, and at each market a few specific ones dominate. This summer, the luxe texture of faux shagreen is a standout, wrapping tables, desks, consoles and credenzas. Real shagreen is a rawhide usually taken from a stingray or shark, but the cruelty-free imitation is today’s material of choice.

Navy blue faux shagreen and a gold-finished metal base make a pleasing combination on this smart coffee table. The drawer can store remotes and coasters for a clutter-free look. Dark blues like navy and slate are making a strong appearance at market.
