6 Hot Decor Trends at Las Vegas Winter Market 2018
Designers see curvy sofas, pastels, polished woods and more black and gold coming our way
Interior designers descended upon Nevada this week for the annual Las Vegas Winter Market. This year’s market, running Jan. 28 to Feb. 1, features more than 4,200 lines of furniture, bedding, lighting, flooring, accessories and gifts across 40 floors of event space. Here we highlight six of the biggest trends in styles, materials, finishes and colors that you should watch for this year.
1. Furniture: Curvy Sofas
What’s going on. Chic new sofas have massive curves, from the shape of the arms to the entire back. “They are so comfortable, it’s like the sofa is giving you a big hug,” Ggem says. These curvy sofas were all over the Winter Market, in styles that work everywhere from formal living rooms to stylishly casual rec rooms.

The trend takes on a more tailored transitional look with a curved wood frame.

How to use. A small curved sofa or settee is just the right piece to cozy up in at the foot of a bed. Whatever room you put it in, balance a mix of rectilinear and round shapes on your other pieces.

2. Style: Midcentury Modern Goes Classic
What’s going on. “Sophisticated tailored elements inspired by masterful midcentury designs were integrated into more traditional styles,” Ggem says. “Midcentury modern details are the new normal in classic pieces. It feels like every sofa is on stylish legs, has beautiful corners and is a manageable scale,” she says.

“The new take on midcentury furniture is a great look,” says Mickelsen, a San Antonio-based interior designer. “The updated lines are refreshing while still honoring the long-loved original designs. These pieces are flexible enough to use anywhere from an urban loft to the suburbs.”

How to use. Try a mix of midcentury modern and more traditional elements. “The notched corners, long horizontal look and soft finish on this bed reference the style, but it also has a more classic traditional look,” Ggem says. “These clean pieces will seamlessly incorporate into every type of home because it’s easy to incorporate well-proportioned, thoughtfully detailed pieces that look timeless.”

3. Metal: Black With Brass or Gold
What’s going on. Product designers are pairing black metal with warm metallic finishes like brass and gold.
The VanSickles, design pros from Apex, North Carolina, love the clean lines they’re seeing in black and brass pieces. “Black and brass would fly in North Carolina, and I also imagine this sophisticated look in urban high rises too,” Sandra says.

How to use. “I see black and brass working in living rooms and dining rooms on the back of chairs and in light fixtures,” Ken says.

“Tailored and sophisticated, neoclassic or midcentury, this combo is easy to work into most environments and so very elegant,” Ggem says. In addition to light fixtures, these metals can show up as accents on casework like this credenza and in small details like upholstery nails.

4. Color: Pastels
What’s going on. A toned-down palette with hues including blush, mint, lavender, seafoam and baby blue were a dominant force seen on artwork, throw pillows, rugs, upholstery, wallpaper, you name it.
“Pastels were everywhere. I felt like I was in a pack of Necco Wafers,” Ggem says. “Product designers and craftspeople have dialed all the colors way down. For example, purple is dusty lavender, green is a soft seafoam, and blue is a muted cornflower. So soft and pretty, this palette evokes a serene feel. It’s definitely what my young urban clients are after in Los Angeles.”

“Pastels are clearly in this year at Winter Market and are portrayed in a very refined and modern way,” says interior designer Scanlon, founder of Vela Creative in Minneapolis. “I definitely can see incorporating pastels in projects this year. They are the perfect way to add a sophisticated element with a playful vibe.”

“I love how these soft, subdued hues read almost as a neutral but offer another layer of interest to the space,” Mickelsen says. “They bring a level of sophistication when paired with other quiet hues and textural accents.” This vignette shows how a bedroom can incorporate color but still be calming.

How to use. “I can see clients using these colors in an occasional chair, pillows or accessories to update their existing gray or neutral color schemes,” says Feia, co-owner of the Waukesha, Wisconsin, design-build firm Feia Construction.

5. Color: Saffron
What’s going on. Lots of yellows showed up throughout the market, but the spicy saffron hue was a standout, spied on upholstered furniture, flooring, wallpaper, lamps, artwork and other accents.
“Winter Market is wild about saffron,” Ggem says. “As a stand-alone accent, yellow is coming. I’m seeing lots of variations like saffron, mustard and dusty yellow. It’s eking its way in and causing the best kind of ruckus.”

How to use. “Yellows have warmth and brightness, especially opposite cooler colors like blue and purple. Yellows pack a lot of punch,” says Reddell, the interior designer and blogger behind Commander in Chic. “Adding just a lamp or pillow in yellow can bring life to a space.”

6. Material: Beautiful Wood Veneer
What’s going on. Surfaces that show off the grain of wood with highly polished finishes were all over dining tables, accent tables, desks and casework at the show.
“There was hardly a reclaimed piece to be found here. While that past trend put the focus on wood, the look has been elevated with more polished veneers taking the spotlight,” Ggem says. “They show off the beauty of the grains and colors of the wood and add a depth of textures. And a lot of these surfaces add the element of reflection.”

How to use. Rather than going with a matching dining set, try a table with a polished veneer and mix it with matte, whitewashed or painted finishes on the other large pieces. The natural beauty of wood is already gorgeous, and highlighting it as a highly polished surface can show it off at its best.
